  • Chapter 2: Bruckner’S Apprentice Years at St
1 ANTON BRUCKNER DOCUMENTARY BIOGRAPHY Chapter 2: Bruckner’s Apprentice Years at St. Florian (1845-55) 2.1 Bruckner and St. Florian The Augustinian monastery at St. Florian, founded about 1071, has a rich musical tradition, a splendid Chrismann organ and a large library containing both manuscripts and printed volumes.1 When Bruckner returned to what was to prove to be his spiritual home for the rest of his life, he was undoubtedly more able to appreciate and avail himself of the resources at his disposal.2 The music which he copied for study purposes included extracts mainly from sacred works, for instance part of the ‘Gloria’ from Michael Haydn’s St. Caecilia Mass, the final part of the Gloria from Joseph Haydn’s Mass in B flat (Nikolaimesse), the final parts of the ‘Gloria’ movement in several Eybler Masses, the ‘In te, Domine, speravi’ section from Mozart’s Te Deum in C KV141 and a passage from Mendelssohn’s St Paul, as well as a section from Mozart’ Fugue for piano duet, KV 426.3 Two 1 The organ, now known as the “Bruckner organ”, had three manuals, 59 registers and 5230 pipes during Bruckner’s time at St. Florian. It was overhauled by Matthäus Mauracher in 1873-75 and modernized in the 1920s. It now has four manuals, 103 registers and 7343 pipes. Although much material in the abbey library was lost through rebuilding in the 18th century and maladministration in the mid-19th century, it is well-stocked, containing about 121,000 printed volumes and 800 manuscripts.

LITURGICAL CHORAL AND ORGAN MUSIC Lent and Holy Week 2017 GRACE CATHEDRAL f we consider and ask ourselves what sort of music we should wish to hear on entering a church we should surely, in describing our ideal, say first of all that it I must be something different from what is heard elsewhere; that is should be a sacred music, devoted to its purpose, a music whose peace would still passion, whose dignity should strengthen our faith, whose unquestioned beauty should find a home in our hearts, to cheer us in life and death; a music worthy of the fair temples in which we meet and of the holy words of our liturgy; a music whose expression of the mystery of things unseen never allowed any trifling motive to ruffle the sanctity of its reserve. • St John's College Chapel Services
St John’s College Chapel Services Easter Term & Summer Residence 2015 St John’s College Chapel Since the early thirteenth century the site of St John’s College has had a place of Christian worship. The original Chapel, whose ruins may still be viewed in First Court, belonged to a hospital for the poor and infirm and was retained when the College was founded in 1511. Our present Chapel, built in 1869 by Sir George Gilbert Scott, continues this faithful offering of prayer with regular services enriched by the College’s outstanding choral tradition. Members of the public are welcome at all Choral Services, printed in BOLD TYPE in this list. Surplices are provided in the Chapel, and are worn by members of the College on Sundays, at Evensong on Saturdays, and on other holy days as marked in this list with the letter S. Choral Evensong Our service of Evensong follows that set down in the Church of England’s Book of Common Prayer in 1662. The service can be followed on the cream cards in the stalls. On Tuesdays to Sundays it is sung by the College Choir of men and boys, who study either at the College or at the College School. On Mondays Evensong is sung by the College’s new mixed-voice choir, St John’s Voices. The words of the psalm appointed for the day and sung by the Choir may be found in the Book of Common Prayer (usually red). Please join in singing the hymns, usually found in the green New English Hymnal.
