Interpreting Tempo and Rubato in Chopin's Music
Interpreting tempo and rubato in Chopin’s music: A matter of tradition or individual style? Li-San Ting A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales School of the Arts and Media Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences June 2013 ABSTRACT The main goal of this thesis is to gain a greater understanding of Chopin performance and interpretation, particularly in relation to tempo and rubato. This thesis is a comparative study between pianists who are associated with the Chopin tradition, primarily the Polish pianists of the early twentieth century, along with French pianists who are connected to Chopin via pedagogical lineage, and several modern pianists playing on period instruments. Through a detailed analysis of tempo and rubato in selected recordings, this thesis will explore the notions of tradition and individuality in Chopin playing, based on principles of pianism and pedagogy that emerge in Chopin’s writings, his composition, and his students’ accounts. Many pianists and teachers assume that a tradition in playing Chopin exists but the basis for this notion is often not made clear. Certain pianists are considered part of the Chopin tradition because of their indirect pedagogical connection to Chopin. I will investigate claims about tradition in Chopin playing in relation to tempo and rubato and highlight similarities and differences in the playing of pianists of the same or different nationality, pedagogical line or era. I will reveal how the literature on Chopin’s principles regarding tempo and rubato relates to any common or unique traits found in selected recordings. -
Membra Jesu Nostri
Diskothek: Dietrich Buxtehude: Membra Jesu Nostri Montag, 26. -

Nikolai Demidenko Live at Wigmore Hall
HE PERFORMANCES on this two-CD set were recorded during Piano Masterworks, a series of six concerts given by Nikolai Demidenko in Wigmore Hall, London, between TJanuary and June 1993. Devised by AteÛ Orga, under the patronage of The Lord Birkett, sponsored by Lloyds Private Banking, these recitals ranged across 250 years of keyboard music, instrumental technique and the development of modern piano resource – from Scarlatti to Gubaidulina. As a concept the series was modelled on nineteenth-century Romantic practice. In Paris, between 1873 and 1877, Charles-Valentin Alkan gave regular ‘Petits Concerts de Musique Classique’ – six recitals each, surveying the repertoire from Couperin, Bach, Handel and Scarlatti to Weber, Chopin, Schumann and Mendelssohn. Later, the Russian Anton Rubinstein created a cycle of seven Historical Recitals with which he took his farewell of Europe in the mid-1880s. At over three hours individually, these embraced a repertoire from Byrd and John Bull to Balakirev and Tchaikovsky. Like Franz Liszt, Ferruccio Busoni, too, was historically aware, his programming ranging from Bach to Liapunov. COMPACT DISC 1 The Bohemian JAN VÁCLAV VO“ÍŠEK, an exact contemporary of Czerny, studied with his father (like Schubert’s, a schoolmaster) and then with Tomášek, who thought he had such ‘grosses Talent’ that he taught him for nothing. In 1813 he settled in Vienna, ‘the undisputed musical capital of the world’ (Spohr). Here he had lessons from Hummel and Moscheles. He became associated with Beethoven’s circle. He befriended Meyerbeer and Schubert. He conducted concerts of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (including Beethoven’s Second Symphony in 1819). -
GATEWAY TO EUROPE Belgium is a federal state in the heart of Europe. Flanders is the northern, Dutch-speaking part of Belgium. The Flemish Community counts more than 6 million inhabitants and is run by a government of its own with a number of specific competences, such as culture, education, media… Brussels, capital of Belgium and of Flanders as well, is home to the European Commission and many international cultural institutions. 5 PREFACE Smaller than a postage stamp! That’s how minute Flanders looks on a map of the world, if you can discover it at all. However, a felicitous turn of his- tory has made this region into an exciting crossroads of different cultures. This is why Flanders is so rich in creative talent and abundant with cultural activities. -

A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets
SECOND EDITION A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets Exploring unjustly neglected masterpieces An eBook by Lyle Chan published by Vexations840 a mysterious organization dedicated to classical music at its finest Second Edition, February 2013 © 2013 Vexations840 Pty Ltd PO Box 309, Edgecliff NSW 2027, Australia [email protected] you will enjoy visiting www.forgottenstringquartets.com 2 Introduction to the Second Edition As we stated in our First Edition, A Guide to Forgotten String Quartets was intended to take advantage of the swiftness of e-publishing and be revised quickly towards a second and subsequent editions. This Second Edition is the result of the very encouraging emails we’ve received. Most of your emails have been simply about how much you’ve enjoyed the coverage and found the eBook useful. Some of you have also brought additional works to our attention, many of which we’ve included here. This new edition adds another 10 quartets which amounts to nearly 3 hours of listening time. We’ve chosen a balance of little-known works by famous composers like Samuel Barber, Kurt Weill, Franz Liszt, Beethoven (yes, even this titan of a composer has neglected works) as well as composers whose entire output, not just their string quartets, is largely forgotten, such as Chevalier de Saint-George and Malipiero. And one of the new quartets is in fact a multicomposer suite of 16 movements from Russia called Les Vendredis, certainly one of the most interesting discoveries we’ve made. Since the First Edition, the internet app called Spotify has been widely adopted by the classical music community and so we have begun to include Spotify listening links – we’ll start with new works being added to this Second Edition, and retrospectively add links for the rest. -
