Insignificance Given Meaning: The Literature of Kita Morio DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Masako Inamoto Graduate Program in East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2010 Dissertation Committee: Professor Richard Edgar Torrance Professor Naomi Fukumori Professor Shelley Fenno Quinn Copyright by Masako Inamoto 2010 Abstract Kita Morio (1927-), also known as his literary persona Dokutoru Manbô, is one of the most popular and prolific postwar writers in Japan. He is also one of the few Japanese writers who have simultaneously and successfully produced humorous, comical fiction and essays as well as serious literary works. He has worked in a variety of genres. For example, The House of Nire (Nireke no hitobito), his most prominent work, is a long family saga informed by history and Dr. Manbô at Sea (Dokutoru Manbô kôkaiki) is a humorous travelogue. He has also produced in other genres such as children‟s stories and science fiction. This study provides an introduction to Kita Morio‟s fiction and essays, in particular, his versatile writing styles. Also, through the examination of Kita‟s representative works in each genre, the study examines some overarching traits in his writing. For this reason, I have approached his large body of works by according a chapter to each genre. Chapter one provides a biographical overview of Kita Morio‟s life up to the present. The chapter also gives a brief biographical sketch of Kita‟s father, Saitô Mokichi (1882-1953), who is one of the most prominent tanka poets in modern times. -

I analyze how script and narration come together to function as a site of expression, and how they connect to questions of visuality, textuality, and materiality. Informed by work from the field of textual humanities, my project brings together new philological approaches to visual aspects of text in literature written in the Japanese script. Because research in English on the visual textuality of Japanese-language literature is scant, my work serves as a fundamental first-step in creating a new area of critical interest by establishing key terms and a general theoretical framework from which to approach the topic. Chapter One establishes the scope of my project and the vocabulary necessary for an analysis of script relative to narrative content; Chapter Two looks at one author’s relationship with written language; and Chapters Three and Four apply the concepts explored in Chapter One to a variety of modern and contemporary literary texts where script plays a central role. -

When I felt the first jolt, I knew it was going to be a big one, so I went over to the window to stop the speakers from falling off the ledge they were perched on. But soon the shaking grew, and grew, until finally it occurred to me that my life was in danger, that this was no time to worry about whether something would break. I had never experienced a quake this size before. I wondered if the building would collapse. I opened the door to go outside, and everything in the scene before my eyes was swaying. In that moment, in that storm of twisting and creaking, in that cage of hard concrete, I realized how soft, how fragile the human body was. All I could do was stand there, and just barely at that. The view from my floor, which I’d grown so accustomed to, looked different now, surreal even, as it churned and rumbled. My will and my thoughts were completely disconnected from the development of this phenomenon, and from the question of they had no bearing on the question of whether the shaking would get worseintensify or subside – a questionupon which; and yetmy life depended entirely on that question – would the shaking grow worse, or would it subside? The unusually long duration of the quake seemed too real to be real. -

We discussed Tokyo Ueno Station by Yu Miri, translated from the Japanese by Morgan Giles, and published in paperback and as an eBook by Tilted Axis Press. About the Book ‘Kazu's painful past and ghostly present are the subject of … the latest book by Korean-Japanese author Yu Miri ... It's a relatively slim novel that packs an enormous emotional punch, thanks to Yu's gorgeous, haunting writing and Morgan Giles' wonderful translation’ Michael Schaub, npr.org ‘How Kazu comes to be homeless, and then to haunt the park, is what keeps us reading, trying to understand the tragedy of this ghostly everyman. Deftly translated by Morgan Giles’ Lauren Elkin, Guardian We chose this book for its restrained but powerful portrayal of a homeless man who had worked on building sites for the 1964 Tokyo Olympics and now, as preparations for the 2020 games are being made, finds himself one of many living in the park next to the station. If you haven’t read Tokyo Ueno Station yet, we hope you will. Time differences between the UK and Australia prevented Tony Malone, whose blog Tony’s reading list is essential for anyone interested in what’s new in fiction in translation, and who incidentally is the instigator of the Shadow Booker International Prize, from joining us on the day but he kindly answered our questions by email. -

