Finalmente, a la Agencia de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica, por la beca concedida en el marco del Proyecto de Investigación Científica y Tecnológica (PICT) 2005 Nº 32455 “Lenguas indígenas de la Argentina: relaciones gramaticales y aspectos morfosintácticos de algunas lenguas patagónicas y chaqueñas”. ii iii RESUMEN Esta investigación se centra en la categoría gramatical de género, uno de los posibles sistemas de clasificación nominal que se basa fundamentalmente en los criterios de animacidad y sexo y se caracteriza por presentar concordancia. El análisis de la manifestación y funcionamiento del género gramatical se realiza desde la perspectiva del funcionalismo tipológico sobre un corpus de catorce lenguas indígenas de América del Sur, cuyas ubicaciones se extienden desde Venezuela hasta el sur de Argentina. En la descripción y cotejo de los sistemas del género se contemplaron tres aspectos fundamentales: la motivación semántica de la asignación y su vínculo con la animacidad; los patrones de concordancia, principalmente dentro de la frase nominal; y la marcación de género en el sustantivo. En varias de las lenguas del corpus se detallaron esas facetas con respecto a otros sistemas de categorización nominal coexistentes con el de género: clases nominales y clasificadores. Al contrastar los sistemas de clasificación nominal de las diferentes lenguas se pudo comprobar que estos cumplen funciones de determinación; por otro lado, se hizo evidente la correlación que existe con la jerarquía de animacidad, así como las posibilidades de extensión metafórica/metonímica de las diferentes categorías de clasificación, hechos que demuestran que el estudio de la categorización nominal constituye una valiosa fuente de información acerca de la cosmovisión y las creencias culturales comprendidas en las lenguas. ABSTRACT This research focuses on the grammatical category of gender, one of the possible systems of noun classification. Gender is mainly based on the criteria of animacy and sex and is characterized by presenting an agreement system. The analysis of the expression and function of grammatical gender is performed from the perspective of typological functionalism on a corpus of fourteen indigenous languages located in South America, and ranging from Venezuela to Southern Argentina. In the description and collation of gender systems three fundamental aspects were considered: semantic motivation for assignment and its link with animacy; patterns of agreement, primarily within the noun phrase, and gender marking on the noun. In several of the languages of the corpus these aspects were detailed with respect to other systems of nominal categorization coexisting with gender: noun classes and classifiers. By contrasting the noun classification systems of different languages we could verify that they realize the function of noun determination; on the other hand, it became obvious the correlation gender systems have with the animacy hierarchy as well as their possibilities for metaphoric/metonymic extensions of different categories of classification. The present paper proposes an etymology for the troublesome ethnonym <katukina>, used, for over a century, to designate a series of western Amazonian indigenous groups. I propose that the term originates in a Purus Arawakan denominal monovalent predicate (“adjective”) *ka-tukanɨ, meaning ‘speaker of an indigenous language’. This etymology is explicitly argued to be superior to existing alternatives on formal, semantic and distributional grounds. The typical and distinguishing properties of different kinds of ethnonyms (exonyms and autonyms) are also discussed, as these are of critical importance in establishing the implausible nature of other, competing etymologies for this term. Keywords: Ethnonyms; Etymology; Arawakan languages. 1. Introduction This short paper offers an etymological account of the origin of an ethnonym applied to a number of western Amazonian indigenous groups of diverse linguistic affiliation. The proposal made here should be evaluated without losing sight of the tentative nature of etymological hypotheses, which can be evaluated in terms of their strength against alternative proposals, and which can be reviewed in the light of new evidence. In a domain such as that of the historical linguistics of lowland South America, where research remains incipient and where documentation is sparse and usually lacking, there is even more reason to proceed cautiously on this terrain. I propose that <katukina> originates in an Arawakan, or, more precisely, Purus Arawakan, expression meaning “speaker of (an indigenous) language”, and that the term was used, in its originally transparent formation, as a way to mark the divide between non-indians and the indigenous local populations.

The village became a meeting place for re-existences that encompass issues of Indigenous sovereignty, sacred land right, spirituality practices, decolonizing education, and the creation of the first Intercultural Indigenous University in Pindorama. It challenged the economic and social impacts of the neoliberal sports mega-events, which raised tensions during the organization of sports mega-events. These tensions were amplified through media discourse, by perpetuating violent treatment of Indigenous peoples, and naturalizing the dominant elite. Employing a transdisciplinary methodology that combines Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical Political Economy, this study examines the media discourse that obstructs the Indigenous re-existence of Maraká’nà by favoring capitalist structures. Despite demonstrating unbalanced power relations, the findings show unbalanced power relations Maraká'nà and media discourses.

Langer, PhD. ABSTRACT Japan’s occupation of Southeast Asia in early 1942 cut off more than 90 percent of the global rubber supply to the World War II Allies. Without an adequate supply of this strategic material to meet military-industrial requirements, it was impossible to win the war. The Roosevelt Administration concluded that the success of the Allied war effort could depend on increasing the productivity of rubber tappers who extracted latex from rubber trees dispersed throughout Amazonian rainforests. In response to Roosevelt’s appeal, Brazil’s President, Getúlio Vargas, organized a “Battle for Rubber” to increase rubber production in the Amazon. The authoritarian Brazilian government recruited around 30,000 “rubber soldiers,” mainly from the arid Northeast, and sent them to work on Amazonian rubber estates. This study explores the dynamics of global, national, and regional actors as they converged and interacted with Amazonian society in the Battle for Rubber. Migrant rubber tappers, Amazonian rubber elites, indigenous groups, North American technical advisers, Brazilian government agencies, and the Roosevelt Administration were linked in a wartime enterprise to increase rubber production.
