Biblical Faith Evoked in the Hagiographical Novels Of ABSTRACT The Witness of the Saints: Literary Method and Theological Matter in the Hagiographical Novels of Evelyn Waugh, Frederick Buechner, and Walter Wangerin, Jr. Rachel Lynn Payne, Ph.D. Mentor: Ralph C. Wood, Ph.D. Evelyn Waugh, Frederick Buechner, and Walter Wangerin bring the contemporary witness of three obscure saints to life in the pages of their historical fiction. These modern hagiographers perceive divine revelation in all aspects of the natural world, and their fiction reflects this worldview and attempts to make it manifest for their audience. Sometimes they succeed brilliantly; at other times the seams in their tapestry of art and faith are glaringly visible—to the point that they compromise the fabric’s integrity. Many secular critics dismiss their work because they admit to plying their artistic talent for the sake of illuminating sacred mysteries. Waugh, Buechner and Wangerin recognize the pitfalls of embodying supernatural realities in concrete images, but they are eager to imitate the biblical model by recasting sacred mystery into story. The way they found to do this in Helena, Brendan, and Saint Julian is to use the outline of a historical saint’s life and experiment with the genre, narrative voice, metaphorical language, magical realism, and comic vision to shape a work of literary art that reflects their faith perspective. Moreover, they weave their own life-stories into fictionalized accounts of saints’ lives. Their obsessions with sin and penance, their fears of abandonment and death, their concerns about strained relationships with parents and difficult neighbors—all find a place in these writers’ hagiographical narratives. Waugh idealizes the supernatural, so he writes about a saint who goes in search of a physical symbol of faith to represent the inner transformation of baptism and belief. Buechner romanticizes the natural world, so he conjures a saint who seeks a celestial paradise but finally finds hope and love in his earthly companions. Wangerin yearns to show his readers a way to ease the weight of sin and guilt, so he retells an ancient legend about a seemingly hopeless case to show the triumphant power of God’s grace and mercy. All three perform a valuable service by reviving the cult of an early medieval saint for a contemporary religious audience, but the one who most effectively unites form and function is Walter Wangerin in Saint Julian.     THE BUILDING OF A NEW CHURCH DEDICATED TO SAINT JULIAN IN 1682 Eugene F. Montanaro When Achille Ferres wrote his Descrizione Storica Delle Chiese Di Malta E Gozo (1866), he recorded of the village of Saint Julians, somewhat summarily: La sua primitiva chiesuola e antichissima, fabbricata verso if 1580. Essa pero venne riedificata nel1682 .1 Though quite remarkably accurate, Ferres' s account does not provide specific source notes, and cannot therefore be regarded as authoritative. In this short study I shall attempt to place on record for the first time, archival material concerning the building of a new church at Saint Julians in 1682. The relevant documentation tends to confirm Achille Ferres's unequivocal assertion that this new church was in fact built on the site of a humble chapel. THE SUPPLICA The licence (called a faculty) to demolish the existing chapel dedicated to St. Julian and to rebuild a larger church, was obtained from the competent ecclesiastical authorities on 2 March 1682. The necessary permit was granted in answer to a supplica, or petition, submitted to the Bishop of Malta by Don Mario Haxixa and Domenico Gat, procuratori della Ven. Chiesa sotto titolo diS.     Chapter 3 Geoffrey of Monmouth and the English Past Rebecca Thomas Geoffrey does not grant much space to the English in the De gestis Britonum. In one respect, this is unsurprising: Geoffrey’s history extends back to the origins of the Britons in Troy, spending a significant amount of time in pre-Roman Britain, and as such the English enter the narrative rather late in the day. Even after their arrival, however, the English do not appear in the way which we might expect. The traditional narrative of the development of the English kingdoms, pioneered by sources such as Bede’s Ecclesiastical History and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, and accepted and reproduced by many of Geoffrey’s contemporary Anglo-Norman historians, has no place in the DGB. With his strikingly different version of events, Geoffrey certainly cannot be accused of lacking originality in his treatment of English history. The way in which he approached this subject is highly significant not only for our understanding of his attitude toward the English, but also for the composition of the DGB more generally. There was no shortage of contemporary historians writing of the English past, such as Henry of Huntingdon, the first version of whose History of the English, with which Geoffrey was most likely familiar, was completed by 1130. Henry presents us with a conventional account of English history, drawing heavily on Bede and the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle.1 Hengist and Horsa arrive in Britain in 449, and after recounting their dealings with the Britons, Henry pro- ceeds through the various other Saxon settlers of the 5th and 6th centuries.

King Arthur remains a hero of legend in the annals of the British Isles. However, one question remains: did King Arthur actually exist? Early medieval historical sources provide clues that have identified various figures that may have been the template for King Arthur. Such candidates such as the second century Roman general Lucius Artorius Castus, the fifth century Breton leader Riothamus, and the sixth century British leader Ambrosius Aurelianus hold high esteem as possible candidates for the historical King Arthur. Through the analysis of original sources and authors such as the Easter Annals, Nennius, Bede, Gildas, and the Annales Cambriae, parallels can be established which connect these historical figures to aspects of the Arthur of literary tradition.

In the eighth century, John of Damascus composed four homilies in her honor. Saint Anselm, ât the end. of the el-eventh centuryr prayed fer-- vently to Mary. In the twelfth century, Amadeus of Lausanne composed eight honilies in her honor. In all three' Mary has the power to intercede for sins, to grant grace a¡d protec- tion, by her divine maternity to approach very close to God' a¡d. to serve as Queen of Heaven, next in power after her Son. This basic understanding of her power has not changed significantly since the eleventh century.
