And most of this is happening in São Paulo, a sprawling city of 20 million people that is intractable in some respects but pulsing with febrile energy – a New York City for the new century. Most of Brazil’s influential collectors are based here, among them Credit Suisse CEO José Olympio da Veiga Pereira and his wife Andrea, Regina Pinho de Almeida, Cleusa Garfinkel, Eduardo and Camilla Barella – and Feitosa, who has amassed a sizeable stash of contemporary Brazilian art with her husband Heitor Martins. ABSTRACT: The different functions assigned to museums along their history as institutions of knowledge, culture and leisure are discussed in this article. Among the theoretical considerations relevant to the Sociology of Art, the scope of the museum is discussed, having as an object of study the institutions in the field of art. Empirically, the focus is on gender research, that is, the transmission of works produced by women in the visual arts as three legitimating spaces are compared: the Oscar Niemeyer Museum (ONM), the materials [art br] produced by the Institute Art in School UNICENTRO/PR pole and the Art Textbook published by the state of Paraná for middle school. KEYWORDS : sociology of art; production by women; audience; museum.

  • Systems and Feedback: Cildo Meireles's Insertions Into Ideological Circuits, 1970—Ongoing
SYSTEMS AND FEEDBACK: CILDO MEIRELES’S INSERTIONS INTO IDEOLOGICAL CIRCUITS, 1970—ONGOING BY TERESA CRISTINA JARDIM DE SANTA CRUZ OLIVEIRA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Art History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Assistant Professor Irene V. Small, Chair Associate Professor David O’Brien Associate Professor Oscar E. Vázquez Assistant Professor Suzanne P. Hudson, University of Southern California Assistant Professor Terri Weissman Abstract In 1970, Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles began a series of artworks, commonly grouped under the title Insertions into Ideological Circuits, which has since become emblematic of a Latin American art often termed “ideological conceptualism.” This dissertation problematizes the limits of this terminology in shaping the readings of the Insertions into Ideological Circuits by offering detailed analyses of what the Insertions series is, how it operates, where it was first publicly received and what the impact of its exhibition was for different audiences. The main argument of this dissertation is that the Insertions series uses the notion of a system as its medium, and in so doing, seeks to question two interconnected systems: the system of art and the capitalist system. To support this argument, this dissertation draws from preexisting scholarship to offer analysis of the reproducibility and circulation of the projects in the art world as well as to demonstrate how language plays a significant role in the operation of the series as a system in and of itself. To further provide bases for my argument, I have used an investigative methodology that includes interviews with Meireles, the art critic Frederico Morais, as well as other Brazilian art historians.

Emphasizing Silveira’s ongoing formal experimentation and conceptual interventions in architecture, the works on view provide an overview of site-specific installations and public art projects that were never realized in physical space. Regina Silveira: Unrealized / Não feito is the Gallery’s fifth solo presentation of Silveira’s work, and celebrates a decade since her first Gallery exhibition in 2009. A pioneering figure in Brazilian art, for over five decades Silveira has utilized surprise and illusion as methodologies for the destabilization of perspective and reality. Silveira began her career in the 1950s under the tutelage of expressionist Brazilian painter Iberê Camargo, studying lithography and woodcut, as well as painting. In the 1970s, Silveira experimented with printmaking and video, spearheading a movement of radical artistic production during a time of military repression in Brazil. Since the 1980s, Silveira has executed numerous large-scale installations in libraries, public plazas, roadways, parks, museum facades, public transit centers, and other institutional sites. The works on view in Unrealized / Não feito offer a unique glimpse into Silveira’s process and methodology and catalyze possibilities for future experimentation.
