Systems and Feedback: Cildo Meireles's Insertions Into Ideological Circuits, 1970—Ongoing
SYSTEMS AND FEEDBACK: CILDO MEIRELES’S INSERTIONS INTO IDEOLOGICAL CIRCUITS, 1970—ONGOING BY TERESA CRISTINA JARDIM DE SANTA CRUZ OLIVEIRA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Art History in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, 2013 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Assistant Professor Irene V. Small, Chair Associate Professor David O’Brien Associate Professor Oscar E. Vázquez Assistant Professor Suzanne P. Hudson, University of Southern California Assistant Professor Terri Weissman Abstract In 1970, Brazilian artist Cildo Meireles began a series of artworks, commonly grouped under the title Insertions into Ideological Circuits, which has since become emblematic of a Latin American art often termed “ideological conceptualism.” This dissertation problematizes the limits of this terminology in shaping the readings of the Insertions into Ideological Circuits by offering detailed analyses of what the Insertions series is, how it operates, where it was first publicly received and what the impact of its exhibition was for different audiences. The main argument of this dissertation is that the Insertions series uses the notion of a system as its medium, and in so doing, seeks to question two interconnected systems: the system of art and the capitalist system. To support this argument, this dissertation draws from preexisting scholarship to offer analysis of the reproducibility and circulation of the projects in the art world as well as to demonstrate how language plays a significant role in the operation of the series as a system in and of itself. To further provide bases for my argument, I have used an investigative methodology that includes interviews with Meireles, the art critic Frederico Morais, as well as other Brazilian art historians. -

CILDO MEIRELES JULY 18 – OCTOBER 26, 2003 CILDO MEIRELES For nearly forty years, the work of Cildo Meireles has challenged common perceptions about the world by dissecting and reformulating conceptual principles of art, politics, economics, and physics. Although he works in many media, Meireles is renowned for creating dramatic, multi-sensory installations that engage the viewer on all levels: physically, emotionally, and psychically. For these installations, he typically selects a few common materials and objects and combines them to create environments fraught with symbolism and emotional significance. Strictu, a walk-through installation first exhibited in Bonn, Germany, in 1999, consists of rows of stainless steel poles around which a length of chain winds toward a wooden table and chairs. At the end of the chain, close to the table, there are handcuffs and iron prison balls. The room is shadowy, although an interrogation lamp shines brightly on the table, revealing a piece of paper with a typed statement. In its unyielding spareness, the open space of the installation becomes a setting for the exercise of complete control, a vivid manifestation of the authoritarianism that has often been the subject of Meireles’ work. The typed statement on the table begins with a quote the artist came across by chance. He was in New York City in the fall of 1999 for a retrospective exhibition at the New Museum of Contemporary Art. Late one night he was in his hotel room, paying scant attention to a television program that featured the Ku Klux Klan. Suddenly, a Klan leader appeared on the screen, and Meireles turned up the volume. -

In the Name of Geography: the Conceptual Maps of Anna Bella
SOUTHERN METHODIST UNIVERSITY In the Name of Geography The Conceptual Maps of Anna Bella Geiger from O Novo Atlas Lindsey Herkommer 12/1/2009 Page | 0 The marbled black and white cover of this humble artist book, titled O Novo Atlas [The New Atlas] (1977), evokes nostalgia for classroom‐lessons learned in youth (Fig.1). Though, instead of the traditional vertical journal format beckoning to be filled with notes, doodles, and homework assignments, O Novo Atlas sits horizontally and presents new lessons for the reader to learn. The black, plastic comb binding signals the inexpensive quality of the book while simultaneously reinforcing the economic ease of its reproduction. The white, horizontal rectangle situated slightly higher than center is an integrated label space ‐ a generic receptacle awaiting an identifier (Fig. 2). Within the clean edges and rounded corners of this label space, the title has been printed in, again, a humanly off‐center position. Ample space remains on all sides of the Helvetica 18 point font; it is a modest announcement in a space that is already modest to begin with. By using this high Modernist font frequently seen in advertisements, titles, logos, and labels, O Novo Atlas boasts visual elements so mundane to our eyes that the overstated banality either peaks our curiosity or passes unnoticed. Yet, as the title suggests, geographic paradigms have shifted and it is time for a re‐learning of our world. For Brazilian artist Anna Bella Geiger, responsible for the creation of this book and the lessons within, this is most certainly the case. Living and working during the 1970’s in Rio de Janeiro, she and her fellow artist produced work during a difficult time for freedom – intellectually and politically. -

Sao Paolo and Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART SAN DIEGO International Collectors’ Art Tour: Brazil October 21 – October 29, 2012 BACKGROUND ON BRAZIL Brazil is on the move. Optimism about the future is high: the economy is strong, the government is stable and organized for the first time in years, and major progress is finally being realized in many areas that have long-needed addressing. Brazil was also chosen to host the 2014 World Soccer Championship and the 2016 Summer Olympics which for the first time will be held in Latin America. Change is in the air, and nowhere is that change more evident than in São Paulo, where a strong local economy is financing exciting civic projects and subsidizing creative private enterprise. All this is of course reflected in the contemporary art scene that has resurged more vibrant than ever. Rio de Janeiro certainly is deserving of its title as “the Marvelous City;” when visiting Rio, however, one cannot help but feel that this title is almost anti-euphemistic for a city so magnificent in both its setting and its spirit. What initially strikes every first-time visitor is its breathtaking beauty: situated amongst a dramatic geology of rock pinnacles and azure sea, Rio’s sublime, stunning scenery is arguably one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Rio’s residents, the “Cariocas,” are friendly, animated, care-free, and exhibit an unconditional zest for life. Their trademark bon vivant attitude, fused with a rich cultural heritage, provides a dynamic catalyst to spawn creativity. An innate sense of pride, in addition to an irresistible enthusiasm and signature Brazilian energy, is channeled by the city’s artists.
