Journal of Natural and Technical Sciences JNTS / Special Edition 1 PUBLISHED BY THE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES OF ALBANIA JNTS JOURNAL OF NATURAL AND TECHNICAL SCIENCES SPECIAL EDITION 2016 (3) XXI 2 XXI / 3 / 2016 JNTS / Special Edition 3 LETTER FROM THE EDITOR The 20th anniversary of scientific publishing: a prolific scientist Dear colleagues, Welcome to the 20th anniversary of the Journal of Natural and Technical Sciences of the Albanian Academy of Sciences. The origins of the Journal lie in 1996 when some of the most eminent personalities involved in the area of natural and technical sciences, working for the institutions that were part of the Academy until 2007, met together and decided to publish a multidisciplinary journal. This innovative way of recording the Academy of Sciences‘ business in the area of natural, technical and medical sciences proved to be a model for scientific publishing, as we now know it. It provided a means of reviewing scientific discovery, recording it, and the most importantly provided a means for disseminating these findings. The celebration of this anniversary falls at a time when scientific publishing is in the midst of the revolution of electronic publishing. The journal is available on line. Our objectives are, even more than ever before, to make scientific findings, freely available to the widest audience possible, in particular to young researchers. In the third issue of the journal, we will commemorate all the publications from the archives of the Editorial Office in the fields represented in the journal: mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, informatics, mechanics etc. and their respective subdisciplines. Many difficulties have been encountered. The writing machine was used to write the first issues of the journal. The authors of the first issue are Llukan Puka, Fatmir Hoxha, Kostandin Dollani, Robert Kushe, Alqi Çullaj, Mjalinda Pere, Efigjeni Kongjika, Loreta Shameti, Spartak Bozo, Fatbardha Babani, Marenglen Spiro, Miriam Bogdani, Betim, Muço, Shyqyri Aliaj, Sulejman Xhelepi, Donard Strazimiri, Lefter Cane. In addition to the regular chronological volumes of the journal, three special issues in seismics, biology and algebra have been published. 580 papers have been written by 1330 authors, since 1996. 799 (60%) authors out of 13330 are men and 531 (40%) are women. 1160 authors (87.2%) are from Albania and 170 authors (12.8%) are from abroad: Europe, North and South America, Near East, Middle East, Far East etc., being the perfect example of mutual understanding and comprehension among nations. The 4 XXI / 3 / 2016 average number of authors per paper is 2.5. In 2014 the title of the Journal changed from Albanian Journal of Natural and Technical Sciences (AJNTS) into Journal of Natural and Technical Sciences (JNTS), in line with the recommendations of IFLA, Elsevier‘s representatives. The Editor-in-Chief expresses his gratitude to all the Editors-in-Chiefs, members of the Editiorial Board and editors and to the authors and reviewers for the efforts made while writing and reviewing the papers of outstanding scientific achievements. We are very much looking forward to working with all those who are interested in the area of scientific research, building on the outstanding achievements of the forthcoming years. Our principal aim is to make JNTS a prominent international journal, specializing in the rapid publication of innovative, high-quality research articles. It is our mission now to take the journal forward and encourage the submission of presently under- represented disciplines. As the scope of the journal is broad, we also seek to attrack submissions that relate to the issues of societal interest and development of the country such as quality of life, climate change, pollution, environment and conservation of biodiversity, water resources, health, food security etc., in support of global agendas that are seminal to natural and technical sciences comprising earth sciences, biology, molecular biotechnology, nanotechnology, chemistry, mathematics, physics engineering, medicine etc. We, as scientists work beyond frontiers of any kind to promote peace and frinedship. Consequently, support cross border collaboration in the aforementioned science areas and subsequent publications. To the old and new readers alike, thank you for your support. We welcome your papers and we aim to accommodate any wish you might have to help us further the interests of the journal and make it the premier journal concerned with all aspects of natural and technical sciences that illustrate the unifying concepts of science with evidence, either observational or theoretical from any relevant field. It places Roman decision-making and action within its proper context by emphasizing the role that Greek polities and Illyrian tribes played in both the outbreak and conclusion of the war. It argues that the primary motivation behind the Roman decision to declare war against the Ardiaei in 229 was to secure the very profitable trade routes linking Brundisium to the eastern shore of the Adriatic. It was in fact the failure of the major Greek powers to limit Ardiaean piracy that led directly to Roman intervention. In the earliest phase of trans-Adriatic engagement Rome was essentially uninterested in expansion or establishing a formal hegemony in the Greek East and maintained only very loose ties to the polities of the eastern Adriatic coast.

