Peace! Justice! Featured Poet Izi Kharik was born on November 17, 1898. In his short life, Kharik became one of the most significant Yiddish poets of his day. Born in Zembin, Belarus, Kharik began publishing poetry as a teenager. He .(October)אָקטיאַבר Star) and the Minsk daily)שטערן went on to become an editor at the literary magazine Kharik was at a literary pinnacle when he was arrested in the 1937 purge. He was executed in the forest outside Minsk along with over 100 other leading writers, poets, and intellectuals of the republic in October 1937. Composer Feature Elana Arian (born 1981) is one of the leading voices in contemporary Jewish music. A composer, multi- instrumentalist, and recording artist, Elana inspires communities across the country with her soulful songwriting and spirit. Elana has served on the faculty of both Shirei Chagiga in London and the Hebrew Union College - Jewish Institute of Religion in New York, working as a teaching artist in the Debbie Friedman School of Sacred Music. As a community, we celebrate the lives and mourn the deaths of those murdered by the Soviet regime.
