During the period of the Punic Wars a fundamental change in Roman history occurred. The Roman nobility, once dominant in the Italic Peninsula, becomes the greatest Mediterranean power. But in the same period the way power is expressed by that nobility – in its political positioning before other people – and the concept of what is to be a Roman change. This study tries to demonstrate that this behaviour and conceptual changes were a result of the production process of “world” domination identity and representation, process generated by the interrelationships between Romans and Carthaginians in that period. The textual source for the study is the work of Polybius, the Histories, the oldest contemporaneous narrative of the Punic Wars we have today. The analysis of the source was made by the perspective of the historic transmission of significances, and the apprehension of those significances as symbols which expresses through the actions, behaviours and attitudes transcribed by Polybius, as long as the opinions and interpretations of the Greek historian, individual and group – as they are part of the narrative – dispositions and motivations. According to this analysis the interrelations between Romans and Carthaginians during the Punic Wars were responsible for that production of identity and representation of “world” domination, and “otherness” regarding the Carthaginians – as the identity depends on the difference –, “otherness” symbolized on Hannibal, perceived as the reification of Carthage. In other words, during the Punic Wars the way reality was perceived by the Romans changed. Therefore, those interactions generated a new way of Roman acting: their attitudes before other people translate a highly imposing discourse which expresses the new Roman imaging of the “world” as dominated. Other result provided by this study is that the beginnings of the dissention inside the Roman nobility occurred after the Second Punic War, partly because of the same production of identity and representation of the “world” as a Roman dominion. ix SUMÁRIO INTRODUÇÃO – 1 CAPÍTULO I UM GREGO ENTRE ROMANOS – 18 UMA BREVE BIOGRAFIA – 19 AS HISTÓRIAS E SUA TRADIÇÃO MANUSCRITA – 22 ESTRUTURA E CONTEÚDO DA OBRA – 26 O TEMA DAS HISTÓRIAS – 26 A ORGANIZAÇÃO TEMPORAL DOS LIVROS – 29 POLÍBIO E A HISTÓRIA PRAGMÁTICA – 34 AS FONTES DE POLÍBIO – 42 A HISTÓRIA DE “TODO O MUNDO HABITADO” – 46 POLÍBIO COMO INTERLOCUTOR ROMANO – 50 CAPÍTULO II ROMA E CARTAGO: potências em conflito – 59 ROMA – 59 CARTAGO – 66 O TEMPO DAS GUERRAS PÚNICAS – 68 OS TRATADOS ENTRE ROMA E CARTAGO – 74 CAPÍTULO III OS SENHORES DO MUNDO – 83 OS ROMANOS COMO DOMINADORES DO MUNDO – 86 A SEGUNDA GUERRA PÚNICA E A CONSTITUIÇÃO ROMANA – 90 DOMÍNIOS EM DEFINIÇÃO – 94 A SEGUNDA GUERRA PÚNICA E A CRISE DO SISTEMA DE DOMÍNIO ROMANO – 107 Aníbal e a representação romana dos cartagineses – 115 A eliminação da crise – 124 O “MUNDO ” COMO DOMÍNIO ROMANO – 134 O CONTROLE SOBRE A OYKOUMÉNE E A CISÃO DA NOBILITAS – 149 x CONSIDERAÇÕES FINAIS – 166 REFERÊNCIAS BIBLIOGRÁFICAS – 174 DOCUMENTAÇÃO PRIMÁRIA IMPRESSA – 174 BIBLIOGRAFIA INSTRUMENTAL – 175 OBRAS DE APOIO – 178 ANEXO OBSERVAÇÕES SOBRE CERTAS PASSAGENS DAS HISTÓRIAS TRADUZIDAS PARA O PORTUGUÊS – 190 1 INTRODUÇÃO I Nesta dissertação nos propomos demonstrar como os romanos passaram a se perceber como senhores do mundo. It places Roman decision-making and action within its proper context by emphasizing the role that Greek polities and Illyrian tribes played in both the outbreak and conclusion of the war. It argues that the primary motivation behind the Roman decision to declare war against the Ardiaei in 229 was to secure the very profitable trade routes linking Brundisium to the eastern shore of the Adriatic. It was in fact the failure of the major Greek powers to limit Ardiaean piracy that led directly to Roman intervention. In the earliest phase of trans-Adriatic engagement Rome was essentially uninterested in expansion or establishing a formal hegemony in the Greek East and maintained only very loose ties to the polities of the eastern Adriatic coast.

  • Report of the First Season 'Dimal in Illyria' 2010
Report of the first season ‘Dimal in Illyria’ 2010 N. Fenn, M. Heinzelmann, I. Klenner, B. Muka 1) Introduction The ancient site of Dimal (or Dimallon) in central Albania is the subject of a joint research project lead by the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Cologne, the Department of Archaeology in Tirana and the University of Applied Sciences Cologne. With the support of the RheinEnergie-Stiftung a first season of the project took place from September 15th until October 19th. During this period a geodetic network was established, large-scale geophysical prospections and terrestrial laser scans were carried out. At certain points of interest an intensive survey and stratigraphical sondages have been executed. The data collected by these methods are in the process of being integrated in a GIS. 2) Location The ancient site of Dimal is situated in the central-Albanian highland, about midway between the modern towns of Berat and Fier. (Fig. 1) West of the Albanian Alps and south of the plain Myzeqe, there is a north-south running hi ghland called Mallakastra, in which we know of several Illyrian hill-top settlements. Dimal is one of them, located on a big plateau, which provides around 9 ha of flat land to settle (Fig. 2). On the eastern part, there is an isolated smaller plateau (2 ha), which is 50 m higher than the rest of the surrounding area with the highest point at 445 m above sea level (Fig. 3). Two modern villages lie at the foot of the mountain, Bistrovica Fig. 1 - Map of Albania REPORT OF THE FIRST SEASON ‘DIMAL IN ILLYRIA’ 2010 Fig.

Interventions by the Roman Republic in Illyria 230 – 167 BC Submitted by Jack James Willoughby, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Classics, September 2018. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… Page 1 of 181 Abstract This thesis aims to determine how and why Rome undertook a series of interventions in Illyria during the period of 230 – 167 BC. The thesis is based on a detailed examination and consideration of the ancient written sources and the subsequent historiography on the subject. The Roman interventions in Illyria during this period have traditionally been treated as a component of wider studies of Roman expansion, although Rome’s involvement in Illyria has recently been examined by Dzino in his 2010 work Illyricum in Roman Politics 229BC-AD68. This work examined the development and integration of Illyricum in Roman political discourse, in which the Roman interventions were a smaller component in the broader study. A study of the Roman interventions in Illyria during the period of 230 – 167 BC has never previously been treated on this scale, nor effectively with a synthesis of the various approaches and pieces of evidence that are now available.
