Dear Secretary Burgess: Industrial wind is devastating to the bat populations, adding to the many factors which play a role in reducing their numbers worldwide. While the wind industry likes to suggest that the advantage turbines provide to help reduce climate change (inadvertently benefitting all creatures) far outweighs their negative impact on the bats, that is yet to be seen. The data is simply not available to calculate the environmental/financial net losses accurately. With industrial wind’s intermittent and unreliable energy, the advantages are not nearly as the wind lobbyists suggest. The fragmentation/depletion of critical habitat due to wind turbines massive land use affects all animal species reliant on that space, ricocheting down the food chain. The loss of habitat as well as loss of carbon-sinks make the industrial turbine a very unlikely savior for any species. The net loss has simply not been calculated. Farmers are easily drawn into the debate by hosting these “farms”, while receiving large financial payouts. These same farmers are seemingly unaware of the immense benefit that bats provide by eating insect pests, saving farmers billions/year. The weakening of the local ecosystems will most certainly result in lower crop yields as well as contribute to financial losses as well. Subsequently the “farmers” use of pesticides is partly responsible for the decline in bat populations. Unfortunately the negative impact caused by modern day farming, which is responsible impart for the industrial wind boom, is reducing bat numbers at an alarming rate. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you… There are so many unknowns that we are gambling with when we allow large scale projects to be implemented world-wide without proper research. The fact is, we humans do not even know what to research until we observe the consequences of our actions. In the case of industrial wind in relation to bats, there is much we do not fully understand, for instance how the bats are affected. At first glance it looked as if collusion was the culprit causing so much bat demise. While that is a factor, we now understand that barotrauma is to blame. The bats undergo great trauma as a result of the pressure change they experience as they get too close to the turbines. Bats are attracted to turbines due to the large number of insects which are drawn to the increased temperature around the turbines. Barotrauma is invisible to the naked eye, but deadly just the same: “The decompression hypothesis proposes that bats are killed by barotrauma caused by rapid air- pressure reduction near moving turbine blades [1,4,5]. Barotrauma involves tissue damage to air- containing structures caused by rapid or excessive pressure change; pulmonary barotrauma is lung damage due to expansion of air in the lungs that is not accommodated by exhalation. We report here the first evidence that barotrauma is the cause of death in a high proportion of bats found at wind energy facilities. We found that 90% of bat fatalities involved internal haemorrhaging consistent with barotrauma, and that direct contact with turbine blades only accounted for about half of the fatalities. This note presents the first records of N. noctula social calls in Portugal. In fact, two types of N. noctula socials calls (C1 and D1) were recorded and identified at a site in the Sabor river valley in northern Portugal, which are usually associated with mating roosts. Therefore, these new data may contribute to improve and update the knowledge of the location of potential new mating, swarming and hibernation sites, as well as of the mating season length and behavioural patterns of this migratory species throughout its European range. The genus comprises 3 ecomorphotypes of polyphyletic origin, each associated with a different foraging strategy: aerial, trawling, and gleaning, related to the subgenera Selysius, Leuconoe, and Myotis, respectively. We explored the extent to which differences in diet characterized these ecomorphotypes. Based on a broad review of the literature, we classified the diet of species of Myotis based on hardness and vagility of consumed prey. A significant negative relationship was found between the percent volume consumption of hard and soft arthropods and between the aerodynamic characteristics of fast- and slow-flying prey. A cluster analysis yielded 3 groups of Myotis species based on their diet: 1) those for which hard prey represent more than 80% of the volume of excreta; 2) those for which hard prey represent 45% to 80% of the volume of excreta; and 3) those for which hard prey represent less than 45% of the volume of excreta.

We argue that bats have enormous potential as bioindi- cators: they show taxonomic stability, trends in their populations can be monitored, short- and long- term effects on populations can be measured and they are distributed widely around the globe. Because insectivorous bats occupy high trophic levels, they are sensitive to accumulations of pesti- cides and other toxins, and changes in their abundance may reflect changes in populations of arthro- pod prey species.

This species has few confirmed records throughout its distribution. Here we report the first record of L. egregius from the northern coast of Paraná state, southern Brazil. We captured a female individual of L. egregius using an ultrathin mist-net installed over a river knee, at Salto Morato Natural Reserve, municipality of Guaraqueçaba. This is the fourteenth locality with confirmed occurrence of L. egregius, being eight of them in Brazil. The knowledge on the bat fauna in Paraná has been increasing in recent decades, mainly due to the new studies in coast areas of this state.

May you have as much grass to run on as I did. ii Abstract Biodiversity has been the goal of conservation for thirty years but recent work by biodiversity eliminativists has raised serious challenges to its suitability as the primary goal of conservation. This project groups those challenges into three major arguments: the conceptual case for biodiversity’s elimination, the empirical case for biodiversity’s elimination, and the value compass case for biodiversity’s elimination. Aside from discussing biodiversity as a property, this thesis will also discuss biodiversity as a concept (as in biodiversity), and refer to the word biodiversity (as in ‘biodiversity’). In the conceptual case for biodiversity’s elimination, eliminativists argue that biodiversity misdirects the efforts of conservation and is not a scientifically coherent concept. In the empirical case, eliminativists argue that biodiversity is not operationalisable. In the value compass case, eliminativists argue that biodiversity does not reliably track biological value. I will argue that all three cases for biodiversity’s elimination are unsuccessful. Biodiversity is a complex concept with multiple dimensions of biological diversities but understanding it as a homeostatic property cluster avoids the conceptual case for its elimination. The empirical case is unsuccessful because the surrogacy strategy for measuring biodiversity can be defended against its limitations and the expanding multiplicity of biodiversity measures is overblown.
