Follow the Saint? But of Curse, Silly Question.By Bruce J BlanchardDo I or you follow the Saint? Silly question, comrade. Of course, we do. The Saint is a man who lives by his own rules and he refuses to live by the demands of others. He has an inner drive looking at the collection of boodle, anything pushing Claud Eustace Teal to showing the veins of frustration in a game only they understand, and an adventure awaiting everyone in the scheme whether they wish it or not. Follow the introductions and watch him make the opportunities his own. Follow the Saint has three novellas from Mr. Charteris: The Miracle Tea Party, The invisible Millionaire, and The Affair of Hogsbatham. One comes by accident, the second by an intriguing letter, and the last by the Saint fulfilling his inner wandering Muse of Impishness. The Miracle Tea Party begins with a mugging of Claud Eustace himself, a victim of circumstance. Wrong place, wrong time. Follow the money in a tea packet, a radio show, and a plot of spies. Simon Templar is on top of it, looking out for Teal's rumbling, complaining tummy. The Invisible Millionaire drags Simon and Hoppy, the mentally challenged, into a situation of deceit and murder. The Saint can be a pawn but always a major player. The Affair of Hogsbotham sees the Saint and Hoppy in a simple act of burglary to bring down a self moralistic crusader because he wanted to and because the man deserved it. Pick the wrong house, enter in with both feet, wade through the loud strains of The Ride of the Valkyries, kidnap a bank manager, and the fun begins. Hogsbotham is not off the hook with Simon Templar doing what he can to bring him down. These stories are not the Saint in total command and following the dictates of fate and his inner nature. Most of what happen are clues leading to Simon thinking on his feet, getting what he can for himself and feeding Claud Eustace some arrests and frustrations. Not the best of Saint stories and enough to keep you reading.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It may be escapist but it is great fun!By Pat BlackSo far I have enjoyed all the Saint stories I've read. Another great installment!By Carol KiekowThis book is another great compilation of three stories that aid us in celebrating that 20th century buccaneer! Just as Charteris has done in the past, he has given us many twists and turns, keeping us guessing the whole time! I heartily recommend it! Three more classic adventures for the Saint in which he discovers some truly miraculous tea, agrees to meet a woman with some information on a major swindle—but finds her dead—and, in the last story, decides to take the self- appointed guardian of the nation’s morality down a peg or two, only to end up in the aftermath of a bank robbery… About the AuthorLeslie Charteris was born in Singapore on May 12th, 1907. With his mother and brother, he moved to England in 1919 and attended Rossall School in Lancashire before moving on to Cambridge University to study law. His studies there came to a halt when a publisher accepted his first novel. His third book, entitled Meet the Tiger!, was written when he was twenty years old and published in September 1928. It introduced the world to Simon Templar, aka the Saint. He continued to write about the Saint until 1983 when the last book, Salvage for the Saint, was published. The books, which have been translated into over thirty languages, number nearly a hundred and have sold over 40 million copies around the world. They’ve inspired, to date, fifteen feature films, three TV series, ten radio series, and a comic strip that was written by Charteris and syndicated around the world for over a decade. He enjoyed travelling but settled for long periods in Hollywood, Florida, and finally in Surrey, England. He was awarded the Cartier Diamond Dagger by the Crime Writers’ Association in 1992, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement. He died the following year.To find out more about Leslie Charteris and his work, visit www.lesliecharteris.com. • Session 20 Speak
SESSION 20 SPEAK GOAL The goal of this is session is for the teens to see the communion of saints as their extended family, to understand what it means to be a witness of the faith, and to get to know a few modern saints. KEY CONCEPTS Confirmation calls us to be witnesses of faith and provides us with the graces to do so. Being a witness means being a martyr; martyrdom does not necessarily mean dying for the faith, but requires a willingness to sacrifice and suffer for truth. When learning how to become better witnesses, we should look to the examples of other members of the Church — particularly Mary and the saints. KEY TERMS Martyr: A witness to the truth of the faith, in which the martyr endures even death to be faithful to Christ. Saint: The “holy one” who leads a life in union with God through the grace of Christ and receives the reward of eternal life. SCRIPTURE: 2 Timothy 1:6-8, Acts 2:1-11, Matthew 16:24-27 CATECHISM: 954-959, 963-969, 1302-1304, 2471-2474 ABOUT THIS CONFIRMATION SESSION The Gather is a fun game of Family Feud, which helps emphasize that this is a session about family, namely the communion of saints. The Proclaim teaches about the important role Mary and the communion of saints play in the teens’ lives. The Break gives the teens an opportunity to get to know a saint from our modern era more personally. The Send is a group prayer during which the teens ask the saints to pray for them through one of the Church’s oldest prayers, the Litany of Saints.

  • The Enactment of Religious Conversion in Medieval and Early Modern European Saint Plays
Transformed Within, Transformed Without: The Enactment of Religious Conversion in Medieval and Early Modern European Saint Plays Emily Ciavarella Kuntz Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy under the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2020 © 2020 Emily Ciavarella Kuntz All Rights Reserved Abstract Transformed Within, Transformed Without: The Enactment of Religious Conversion in Medieval and Early Modern European Saint Plays Emily Ciavarella Kuntz My dissertation investigates the ways in which both medieval and early modern saint plays depict and incite religious conversion through self-aware theatrical techniques. In each of my chapters, I examine one or two popular saint plays from a given period and area (medieval England, medieval France, early modern Spain, and early modern England) and show how each play invites the audience to undergo a spiritual shift parallel to that of the saint protagonist. These playmakers harnessed the affective power and technology of theatrical performance to invite the audience to engage with performed religious conversion in a controlled, celebratory environment and to encourage them to convert toward a more deeply felt Christianity. The plays reconfigured the audience’s sensory and intellectual understanding of Christian theology in order for the audience to recognize spiritual truth within an inherently communal, participatory, and performative space. The plays I examine depend on the audience’s familiarity with theatrical culture and practice in order to distinguish between sincere and insincere religious performance. By making the process of conversion a theatrical performance onstage, these plays could advocate for the theatrical medium as a genuine and effective catalyst for spiritual renewal.

The Life of Saint Paul of the Cross Founder of the Congregation of the Cross and Passion 1694-1775 Volume 1 – 1694-1741 Father Louis Therese of Jesus Agonizing, C.P. 1873 Fr. Simon Woods, C.P. (Translated from the third French Edition) 1959 (INDEX TO VOLUME ONE ON FINAL PAGES) DEDICATION to HIS EMINENCE FERDINAND CARDINAL DONNET Archbishop of Bordeaux Your Eminence, The Life of Saint Paul of the Cross, which it is my privilege to dedicate to you, may rightfully be called your very own. Without your Eminence the work may not have been completed, and I may never have realized the idea that I had in mind for a very long time. It is then the humble fruit of a tree planted by your own hands in the vineyard confided to your care by the Heavenly Father. It was when your Eminence was in Rome for the Beatification of our holy Founder that you obtained from His Holiness Pope Pius IX the sons of Saint Paul of the Cross for your Archdiocese… And, if this little family was welcome and took its humble beginnings in the fruitful soil of France under your protection and guidance, is it not due to your paternal interest and initiative? Soon, it is true, a learned and zealous clergy imitated your zeal; but in those days of supreme struggle, of unceasing conflict against the rights of the Church, your Eminence realized that it is necessary that zeal be united with learning, especially when the war “against the Lord and his Christ” becomes so universal.
