And it was precisely for advocating their rights that he was murdered in April 1987, during the demarcation of the Enawenê Nawê people’s land. It took more than 20 years for those involved in his murder to be held accountable and convicted in February 2018. -

The Awetí speak a Tupian language closely related to the Tupí-Guaraní branch; many also know Kamayurá and increasingly Portuguese, as contact with the Bra-zilian society is growing more intense. -

On the Etymology of the Ethnonym Katukina

The present paper proposes an etymology for the troublesome ethnonym <katukina>, used, for over a century, to designate a series of western Amazonian indigenous groups. I propose that the term originates in a Purus Arawakan denominal monovalent predicate (“adjective”) *ka-tukanɨ, meaning ‘speaker of an indigenous language’. This etymology is explicitly argued to be superior to existing alternatives on formal, semantic and distributional grounds. The typical and distinguishing properties of different kinds of ethnonyms (exonyms and autonyms) are also discussed, as these are of critical importance in establishing the implausible nature of other, competing etymologies for this term. Keywords: Ethnonyms; Etymology; Arawakan languages. 1. Introduction This short paper offers an etymological account of the origin of an ethnonym applied to a number of western Amazonian indigenous groups of diverse linguistic affiliation. The proposal made here should be evaluated without losing sight of the tentative nature of etymological hypotheses, which can be evaluated in terms of their strength against alternative proposals, and which can be reviewed in the light of new evidence. In a domain such as that of the historical linguistics of lowland South America, where research remains incipient and where documentation is sparse and usually lacking, there is even more reason to proceed cautiously on this terrain. I propose that <katukina> originates in an Arawakan, or, more precisely, Purus Arawakan, expression meaning “speaker of (an indigenous) language”, and that the term was used, in its originally transparent formation, as a way to mark the divide between non-indians and the indigenous local populations. -

No variation was observed for 15 of them, in accordance with previous studies. Of the remaining 13, four (Rh, Duffy, acid phosphatase, and GC) showed significant departures from the averages obtained in 32 other South American Indian populations. If studies performed in the 1960s are considered, there is indication that no significant changes in this village’s gene pool has occurred in the last 30 years. Comparison with two other Xavante populations included nine systems with variation, and for three of them (MNSs, Rh, and Duffy) significant differences were found. -

The village became a meeting place for re-existences that encompass issues of Indigenous sovereignty, sacred land right, spirituality practices, decolonizing education, and the creation of the first Intercultural Indigenous University in Pindorama. It challenged the economic and social impacts of the neoliberal sports mega-events, which raised tensions during the organization of sports mega-events. These tensions were amplified through media discourse, by perpetuating violent treatment of Indigenous peoples, and naturalizing the dominant elite. Employing a transdisciplinary methodology that combines Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical Political Economy, this study examines the media discourse that obstructs the Indigenous re-existence of Maraká’nà by favoring capitalist structures. Despite demonstrating unbalanced power relations, the findings show unbalanced power relations Maraká'nà and media discourses. -

The aim of the present study was to characterize the genetic structure of Xavante Indians and compare it with other populations. The Xavante, an indigenous population living in Brazilian Central Plateau, is one of the largest native groups in Brazil. A subset of 53 unrelated subjects was selected from the initial sample of 300 Xavante Indians. Using 86,197 markers, Xavante were compared with all populations of HapMap Phase III and HGDP-CEPH projects and with a Southeast Brazilian population sample to establish its population structure. Principal Components Analysis showed that the Xavante Indians are concentrated in the Amerindian axis near other populations of known Amerindian ancestry such as Karitiana, Pima, Surui and Maya and a low degree of genetic admixture was observed. This is consistent with the historical records of bottlenecks experience and cultural isolation.
