The Dachstein Salzkammergut is the perfect holiday destination for visitors of all ages! The summer is perfect for walking on beautiful mountain pastures and climbing to the highest peaks. Go swimming or diving in the many mountain lakes, visit the oldest salt mines in the world, venture into a labyrinth of caves or experience a real sense of freedom by paragliding from the summit of the Krippenstein. Climb steep rock faces or visit the Urzeitwald (Primeval Forest) and the Museum of Rural Life in Gosau. The Salzkammergut Hand.Werk.Haus in Bad Goisern offers locally crafted goods for sale and there are numerous inns and mountain huts throughout the region. In the winter months you can speed your way over well-groomed ski slopes, go snowshoeing or take time to admire the magnificent scenery. Clamber up frozen waterfalls or go off-piste skiing on the Krippenstein. Relax and enjoy a romantic horse-drawn sledge ride in Gosau, or try ice-skating and enjoy the clean, fresh air. Trees were uprooted due to severe flooding and were washed down towards the River Traun. Felling is no longer allowed for reasons of natural protection, but the hermitage is still well worth a visit . The Chorinsky Hermitage in the Weißenbach Valley is accessible by foot or by mountain bike. Distance is approx. 6 km. There are bread baking demonstrations and other exhibitions at the museum. Carved wooden figures bring the stories to life. At the end of the trail there are 2 short tunnels with views towards Bad Goisern and Lake Hallstatt. Trail suitable for pushchairs. Accessible in winter when there is little snow at own risk. 4 PLACES TO VISIT FOSSILS AND MINERALS EXHIBITION T Giant ammonites and fossilised snails from the Triassic and Cretaceous Periods. HAND.WERK.HAUS T The Salzkammergut – lots of culture and handicrafts under one roof: Visit approx. 25 different stations throughout this exhibition of time-honoured Salzkammergut handicrafts. Discover local products, history and traditions. There is a lovely shop selling locally crafted goods, and there is also a spectacle maker’s workshop in the same building. Discover the history and culture of Bad Goisern. Learn about the manufacture of “Goisern Boots”, hunting, the “Goisern Violin” as well as discovering memoirs from local people. The “Dürrenholzstube” was transported from Weißenbach and carefully reconstructed in Müllerwäldchen by the local history group in 1977, complete with all the old tools and equipment used by the woodcutters. Each woodcutter would bake his own bread and dripping in front of the open fire. Old pictures and display items provide us with an insight into the hard and often dangerous work carried out by the woodcutters. Every Tuesday and Saturday from May to October there are trips to the gritstone quarries. On Saturdays from July to September we continue afterwards to the Plankenstein Hut. Trips up to the quarries, the Plankensteinalm, the Ebenalm or the Iglmoosalm are available at any time.
