One element scrutinizes the efforts of Commandant Archibald Henderson to transform the Corps into a more nimble and professional organization. Henderson's initiatives are placed within the framework of the several fundamental changes that the U.S. Navy was undergoing as it worked to experiment with, acquire, and incorporate new naval technologies into its own operational concept. -

Whittle, commanding the naval station at New Orleans, for duty afloat. A powerful fleet of ships of war and bomb vessels, under the command of Commodore (afterwards Admiral) D. G. Farragut, was then assembling at the mouth of the Mississippi, for an attack upon New Orleans, in which a large land force under General Ben Butler (afterwards called the Beast) was to cooperate. The citizens were under the impression that the place was impregnable. General J. Duncan1, commanding Forts Jackson and St. Philip, below the city, was considered one of the best artillerists in the service ; and the land defense was entrusted to General M. Lovell, with a well appointed force under his command. The people of that gay city were occupied as usual in business and pleasure, and continued unconscious of their peril up to the very time when the Federal fleet passed the forts. But the condition of affairs, so far as naval defense was concerned, was lamentable. The regular C. S. naval fleet consisted of the CSS Louisiana (Captain C.F. McIntosh2) and carrying the flag of Commodore Mitchell ; the steamer McRae (Captain T.B. Huger), carrying six light 32-pounders and nine-inch pivot gun ; the steamer Jackson (Captain F.B. Renshaw), with two pivoted smooth bore 32-pounders ; the small iron plated Ram Manassas (Captain A.F. Warley), carrying one 32-pounder carronade in the bow ; and two launches, each carrying a howitzer and a crew of twenty men. -

ARCTIC WL. 43, NO. 4 (DECEMBER 1990) P. 393-403 Beaufort Formation (Late Tertiary) as Seen from Prince Patrick Island, Arctic Canada’ JOHN G. FYLES’ (Received 20 March 1990; accepted in revked form 14 June 1990) ABSTRACT. The Beaufort Formation, in its typearea on Prince Patrick Island, is a single lithostratigraphicunit, a few tens of metres thick, consisting of unlithified sandy deposits of braided rivers. Organicbeds in the sand have yielded more than 200 species of plants and insects and probably originated during the Pliocene, when the area supported coniferous forest. ThisBeaufort unit forms the thin eastern edge of a northwest-thickeningwedge of sand and gravel beneath the western part of the island. These largely unexposed beds,up to several hundred metres thick, include the Beaufort unit and perhaps other older or younger deposits.On the islands northeast and southwest of PrincePatrick Island (MeighenIsland to Banks Island),the name BeaufortFormation has been appliedto similar deposits of late Rrtiary age. Most recorded Beaufort beds on these islands are stratigraphically and paleontologically equivalentto the “type” Beaufort, but a few sites that have been called Beaufort (suchas Duck Hawk Bluffsand the lower unit at Ballast Brook,on Banks Island) differ stratigraphicallyand paleontologically from the “type” Beaufort. This paper recommends that these deposits (probably middle Miocene) and others like them be assigned new stratigraphic names and not be included in the Beaufort Formation as now defined. Informal names Mary Sachs gravel (Duck HawkBluffs) and Ballast Brookbeds are proposed as an initial step. Formal use of the name Beaufort Formation shouldrestricted be to the western Arctic Islands. -

The Battle of Fallen Timbers, the War of 1812, Fort Meigs and the early shipbuilding cities of Perrysburg and Maumee promise to please those who have an interest in local history. A visit to the world-class Toledo Art Museum, the fine dining along the river, with brew pubs and the world famous Tony Packo’s restaurant, will make for a great visit. -

Prouty* In the early days of the Civil War, Florida felt little effect of the conflict waging to the north, but this soon changed. On April 16, 1861, just six days after the surrender of Fort Sumter, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a naval blockade of the Confederacy. The intent was not- to invade, but rather to hold key positions along the coast, break up supply routes and generally disrupt the Confederate economy. The Union blockade was at first ridiculed by the South, but by the end of 1861 the acquisition of 200 ships by the U.S. -

Hamilton Head of Department, Cynthia Werner August 2016 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2016 Stephanie Koenig ABSTRACT The American Civil War was a tumultuous period for the United States, forcing brother against brother in a battle over the secession of the Confederate States. To study the Civil War sailor, a wealth of archival information exists in the form of personal narratives. Like their ships, naval crews were very much a reflection of where they were built and supplied. The purpose of this thesis is to provide scholars with a collection of narratives relevant to the study of shipboard life and to annotate this list with pertinent details drawn from those sources. There is a wealth of information concerning shipboard life during the American Civil War in the form of personal narratives and primary sources, and the following collection extracts evidence for shipboard life and seeks to contextualize the daily lives of sailors within their societal framework. The primary accounts predictably reflect a standardized lifestyle, but was there any variation between Confederate and United States shipboard conditions? The American Civil War has always been a period of exceptional historical interest, especially to families whose ancestry can be traced back to that cataclysmic event.
