THE THORNY ROSE: THE AVOIDANCE OF PASSION IN MODERN INDONESIAN LITERATURE1 Harry Aveling One of the important shortcomings of modern Indonesian literature is the failure of its authors, on the whole young, well-educated men of the upper and more modernized strata of society, to deal in a convincing manner with the topic of adult heterosexual passion. This problem includes, and partly arises from, an inadequacy in portraying realistic female char acters which verges, at times, on something which might be considered sadism. What is involved here is not merely an inability to come to terms with Western concepts of romantic love, as explicated, for example, by the late C. S. Lewis in his book The Allegory of Love. The failure to depict adult heterosexual passion on the part of modern Indonesian authors also stands in strange contrast to the frankness and gusto with which the writers of the various branches of traditional Indonesian and Malay litera ture dealt with this topic. Indeed it stands in almost as great a contrast with the practice of Peninsular Malay literature today. In Javanese literature, as Pigeaud notes in his history, The Literature of Java, "Poems and tales describing erotic situations are very much in evidence . descriptions of this kind are to be found in almost every important mythic, epic, historical and romantic Javanese text."^ In Sundanese literature, there is not only the open violence of Sang Kuriang's incestuous desires towards his mother (who conceived him through inter course with a dog), and a further wide range of openly sexual, indeed often heavily Oedipal stories, but also the crude direct ness of the trickster Si-Kabajan tales, which so embarrassed one commentator, Dr. -

Tahun 1932 tamat dari Algemene Middelbare School "bagian Al di Solo. Ia juga mempelajari mistik (tarikat) aliran Kadariyah Naksabandiah dari Kiyai Abdullah Mubarak yang terkenal juga dengan nama Ajengan Gedebag. Kecuali itu belajar filsafat pada pater Dr. Jacobs S.J., dosen pada Universitas Indonesia, dalam Filsafat Thomisme. Tahun 1943 ia menjadi anggota redaksi Bintang Timur merangkap redaktur mingguan Peninjauan (bersama Sanusi Pane, Armin Pane, PF Dahler, Dr. Amir dan Dr. Ratulangi). Tahun 1937 pembantu harian Indie Bode dan Mingguan Tijdbeeld dan Zaterdag, juga sebentar bekerja di Aneta. Tahun 1938 jadi pimpinan redaksi tengah-bulanan Penuntun Kemajuan. Tahun 1941 jadi redaksi Balai Pustaka, sejak saat itu tumbuh minatnya kepada kesusastraan. Tahun 1943 menjadi redaksi dan penyalin di kantor pekabaran radio, Jakarta. SAIR NONA FIENTJE DE FENIKS An Example of Popular Indonesian Fiction in the First Quarter of the Century CYRIL WILLIAM WATSON If one reads any of · the standard accounts of the development o{ modern Indonesian literature, whether those written by foreign scholars or by Indonesians themselves/ one is liable to get an exceptionally distorted picture of what reading material was available and what the readership of this material was, particularly for the period before the Second World War. The reason for this is that standard accoupts have concentrated almost exclusively on works published by the official colonial publisher Balai Pustaka or produced by B. P. staff and, at least as far as prose is concerned, have ignored other' publications. There are various reasons far this, but perhaps the most important is the influence exerted by Professor A. Teeuw, the pioneer2 in the field of modern Indonesian literary studies. Since his early work V ooltooid V oorspel ( 1950) which was the outcome of a course of lectures on modern Indonesian literature duri:qg which, as he himself admits, he was reading the literature for the first time and simply keeping himself a little way in front of his students, Professor Teeuw has delimited the field of research and his example has been followed without much questioning by subsequent writers such as H. B. J assin and Professor A. Johns. Professor Teeuw can hardly be blamed for what has occurred since he painstakingly dealt with all the ma- terial that was at hand to him. An analysis on the translation of Indonesian passive voice in “atheis”, a translated novel by R.J. Maguire Zazim Ristasari K.2202546 SEBELAS MARET UNIVERSITY CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Research Background People need language as an instrument of communication to express what they want, need, and feel. Samsuri (1991, p. 4) states that language is a tool that is used by people to express their thoughts, feelings, their willing and their behaviors; a tool that is used to influence and to be influenced. As a means of communication, language has an important role in all aspects of human life, such as science, technology, politics, trade, and religion. It is proved that translation is very important since people cannot understand the message of the scientific literature whose languages are not their mother tongue or their first languages. Connecting with this, Hartoko in Widyamartaya states “Kebutuhan menerjemahkan buku bukanlah tanda keterbelakangan, justru sebaliknya tanda keterbukaan, tanda kegiatan hendak ikut serta dalam tukar-menukar informasi (2003: p. 9). That is why there must be an effort to develop translation activities. It can be the translation of foreign languages into Indonesian or from Indonesian into other languages especially English. There are many requirements that must be fulfilled by a translator in order to make the translation good and understandable. The translator has to have: (1) complete knowledge of the source language (SL), (2) complete knowledge of the target language (TL), (3) an intimate acquaintance with the subject matter, and (4) complete knowledge of translation theory (Nida: 1964, p. 145). The needs of translated books, especially English, become wider in order to support the development of science and technology in developing country such as Indonesia. -

