    Hüttentrekking Hochalpine Rieserferner-Runde 2 Die Rieserfernergruppe Unterwegs in einem der größten Schutzgebiete Die Rieserfernergruppe im Osten Südtirols ist eine kleine Berggruppe ganz besonderer Prägung. Schroffe Felsgipfel, Gletscher, tosende Wasserfälle und weit an den Berghängen hinaufreichende Wälder bestimmen das Bild. Die flachen Talböden schieben sich weit ins Gebirgsinnere und bieten gute Zugänge. Bereits etwas südlich des Alpenhauptkamms gelegen, ist die Rieserfernergruppe mit den westlichen Südausläufern der Venedigergruppe verbunden – und damit mit den Hohen Tauern. Der Großteil der Rieserfernergruppe gehört heute zum Naturpark Rieserferner-Ahrn und untersteht den strengen Naturschutzbestim- mungen des Landes Südtirol. Mit dem im Norden und Süden angren- zenden Nationalpark Hohe Tauern und dem Hochgebirgs naturpark Zillertaler Alpen bildet der Naturpark Rieserferner-Ahrn eines der größten zusammenhängenden Schutzgebiete Mitteleuropas. In den nach Norden ausgerichteten Hochkaren ist die Rieserfer- nergruppe verhältnismäßig stark vergletschert, obwohl die einst noch viel mächtigere Vereisung – wie in anderen Gebirgsgruppen auch – bereits stark an Masse verloren hat. Nach Süden und Osten fallen die Gipfel mit teils mächtigen Wänden in die umliegenden Täler ab. Besonders landschaftsprägend sind hier die Wände von Magerstein, Wild- und Hochgall im Antholzer Tal.
