Follow the Saint? But of Curse, Silly Question.By Bruce J BlanchardDo I or you follow the Saint? Silly question, comrade. Of course, we do. The Saint is a man who lives by his own rules and he refuses to live by the demands of others. He has an inner drive looking at the collection of boodle, anything pushing Claud Eustace Teal to showing the veins of frustration in a game only they understand, and an adventure awaiting everyone in the scheme whether they wish it or not. Follow the introductions and watch him make the opportunities his own. Follow the Saint has three novellas from Mr. Charteris: The Miracle Tea Party, The invisible Millionaire, and The Affair of Hogsbatham. One comes by accident, the second by an intriguing letter, and the last by the Saint fulfilling his inner wandering Muse of Impishness. The Miracle Tea Party begins with a mugging of Claud Eustace himself, a victim of circumstance. Wrong place, wrong time. Follow the money in a tea packet, a radio show, and a plot of spies. Simon Templar is on top of it, looking out for Teal's rumbling, complaining tummy. The Invisible Millionaire drags Simon and Hoppy, the mentally challenged, into a situation of deceit and murder. The Saint can be a pawn but always a major player. The Affair of Hogsbotham sees the Saint and Hoppy in a simple act of burglary to bring down a self moralistic crusader because he wanted to and because the man deserved it. Pick the wrong house, enter in with both feet, wade through the loud strains of The Ride of the Valkyries, kidnap a bank manager, and the fun begins. Hogsbotham is not off the hook with Simon Templar doing what he can to bring him down. These stories are not the Saint in total command and following the dictates of fate and his inner nature. Most of what happen are clues leading to Simon thinking on his feet, getting what he can for himself and feeding Claud Eustace some arrests and frustrations. Not the best of Saint stories and enough to keep you reading.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. It may be escapist but it is great fun!By Pat BlackSo far I have enjoyed all the Saint stories I've read. No real violence, terribly moral, Silly, unlikely, ridiculous even- but enjoyable nonetheless. Can't read too many too close together but spaced out now and again I'm sure I shall be enjoying The Saint for years to come. You can too. Ebook or paper or hardcover. Another great installment!By Carol KiekowThis book is another great compilation of three stories that aid us in celebrating that 20th century buccaneer! Just as Charteris has done in the past, he has given us many twists and turns, keeping us guessing the whole time! I heartily recommend it! Three more classic adventures for the Saint in which he discovers some truly miraculous tea, agrees to meet a woman with some information on a major swindle—but finds her dead—and, in the last story, decides to take the self- appointed guardian of the nation’s morality down a peg or two, only to end up in the aftermath of a bank robbery… About the AuthorLeslie Charteris was born in Singapore on May 12th, 1907. With his mother and brother, he moved to England in 1919 and attended Rossall School in Lancashire before moving on to Cambridge University to study law. His studies there came to a halt when a publisher accepted his first novel. His third book, entitled Meet the Tiger!, was written when he was twenty years old and published in September 1928. It introduced the world to Simon Templar, aka the Saint. He continued to write about the Saint until 1983 when the last book, Salvage for the Saint, was published. The books, which have been translated into over thirty languages, number nearly a hundred and have sold over 40 million copies around the world. They’ve inspired, to date, fifteen feature films, three TV series, ten radio series, and a comic strip that was written by Charteris and syndicated around the world for over a decade. He enjoyed travelling but settled for long periods in Hollywood, Florida, and finally in Surrey, England. He was awarded the Cartier Diamond Dagger by the Crime Writers’ Association in 1992, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement. He died the following year.To find out more about Leslie Charteris and his work, visit www.lesliecharteris.com.