  • Report of the First Season 'Dimal in Illyria' 2010
Report of the first season ‘Dimal in Illyria’ 2010 N. Fenn, M. Heinzelmann, I. Klenner, B. Muka 1) Introduction The ancient site of Dimal (or Dimallon) in central Albania is the subject of a joint research project lead by the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Cologne, the Department of Archaeology in Tirana and the University of Applied Sciences Cologne. With the support of the RheinEnergie-Stiftung a first season of the project took place from September 15th until October 19th. During this period a geodetic network was established, large-scale geophysical prospections and terrestrial laser scans were carried out. At certain points of interest an intensive survey and stratigraphical sondages have been executed. The data collected by these methods are in the process of being integrated in a GIS. 2) Location The ancient site of Dimal is situated in the central-Albanian highland, about midway between the modern towns of Berat and Fier. (Fig. 1) West of the Albanian Alps and south of the plain Myzeqe, there is a north-south running hi ghland called Mallakastra, in which we know of several Illyrian hill-top settlements. Dimal is one of them, located on a big plateau, which provides around 9 ha of flat land to settle (Fig. 2). On the eastern part, there is an isolated smaller plateau (2 ha), which is 50 m higher than the rest of the surrounding area with the highest point at 445 m above sea level (Fig. 3). Two modern villages lie at the foot of the mountain, Bistrovica Fig. 1 - Map of Albania REPORT OF THE FIRST SEASON ‘DIMAL IN ILLYRIA’ 2010 Fig.

  • On-Farm Conservation of Some Vegetable Landraces in Korça Region
Albanian j. agric. sci. 2016; Special. edition19-25 Agricultural University of Tirana RESEARCH ARTICLE (Open Access) On-farm conservation of some vegetable landraces in Korça region SOKRAT JANI1*, LIRI MIHO2 , VALBONA HOBDARI1 1Plant Genetic Resources Centre, Agricultural University of Tirana (AUT), Albania. 2Department of Agro-Environment and Ecology, Faculty of Agriculture and Environment, AUT, Albania. Abstract The paper explores the status of the diversity of local cultivars in some vegetables and the knowledge associated with them in the communities of Korça region. Out of 10 vegetable species studied, significant number of landraces exists for onion (4), cabbage (2), melon (2), pepper (2), and others by 1 (tomato, pumpkin, lettuce, leek, garlic, and string bean). It was found that these vegetables are cultivated mainly for family consumption and with minimal inputs. But when they are cultivated for commercial purposes, it seems that there is a change in management and inputs used. Overall, it was concluded that the level of landrace diversity has inversely direction to urbanization. Contrary to this belief, the study found that the market can increase their diversity; landraces offered are successfully commercialized. Indigenous vegetable gardens, cultivated for the market, are technically assisted by specialists of the region. After analyzing the findings of the study, for on farm conservation and sustainable use of traditional cultivars, five ways are suggested: a) promote the added value of products; b)consolidation of specialized markets that efficiently utilize their organoleptic qualities; c) creation of awareness at different levels; d) restoration and reintroduction of traditional cultivars through crop improvement processes; e) subsidies on-farm conservation of vegetable landraces, because their conservation and management can be considered as a service that should be rewarded by society.
