La problematica ‘attuale’ del ruolo dell’impero nel mondo medievale influisce quindi profondamente sull’atteggiamento di Dante nei confronti della storia di Roma antica, che è chiamata in causa a dimostrare la ‘provvidenzialità’ e quindi la ‘giustizia’ dell’impero a lui contemporaneo. È una storia che ha come culmine Augusto, ovvero l’impero, della quale però si riportano essenzialmente fatti e personaggi in cui rifulge quella virtus repubblicana che avrebbe avuto il suo compimento proprio nel principato. Questa visione della storia di Roma è in fondo quella di Virgilio e di Livio: la prospettiva ‘attualizzante’ di Dante non costituisce quindi un impedimento alla comprensione dell’antica storia di Roma, ma anzi gli permette di entrare in sintonia con i suoi più antichi e autorevoli testimoni. La storia di Roma antica è per Dante, secondo la teoria della translatio imperii, la storia delle origini e dello sviluppo dell’impero a lui contemporaneo, ritenuto necessario al bene esse mundi.1 Pertanto questa storia è frequentemente chiamata in causa per dimostrare la ‘provvidenzialità’ e quindi la ‘giustizia’ di questo impero. -

THE POLITICAL PERSECUTION OF A POET A Detail of Dante's Exile By Jason Ader John Poling History 101 April 2012 Durante degli Alighieri, known throughout the world as simply Dante, was a fourteenth century Italian poet, philosopher, literary theorist, and politician. He is best known for his epic Commedia, which was later dubbed The Divine Comedy. Commedia is generally considered the greatest Italian literary work and a masterpiece of world literature.1 Due to the turbulent political atmosphere of his time and place, Dante spent over a third of his life living in exile. This paper will explore the details of Dante's exile and the influence that it had upon his work. Dante was born in Florence around 1265 to an aristocratic family of moderate wealth and status. Dante's father was a notary, and Dante was the only child of his father's first marriage. Dante's mother died when he was about thirteen years old. His father then remarried and his second wife bore another son and two daughters before he too died when Dante was about eighteen.2 It is thought that at around six years of age Dante entered school. -

Elio Costa From locus amoris to Infernal Pentecost: the Sin of Brunetto Latini The fame of Brunetto Latini was until recently tied to his role in Inferno 15 rather than to the intrinsic literary or philosophical merit of his own works.' Leaving aside, for the moment, the complex question of Latini's influence on the author of the Commedia, the encounter, and particularly the words "che 'n la mente m' è fìtta, e or m'accora, / la cara e buona imagine paterna / di voi quando nel mondo ad ora ad ora / m'insegnavate come l'uom s'ettema" (82-85) do seem to acknowledge a profound debt by the pilgrim towards the old notary. Only one other figure in the Inferno is addressed with a similar expression of gratitude, and that is, of course, Virgil: Tu se' lo mio maestro e'I mio autore; tu se' solo colui da cu' io tolsi lo bello stilo che m'ha fatto onore. {Inf. 1.85-87) If Virgil is antonomastically the teacher, what facet of Dante's cre- ative personality was affected by Latini? The encounter between the notary and the pilgrim in Inferno 15 is made all the more intriguing by the use of the same phrase "lo mio maestro" (97) to refer to Virgil, silent throughout the episode except for his single utterance "Bene ascolta chi la nota" (99). That it is the poet and not the pilgrim who thus refers to Virgil at this point, when the two magisterial figures, one leading forward to Beatrice and the other backward to the city of strife, conflict and exile, provides a clear hint of tension between "present" and "past" teachers. -

Although only two of his major works will be read in their entirety, the Divine Comedy and the Vita nova, constant references will be made to other writings. Besides a stylistic and formal analysis, numerous thematic strains will be researched and followed throughout Dante’s production. Particular attention will be paid to such concepts as allegory, poetic auto-interpretation, autobiography, and the ever-changing concept of love. Learning goals: Students will be trained to do a close analysis of literary texts, to put poetic and prose texts in conversation with philosophical ideas, to discern the boundaries of literature, philosophy, and theology. They will be assessed by means of oral presentations (one long, one short), one short paper, one long (publishable) paper, and class participation. De Vulgari Eloquentia
The De vulgari eloquentia, written by Dante in the early years of the fourteenth century, is the only known work of medieval literary theory to have been produced by a practising poet, and the first to assert the intrinsic superiority of living, vernacular languages over Latin. Its opening consideration of language as a sign-system includes foreshadowings of twentieth-century semiotics, and later sections contain the first serious effort at literary criticism based on close ana- lytical reading since the classical era. Steven Botterill here offers an accurate Latin text and a readable English translation of the treatise, together with notes and introductory material, thus making available a work which is relevant not only to Dante's poetry and the history of Italian literature, but to our whole understanding of late medieval poetics, linguistics and literary practice. The Study of the Fundamentals of Martin Luther’s Theology in the Light of Ecumenism 1 Tuomo Mannermaa Translated and edited by Kirsi Stjerna It is not unusual in the history of academic disciplines that new ideas concerning the fundamentals of a particular discipline emerge either by accident or as a result of impulses from another field of scholarship. This is the case also in today’s Luther research. Two particular fields can be named from most recent history, fields with significant impulses for new insights: ecumenism and philosophy. The philosophical impulses are connected with the task of locating Luther’s theology in regard to both scholasticism, which preceded Luther, and the philosophy of the modern times, which succeeded him. Ecumenism presents its own challenges for Luther research and Lutheran theological tradition. It is the latter issue that I wish to address here, touching upon the issues related to philosophy only as far as it is helpful in light of ecumenical questions at stake. The ecumenical impulses originate, above all, from two sources: Lutheran–Orthodox theological discussions, on the one hand, and Lutheran–Catholic theological encounters, on the other. The challenge issued to Luther research by Lutheran–Orthodox discussions lies in the theme “Luther and the doctrine of divinization,” whereas Lutheran–Catholic cooperation in Luther research has set out to clarify the theme, “Luther as a theologian of love.” Especially the late Catholic Luther specialist Peter Manns has unraveled the latter topic wit h his fruitful Luther interpretation. The first of these two topics, “Luther and theosis (divinization),” is fundamental in the sense that it gives expression to the patristic standard of comparison that all these three denominations share and that can serve as a starting point in their process toward a common understanding. -

RAFFA, The University of Texas at Austin The approach of the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante’s death is a propi- tious time to recall the events that drove him from his native Florence and marked his life in various Italian cities before he found his final refuge in Ra- venna, where he died and was buried in 1321. Drawing on early chronicles and biographies, modern historical research and biographical criticism, and the poet’s own writings, I construct this narrative of “Dante’s Political Life” for the milestone commemoration of his death. The poet’s politically-motivated exile, this biographical essay shows, was destined to become one of the world’s most fortunate misfortunes. There is a section of notes to the text, which, though not actually identified, is the translation by Henry F. Cary. Dante Alighieri. The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri. I. Inferno. With translation and comment by John D. Sinclair. New York: Oxford University Press, 1959. This is a paperback edition identical to the hard-cover edition of 1948. The translation, in prose, with the original Italian on opposite pages, is based on the critical text of the Società Dantesca Italiana; “the few departures . from that text are limited to readings adopted either in Moore’s or Casella’s texts.” Each canto is very briefly annotated and followed by a “Note,” or commentary. In a preface, Mr. Sinclair acknowledges his indebtedness to major recent commentaries and studies, from Scartazzini to Croce, from which he has quoted freely.
