Extant bat species occupy many trophic niches and feeding habits, including frugivores (fruit eaters), insectivores (insect eaters), nectarivores (nectar and pollen-eaters), carnivores (predators of small terrestrial vertebrates), piscivores (fish eaters), sanguinivores (blood eaters), and omnivores (eat animals and plant material). Modern bats also demonstrate a wide range of terrestrial abilities while feeding, including: (1) those that primarily feed at or near ground level, such as the common vampire bat (Desmodus rotundus) and the New Zealand short-tailed bat (Mystacina tuberculata); (2) those rarely observed to feed from or otherwise spend time on the ground; and (3) many intermediate forms that demonstrate terrestrial competency without an obvious ecological basis. The variation in chiropteran terrestrial ability has been hypothesized to be constrained by the morphology of the pelvis and hindlimbs into what are termed types 1, 2, and 3 bats.

Here we show that one of these elements—the calcar of bats (Chiroptera)—is a skeletal novelty that has anatomically diversified. Comparisons of evolutionary models of calcar length and corresponding disparity-through-time analyses indicate that the calcar diversified early in the evolutionary history of Chiroptera, as bats phylogenetically diversified after evolving the capac- ity for flight. This interspecific variation in calcar length and its relative proportion to tibia and forearm length is of functional relevance to flight-related behaviors. We also find that the calcar varies in its tissue composition among bats, which might affect its response to mechanical loading. We confirm the presence of a synovial joint at the articulation between the calcar and the cal- caneus in some species, which suggests the calcar has a kinematic functional role. Collectively, this functionally relevant variation suggests that adaptive advantages provided by the calcar led to its anatomical diversification. Our results demonstrate that novel skeletal additions can become integrated into vertebrate body plans and subsequently evolve into a variety of forms, potentially impacting clade diversification by expanding the available morphological space into which organisms can evolve.

Size is crucial for bats because it affects most aerodynamic variables and several key echolocation parameters. In turn, scaling relationships of both flight and echolocation have been suggested to constrain bat body size evolution. Previous studies have found a large phylogenetic effect and the inclusion of early Eocene fossil bats contributed to recover idiosyncratic body size change patterns in bats. Here, we test these previous hypotheses of bat body size evolution using a large, comprehensive supermatrix phylogeny (+800 taxa) to optimize body size and examine changes reconstructed along branches. Our analysis provides evidence of rapid stem phyletic nanism, an ancestral value stabilized at 12 g for crown-clade Chiroptera followed by backbone stasis, low-magnitude changes inside established families, and massive body size increase at accelerated rate in pteropodid subclades. Total variation amount explained by pteropodid subclades was 86.3%, with most changes reconstructed as phyletic increases but also apomorphic decreases. We evaluate these macroevolutionary patterns in light of the constraints hypothesis, and in terms of both neutral and adaptive evolutionary models. The reconstructed macroevo- lution of bat body size led us to propose that echolocation and flight work as successive, nested constraints limiting bat evolution along the body size scale. Dear Secretary Burgess: Industrial wind is devastating to the bat populations, adding to the many factors which play a role in reducing their numbers worldwide. While the wind industry likes to suggest that the advantage turbines provide to help reduce climate change (inadvertently benefitting all creatures) far outweighs their negative impact on the bats, that is yet to be seen. The data is simply not available to calculate the environmental/financial net losses accurately. With industrial wind’s intermittent and unreliable energy, the advantages are not nearly as the wind lobbyists suggest. The fragmentation/depletion of critical habitat due to wind turbines massive land use affects all animal species reliant on that space, ricocheting down the food chain. The loss of habitat as well as loss of carbon-sinks make the industrial turbine a very unlikely savior for any species. The net loss has simply not been calculated. Farmers are easily drawn into the debate by hosting these “farms”, while receiving large financial payouts. These same farmers are seemingly unaware of the immense benefit that bats provide by eating insect pests, saving farmers billions/year. The weakening of the local ecosystems will most certainly result in lower crop yields as well as contribute to financial losses as well.

The situation is even more complicated in the tropics, where certain regions remain under-sampled. Results: Two hundred and thirteen vespertilionid bats from Senegal (West Africa) were studied with the use of non-differentially stained karyotypes and multi-locus sequence data analysed with maximum likelihood and Bayesian methods. These bats were identified as 10 different taxa, five of which were distinctive from their nominate species (Pipistrellus hesperidus, Nycticeinops schlieffenii, Scotoecus hirundo, Neoromicia nana and N. somalica), based on both karyotypes and molecular data. These five cryptic taxa are unrelated, suggesting that these West African populations have long been isolated from other African regions. Additionally, we phylogenetically analysed 166 vespertilionid taxa from localities worldwide using GenBank data (some 80% of the genera of the family) and 14 representatives of closely related groups, together with our Senegalese specimens. The systematic position of several taxa differed from previous studies and the tribes Pipistrellini and Vespertilionini were redefined. The African Pipistrellus rueppellii was basal to the Pipistrellus/Nyctalus clade and the Oriental species Glischropus tylopus was basal to the East Asian pipistrelles within the tribe Pipistrellini. The African genus Neoromicia was confirmed to be diphyletic.

Phillips*,1 and Carmelo Fruciano1 1School of Earth, Environmental and Biological Sciences, Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia *Corresponding author: E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Recent molecular dating estimates for placental mammals echo fossil inferences for an explosive interordinal diversification, but typically place this event some 10-20 million years earlier than the Paleocene fossils, among apparently more “primitive” mammal faunas. However, current models of molecular evolution do not adequately account for parallel rate changes, and result in dramatic divergence underestimates for large, long-lived mammals such as whales and hominids. Calibrating among these taxa shifts the rate model errors deeper in the tree, inflating interordinal divergence estimates. We employ simulations based on empirical rate variation, which show that this “error-shift inflation” can explain previous molecular dating overestimates relative to fossil inferences. Molecular dating accuracy is substantially improved in the simulations by focusing on calibrations for taxa that retain plesiomorphic life-history characteristics. Applying this strategy to the empirical data favours the soft explosive model of placental evolution, in line with traditional palaeontological interpretations – a few Cretaceous placental lineages give rise to a rapid interordinal diversification following the 66 Ma Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary mass extinction.