Center for Japanese Studies 50th Anniversary Hybrid Japan Haruki Murakami: A Conversation October 10 – October 12, 2008 Japanese Literature on the Global Stage: The Murakami Symposium All 50th Anniversary Events Video Archive On Saturday, October 11th, 2008, the Center for Japanese Studies presented a special reading and lecture by world- renowned Japanese novelist, Haruki Murakami, at UC Berkeley's Zellerbach Hall in front of a sold-out crowd. Murakami offered a reading, in both Japanese and English, of a short story called "The Rise and Fall of Sharpie Cakes." He shared with the audience his story of how he went from being the manager of a Tokyo jazz club to becoming a writer. This was followed by an on-stage conversation with Roland Kelts (author of Japanamerica), where they discussed everything from Murakami's works, his day-to-day routine, writing process, and hobbies. An audience Q&A followed the interview. On the previous afternoon, Friday, October 10th, Murakami was honored with the Inaugural Berkeley Japan Prize, a lifetime achievement award from the Center for Japanese Studies to an individual who has made significant contributions in furthering the understanding of Japan on the global stage. The award ceremony was held at the Morrison Reading Room in the Doe Library. Earlier in the afternoon, Murakami made a guest appearance at two Japanese literature classes at UC Berkeley where students were able to ask him about his novels that they were reading in their classes. On Sunday, October 12th, the Center for Japanese Studies presented a symposium featuring a distinguished panel of speakers to discuss Haruki Murakami's writings and the impact it has had in bringing Japanese literature to the global stage. -

Author: Beaney, Tara Title: Confronting “Unforeseen” Disasters: Yokō Tawada’s Surrealist and Animistic Poetics Confronting ‟Unforeseen” Disasters: Yōko Tawada’s Surrealist and Animistic Poetics Tara Beaney University of Aberdeen [email protected] Abstract If our current environmental predicament, and recent catastrophes such as the nuclear meltdown at Fukushima in 2011, can be diagnosed as partly a crisis of the imagination, then radical action is needed. Ecopoetics can help by directing attention to the agentic properties of matter, and to the sometimes unexpected ways in which chains of events are brought about, through principles of both randomness and design. In Yō ko Tawada’s literary work, chance intra-actions between human and material agencies lead to a variety of surprising, surreal scenarios. Focusing on an array of Tawada’s texts, with particular attention to her post-Fukushima novel, The Last Children of Tokyo (US title The Emissary, 2018, Japanese original Kentōshi, 2014), this article argues that Tawada’s emphasis on the random and unexpected can provide a valuable ecopoetic perspective, serving both as political critique and as contribution to new materialist thought. Attention to material and linguistic agency is central to Tawada’s surrealist and animistic poetics, which foregrounds what she describes as ‟language magic”—language as an agentic force of its own with a propensity for generating unexpected effects. By situating Tawada’s post- Fukushima writing in the context of her wider work, I argue that her approach can help us to move to a less anthropocentric and agent-centric perspective through paying attention to the creative potential of language and matter, and to how these generate effects through processes of both randomness and design. -

The Female Gaze in Contemporary Japanese Literature Abstract The female gaze can be used by writers and readers to look at narratives from a perspective that sees women as subjects instead of objects. Applying a female gaze to discourses that have traditionally been male-dominated opens new avenues of interpretation that are empowering from a feminist perspective. In this dissertation, I use the murder mystery novels of the bestselling female author Kirino Natsuo and the graphic novels of a prolific four-woman artistic collective called CLAMP to demonstrate how writers are capable of applying a female gaze to the themes of their work and how readers can and have read their work from the perspectives allowed by a female gaze. Kirino Natsuo presents a female perspective on such issues as prostitution, marriage, and equal employment laws in her novels, which are often based on sensationalist news stories. Meanwhile, CLAMP challenges the discourses surrounding the production and consumption of fictional women, especially the young female characters, or shojo, that have become iconic in Japanese popular culture. -

In particular, I focus on the most prominent award for new authors, the Akutagawa Prize, which is widely acknowledged as authoritative. My intention is to shed some useful light on the role of publishing company editors as the masterminds of the publishing industry. Chapter One provides an overview of issues surrounding junbungaku and taish! bungaku (“mass-oriented literature”). At present, junbungaku is defined in opposition to taish! bungaku, but ambiguities and boundary issues remain. This survey will enable us to identify the situations where the notion of junbungaku is defended as authoritative and how its relationship with the Akutagawa Prize increases its legitimacy. Chapter Two examines the origin and history of junbungaku, and discusses how the notion has changed over time. I also address questions such as what junbungaku is and how it can be defined, and uncover how junbungaku came under question as the Akutagawa Prize became more successful and began to overshadow junbungaku itself. The ultimate purpose of the Prize is to sell books and magazines; this affects not only literature but to some extent Japanese society as a whole. -