PUDJANGGA BARU: ASPECTS OF INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE IN THE 1930s Heather Sutherland Pudjangga Baru, the "New Writer," was a cultural periodical put out in the colonial capital of Batavia by a group of young Indonesian intellectuals from 1933 until the invasion of the Netherlands Indies by Japan in 1942.1 In Bahasa Indonesia, the term pudjangga means "literary man, man of letters; author, poet; linguist, philologist."2 34 The choice of this term for the title of the monthly was no doubt also influenced by an awareness of its historical connotations, for the word can be traced back through such Old Javanese forms as bhujanga to an original Sanskrit root associated with sacred and priestly learning. It implied nobility and integrity as well as literary ability; and it is therefore no accident that the writings appearing in it claimed high idealism and a sense of mission. The purpose proclaimed by Pudjangga Baru became more fervent as the years passed. In the beginning, it described itself simply as a literary, artistic, and cultural monthly. At the start of its third year it declared itself a "bearer of a new spirit in literature, art, culture, and general social affairs."^ At the beginning of its fifth year it claimed to be the "leader of the new dynamic spirit to create a new culture, the culture of Indonesian unity."1* In 1928, when the second All-Indonesia Youth Congress swore the famous oath to work for "one fatherland, one people, and one language" Pudjangga Baru pledged itself to work for the development of the national language and also to strive for a national culture, adding "one culture" to its 1. -

Chapter IV Analysis Data and Findings In analyzing the data, the writer used descriptive method, which means the data was analyzed in order to find how the structure of the plot, setting and character in Mihardja’s Atheis , and how the structure of the novel represented the theme of the novel. Wellek and Warren (1990: 280) found that critics who analyzed novel generally distinguish three forming elements of novel, those are plot, characterization and settings, whereas the latest element has a symbolic character and the modern theory called that as the atmosphere and tone. In this case, the writer only analyzed the structure Plot, Characters and Setting of the novel Atheist by Achdiyat K. Mihardja, and how structures of the novel represent the theme of the novel. Those are some intrinsic elements which writer believes are enough to represent the theme from Mihardja’s Atheis . 4.1 Data Analysis 4.1.1 Plot Structure In discussion part of plot the writer used Freytag’s Pyramid theory as the reference. This theory divided the plot structure into seven kinds, those are; Exposition, Inciting Incident, Rising Action, Climax, Falling Action, Resolution, Denouement. 1 Universitas Pasundan a) Exposition In this part, the author of the novel usually described about the setting scene. They introduce the characters and setting, providing description and background. In this novel, Atheis , the exposition began on the chapter two which introduced one of the main characters, Hasan, through first person point of view as the narrator. Atheis has two importance things that have analyzed in the exposition, the first is about Hasan’s life such as Hasan family background that build Hasan’s character as a religious person. -

86 RESISTENSI TOKOH UTAMA TERHADAP AGAMA DALAM NOVEL ATHEIS Linda Ayu Darmurtika Dosen Program Studi Pendidikan Bahasa dan Sastra Indonesia, Universitas Muhammadiyah Mataram Email : [email protected] ABSTRAK Novel Atheis karya Achdiat Karta Mihardja yang diterbitkan Balai Pustaka pada tahun 1949, bertemakan agama dan berlatar sosial budaya masyarakat Bandung/perkotaan, yang terpengaruh oleh modernisasi/kebudayaan Barat. Penelitian ini memfokuskan analisis terhadap tokoh utama yang mengalami pergulatan batin karena menyangsikan kebenaran agama, sehingga melakukan resistensi. Berdasarkan problematika latar belakang di atas, maka permasalahan yang diangkat dalam penelitian ini sebagai berikut: (1) Bagaimanakah bentuk resistensi tokoh utama terhadap agama dalam novel Atheis? (2) Faktor-faktor apakah yang menyebabkan tokoh utama melakukan resistensi terhadap agama dalam novel Atheis? (3) Bagaimanakah dampak dan makna resistensi tokoh utama terhadap agama dalam novel Atheis?. Bentuk resistensi tokoh utama terhadap agama dalam novel Atheis diurai berdasarkan hasil penelitian, yakni adanya bentuk resistensi yang dilakukan melalui penyangsian terhadap agama dan perlawanan terhadap ideologi agama. Faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi terjadinya resistensi, yakni berasal dari faktor keluarga, agama Islam, lingkungan modern, dan faktor ekonomi. Resistensi tokoh utama terhadap agama dalam novel Atheis dan konteksnya di masyarakat berdampak positif, yakni semakin kuatnya keimanan seseorang dan dampak negatifnya, agama akan kehilangan makna esensialnya, sedangkan makna resistensi tokoh utama terhadap agama, yakni terjalinnya kesadaran dalam kehidupan sosial dan kesadaran dalam beragama.
