FALCONS ONE GAME BEHIND DIVISION LEADER AFTER CRITERIA CHANGE Saint Augustine’s University is one game out of fi rst place in the CIAA Southern Division after the CIAA changed the conference schedule from seven games to six on Wednesday, Oct. 17. Hurricane Florence caused the cancellation of several games in September. Based on the new criteria, the 32-22 loss to Bowie State University at home on Sept. 22 is now a non-conference game. With the loss removed from their CIAA STANDINGS CIAA record, the Falcons are now 2-1 in the Southern Division. They are tied with Northern Division Conf. Ovr. Winston-Salem State University for second place. Fayetteville State leads the division Virginia Union 3-0 5-1 at 3-0. Bowie State 2-1 5-2 The CIAA New Championship Criteria For 2018: Virginia State 2-1 3-3 Chowan 1-2 2-4 Due to extenuating circumstances infl icted by Hurricane Florence and the re- Lincoln (Pa.) 1-2 1-6 scheduling challenges presented to several teams as a result of the storm, the Central Elizabeth City State 0-3 1-4 Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) has updated its championship criteria for the 2018 season. Instead of determining Divisional Champions based on a 7-game Southern Division Conf. Ovr. regular season composite schedule, a 6-game criteria will be used to determine Fayetteville State 3-0 4-1 this year’s Division Champions who will then advance to participate in the 2018 Winston-Salem State 2-1 3-3 CIAA Football Championship on Nov. 10. In each of my chapters, I examine one or two popular saint plays from a given period and area (medieval England, medieval France, early modern Spain, and early modern England) and show how each play invites the audience to undergo a spiritual shift parallel to that of the saint protagonist. These playmakers harnessed the affective power and technology of theatrical performance to invite the audience to engage with performed religious conversion in a controlled, celebratory environment and to encourage them to convert toward a more deeply felt Christianity. The plays reconfigured the audience’s sensory and intellectual understanding of Christian theology in order for the audience to recognize spiritual truth within an inherently communal, participatory, and performative space. The plays I examine depend on the audience’s familiarity with theatrical culture and practice in order to distinguish between sincere and insincere religious performance. By making the process of conversion a theatrical performance onstage, these plays could advocate for the theatrical medium as a genuine and effective catalyst for spiritual renewal.

    1 INTRODUCTION Charteris and His Work Every year the UK Crime Writers' Association holds its prestigious “Diamond Dagger” ceremony. The Diamond Dagger is awarded annually to crime writers whose careers have been marked by sustained excellence, and who have made a significant contribution to crime fiction published in the English language. Winners have included Ian Rankin, Eric Ambler, John le Carré and Ruth Rendell. On 7 May 1992 the Chairman of the Association presented the Diamond Dagger to the 84-year old Leslie Charteris, whose fiction featuring the gentleman warrior, vigilante adventurer and modern knight-errant Simon Templar, known as the Saint, first appeared in 1928 and is still being published today. Outperforming both heroes and villains and a destroyer of society's enemies for decades, the central protagonist of Charteris’ twelve novels, thirty-four novellas and twelve volumes of short stories excelled in popularity. As Clive Bloom has warned, figures relating to book sales, at least in Britain, “must always be approached with considerable caution,”1 but based on known editions and reprints, publishers’ remarks and information from Charteris’ letters, it has been estimated that Charteris’ sales have topped forty million.2 While small in relation to the huge output and marketing of authors like the early twentieth-century thriller writer Edgar Wallace, or the famous Agatha Christie whose sales run into billions, Charteris’ sales record for his more modest output remains very substantial. Publication of his fiction tailed off in the 1980s, but from December 2012 Mulholland Books at Hodder and Stoughton commenced republication of thirty-five Saint titles.

    ABSTRACT The Witness of the Saints: Literary Method and Theological Matter in the Hagiographical Novels of Evelyn Waugh, Frederick Buechner, and Walter Wangerin, Jr. Rachel Lynn Payne, Ph.D. Mentor: Ralph C. Wood, Ph.D. Evelyn Waugh, Frederick Buechner, and Walter Wangerin bring the contemporary witness of three obscure saints to life in the pages of their historical fiction. These modern hagiographers perceive divine revelation in all aspects of the natural world, and their fiction reflects this worldview and attempts to make it manifest for their audience. Sometimes they succeed brilliantly; at other times the seams in their tapestry of art and faith are glaringly visible—to the point that they compromise the fabric’s integrity. Many secular critics dismiss their work because they admit to plying their artistic talent for the sake of illuminating sacred mysteries. Waugh, Buechner and Wangerin recognize the pitfalls of embodying supernatural realities in concrete images, but they are eager to imitate the biblical model by recasting sacred mystery into story. The way they found to do this in Helena, Brendan, and Saint Julian is to use the outline of a historical saint’s life and experiment with the genre, narrative voice, metaphorical language, magical realism, and comic vision to shape a work of literary art that reflects their faith perspective. Moreover, they weave their own life-stories into fictionalized accounts of saints’ lives. Their obsessions with sin and penance, their fears of abandonment and death, their concerns about strained relationships with parents and difficult neighbors—all find a place in these writers’ hagiographical narratives.

WP 1836 – December 2018 The Saint-Simonians and the birth of social justice in France Adrien Lutz Abstract: This paper concerns the birth of the idea of social justice, which in France dates to the 19th century. It argues that the idea of social justice was able to emerge in France due to particular conditions, which were met for the first time by the Saint-Simonians. We first shed light on the transition in France from a commercial system to one marked by increasing industrialization, which raised new questions regarding economic justice and the composition of ownership. The Saint-Simonians were among the first to criticize this new composition, and to seek a means to organize society on a fair basis. We then explain how the Saint-Simonians came to theorize this new organization: according to them, the value of things lies in work.
