Monumental Cemetery Carlo Maciachini built the Monumental Cemetery between 1863 and 1866 at Porta Volta. Villa Reale (Royal Villa) One of the most important Milanese neo- classical buildings, the Royal Villa, was built in 1790 by Leopoldo Pollak. It has been the residence of Napolen and Josephine and also of Eugene Beauharnais and the General Radetzky. Pilasters and columns decorate all the building that is surrounded by an English- style garden. The insides are finely decorated with candelabras, sculptures, frescoes and other decorations typical of Lombard neo- classicism.

Four novelists who fit certain criteria were selected: (a) they have invented, designed, and produced creative work regularly and their work has influenced Turkish literature; (b) they were Turkish citizens who have lived 75% of their lives in Turkey and received their education in Turkey; and (c) they varied in age and gender.

Box 1346 Ann Arbor, Ml 48106- 1346 Abstract During the first half of the twentieth century, the ethnically segmented Ottoman empire was transformed into a nation state of Turkish citizens. This thesis explores and evaluates the representation of ethnic minorities in Turkish fiction against a background of demographic, political, and social change. Within this context, novels and short stories of selected writers have been studied with a view to determining differences of experience, perception and attitude. The writers include: Huseyin Rahmi Giirpmar, Halide Edip Adivar, Re§at Nuri Guntekin, Halikarnas Bahk9isi, Orhan Kemal, Haldun Taner, Sait Faik, and Ya§ar Kemal. The thesis comprises an introduction, three chapters and a conclusion. The Introduction gives a brief overview of historical events relating to demographic changes and ethnic minority status, and looks at the popular perception of minorities in the Ottoman performance arts.

Throughout the 2015/16 season, Muti and the Orchestra have honored the ensemble’s distinguished history with performances of works that received either their world or U.S. premieres from the CSO. The final season program includes two of these works—Bruckner’s Symphony No. 9, which was given its U.S. premiere by the CSO in 1904, and his choral masterwork, Te Deum, which was given its U.S. premiere by the CSO in 1892. Both premieres were led by the CSO’s first music director, Theodore Thomas. Muti opens his June residency with the CSO with a program (June 16–21) that includes Brahms’ Serenade No. 1 and Beethoven’s Violin Concerto with Julia Fischer as soloist. Originally composed as chamber music, Brahms later adapted his Serenade No. 1 for full orchestra, offering a preview of the rich compositional style that would emerge in his four symphonies. The six-movement work is filled with lyrical wind and string passages, as well as exuberant writing in the allegro and scherzo movements.

    Biography Il Canto di Orfeo The vocal and instrumental ensemble Il Canto d'Orfeo, founded in 2005 by its conductor Gianluca Capuano, attempts to develop and refine the musical experiences matured during the group's intense concert activity of recent years. One of the most important strengths of the ensemble is the performance and recording of music by Giacomo Carissimi (of whom Maestro Capuano is among the leading scholars), his students (above all Charpentier, Kerll e Bernhard) as well as other composers who were active in Rome during the same period such as Luigi Rossi. The ensemble's repertoire includes many of the most important works composed between 1600 and 1750 as well as music spanning from the late renaissance to the present day. Il Canto d'Orfeo is comprised of some of the finest singers and instrumentalists specializing in early music performance practices. Thanks to the important collaboration of some of the most prestigious musicologists dedicated to the study of Renaissance and Baroque music, the ensemble considers one of its most important missions to be that of the rediscovery of repertoire written by composers who are unknown to the public at large as well as the more seldom performed works of the more famous masters. Il Canto d'Orfeo, together with the mezzosoprano Catherine King, has recorded a CD dedicated to the music of Baldassarre Galuppi for the English label, Avie Records, containing arias from the composer's operas. The recording was named "CD of the Month" and "Editor's Choice" by the prestigious British magazine Gramophone. Between 2006 and 2009 the group organized “Pietre Sonore", an international early music festival which took place at the Basilica of San Sempliciano in Milan.
