Abstract This thesis sought to investigate why the British retained their policy of neutrality throughout the American Civil War, 1861-65, and whether the lack of intervention suggested British apathy towards the conflict. It discovered that British intervention was possible in a number of instances, such as the Trent Affair of 1861, but deliberately obstructed Federal diplomacy, such as the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863. This thesis suggests that the British public lacked substantial and sustained support for intervention. Some studies have suggested that the Union Blockade of Southern ports may have tempted British intervention. This thesis demonstrates how the British sought and implemented replacement cotton to support the British textile industry. This study also demonstrates that, by the outbreak of the Civil War, British society lacked substantial support for foreign abolitionists’’ campaigns, thus making American slavery a poorly supported reason for intervention. -

The speakers for our programs are diverse in their views, interpretations, and presentations. ***** October Program ***** Fort Fisher 1865: The Photographs of T.H. O’Sullivan Timothy O’Sullivan 1840 – 1882 Dr. Chris Fonvielle CFCWRT member, Dr. Chris Fonvielle, will present a program based upon his recently published book about the photographic history of Fort Fisher made by T.H. O’Sullivan during February 1865. As reported in the New York Herald on February 8, 1865, Messrs. Gardner & Company, as requested by Lt. Gen. Grant, dispatched an experienced Civil War photographer to make a series of views of Fort Fisher for Grant’s report on the Wilmington expedition. The thirty-nine photographs taken by O’Sullivan have provided a detailed record of the fortifications that protected the many blockade runners that made entrance into New Inlet during 1861 – 1865. It has been said that a picture is worth a thousand words. Chris has used O’Sullivan’s photographs to paint a picture of the fort that had become known as the Gibraltar of the South. Please join us on October 13th for a program that will add to our knowledge of the local history of the Cape Fear region during the Civil War. -

Confederate Wooden Gunboat Construction: Logistical Nightmare By Adam C. Edmonds May, 2011 Director of Thesis: Lawrence E. Babits, Ph.D. History Department The Confederate States Navy built wooden gunboats throughout the American Civil War. Within Civil War literature, more research and detailed analysis of Confederate States Navy construction focuses on building of ironclad vessels. Wooden gunboat construction is largely ignored. This thesis examines wooden gunboat construction in two different areas of the Confederacy: northeastern North Carolina in Washington and Elizabeth City, and the Mars Bluff Navy Yard in South Carolina. Before presenting two Confederate wooden gunboat construction case studies, a look at Confederate industrial, manufacturing, and transportation infrastructure, from the national perspective, brings into focus the logistical limitations station commanders faced in northeastern North Carolina and at Mars Bluff more clearly. Scattered, yet interdependent, marine manufacturing and ordnance facilities, connected by a suspect transportation network, created a logistical nightmare. Historical investigation into wooden gunboat construction in Washington, Elizabeth City, and Mars Bluff, examines an overlooked Confederate States Navy building program. The 1898 edition was prepared from the United States and Con federate navy registers, reports of officers, records of the office of the Secretary of the Navy, and miscellaneous papers. It was real ized at that time that the list of names and the information avail able were very incomplete, and every effort has been made since its publication to collect additional data. In publishing the 1898 edition, attention was called to its in completeness, and request made that any errors or omissions which might be noticed be brought to the attention of the Superintendent of the Office of Naval Records and Library with a view to making necessary corrections. As a result, approximately 400 additional names have since been added and much data concerning the service records of Confederate naval officers incorporated from records not previously available for research. -

The Crescent City Falls to the Union http://civilwar150.longwood.edu New Orleans, Louisiana was the largest city in the Confederacy at the start of the Civil War. Its position near the mouth of the Mississippi River contributed greatly to its strategic importance for both Confederate forces protecting it and Union forces who wished to seize it. As an international port, New Orleans was a midpoint for the shipping of domestic goods and the importation of foreign products. Confederate defenses of the city were focused downriver at Forts Jackson and St. Philip. Sandbars that stood at the various mouths of the Mississippi also provided a natural defense from any Federal ships trying to capture New Orleans. Naval commander David Dixon Porter had already attempted an attack on New Orleans in 1861 that had proved unsuccessful. Following that failed attempt he created a new plan for taking the city, which Secretary of Navy Gideon Welles and President Lincoln approved. Porter proposed utilizing a fleet of gunboats and mortar boats to bombard Forts Jackson and St. Philip, and a 6,000-man army under General Benjamin Butler to occupy the city. As commander for the operation, Porter chose his adoptive brother Captain David Farragut. The southern-born Farragut had served in the navy since the War of 1812 and had remained loyal to the Union following the secession of his native state of Tennessee. By the time Farragut’s flagship the U.S.S. Hartford arrived off the entrance to the Mississippi on February 20, 1862, the Confederates had placed 74 guns at Ft. -

Abstract “How A Vessel of This Magnitude Was Moved”: A Comparative Analysis of Confederate Ironclad Steam Engines, Boilers, and Propulsion Systems by Saxon T. Bisbee November 2012 Director: Dr. Bradley A. Rodgers Department of History The development of steam propulsion machinery in warships during the 19th century in conjunction with iron armor and shell guns resulted in a technological revolution in the world’s navies. Warships utilizing all of these technologies had been built in France and Great Britain dating back to the 1850s, but it was during the American Civil War that ironclads powered solely by steam proved themselves in large numbers. The armored warships built by the Confederate States of America especially represented a style adapted to scarce industrial resources and facilities. The development and / or procurement of propulsion machinery for these warships have received only peripheral study. Through historical and archaeological investigation, this thesis consolidates and expands on the scattered existing information on Confederate ironclad steam engines, boilers, and propulsion systems. Using a comparative analytical approach, the steam plants of 27 ironclads are assessed by source, type, and performance, among other factors.
