Master Class with Nikolai Demidenko Master Class with Nikolai Demidenko Tuesday 30 May 6pm, Salon Presented by Melbourne Recital Centre This master class is supported by Dr Cherilyn Tillman & Tam Vu and YMF Australia GUEST ARTIST Nikolai Demidenko piano Berta Brozgul piano Aleksandr Scriabin (1872-1915) Piano Sonata No.5, Op.53 James Zong piano Richard Strauss (1864 - 1949) / Percy Grainger (1882 - 1961) 'Ramble on Love 'from Der Rosenkavalier Gintaute Gataveckaite piano Robert Schumann (1810 - 1856) Piano Sonata No.2, Op.22, I Vivacissimo About Nikolai Demidenko At six years of age Nikolai went to the Gnessin School of Music where he studied with Anna Kantor. He also completed studies at the Moscow Conservatory with Dmitri Bashkirov and was a finalist at the 1976 Montreal and 1978 Tchaikovsky Competitions. He has worked with many of the major orchestras of the world including the London Philharmonic, the London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic and the St Petersburg Philharmonic with conductors Sir Roger Norrington, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Yuri Temirkanov and Sir Andrew Davis. Nikolai Demidenko’s passionate pianism is in demand worldwide. Frequent London recitals have included a series at the Barbican, the International Piano Series at Southbank Centre and recently the London Pianoforte Series at the Wigmore Hall – a Chopin recital which was featured as the only live performance in BBC Radio 3’s Chopin Experience, a weekend celebration of his complete works. Nikolai is renowned for his authoritative performances of the Russian concerto repertoire such as Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. He has a flourishing relationship with the St Petersburg Philharmonic and Yuri Temirkanov, with whom he performs regularly. He also enjoys a fruitful collaboration with several Russian artists who have made their homes in London; a cello and piano duo with Leonid Gorokhov; piano quartets with the exciting new Hermitage String Trio; and a two-piano partnership with Dmitri Alexeev, who likewise studied at the Moscow Conservatoire under Dmitri Bashkirov. Concerto engagements in recent and upcoming seasons include appearances with the Adelaide Symphony, Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Budapest Festival, Danish National Symphony, Melbourne Symphony, Orchestra National de France, Philharmonia, Queensland Symphony, Singapore Symphony, Orquesta Nacional de España, St Petersburg Philharmonic, Sinfonieorchester St Gallen, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony, Ulster and Hallé orchestras and tours in the U.K. and Ireland with the Prague Symphony Orchestra and in Spain with Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine. Demidenko is prolific in the recording studio. And has recorded albums of Bach–Busoni, Chopin, Clementi, Liszt, Medtner, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff for Hyperion Records. His recordings of Schubert, Schumann and concertos by Chopin and Medtner earned him each a Gramophone Award, and in 2010 his recordings of Chopin’s 24 Preludes, released on Onyx Classics, won the MIDEM Special Chopin Award for a new recording. In 2014 Nikolai was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Surrey in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the field of Music and the University. This performance marks Nikolai Demidenko’s third appearance in the Centre’s Great Performers series and includes a concert at Mildura Arts Centre on 31 May 2017. ABOUT THE MASTER CLASS LEADERSHIP CIRCLE & ENSEMBLE GIOVANE Supporting the development of Australian artists is a key goal of Melbourne Recital Centre, with particular emphasis on providing opportunities for serious music students and emerging young artists. These young musicians tell us that the opportunity to meet and learn through master classes greatly improves their personal development. The audience members who attend suggest that master classes, at times, can be even more revelatory than concerts. In 2011, the Centre hosted its first master class with Lang Lang and many other wonderful sessions have followed, led by musical luminaries including Jordi Savall, Susan Bullock, Joanna Macgregor, Maxim Rysanov, Midori and Amanda McBroom. In 2016 the program comprised five master classes inspiring 20 young artists and over 400 attendees. The participants include students from Melbourne’s schools and tertiary music institutions, including the Australian Academy of Music (ANAM) and the Melba Opera Trust. Students are also invited to watch. The Master Class Leadership Circle was initiated to encourage individuals with a passion for this particular form of artist development to join with like-minded supporters to expand the program. This year, the Circle has been further strengthened by the opportunity to give collectively through Ensemble Giovane. This is a group of donors whose gifts are pooled to fund a master class each year. With their help and that of our other generous Master Class Leadership Circle supporters, the Centre will provide five master classes with Great Performers in 2017. Melbourne Recital Centre acknowledges the people of the Kulin nation on whose land this event is being presented. 31 Sturt Street, Southbank, Victoria 3006 PRINCIPAL GOVERNMENT PARTNER P: 03 9699 3333 F: 03 9207 2662 E: [email protected] W: melbournerecital.com.au.

  • Interpreting Tempo and Rubato in Chopin's Music
Interpreting tempo and rubato in Chopin’s music: A matter of tradition or individual style? Li-San Ting A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of New South Wales School of the Arts and Media Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences June 2013 ABSTRACT The main goal of this thesis is to gain a greater understanding of Chopin performance and interpretation, particularly in relation to tempo and rubato. This thesis is a comparative study between pianists who are associated with the Chopin tradition, primarily the Polish pianists of the early twentieth century, along with French pianists who are connected to Chopin via pedagogical lineage, and several modern pianists playing on period instruments. Through a detailed analysis of tempo and rubato in selected recordings, this thesis will explore the notions of tradition and individuality in Chopin playing, based on principles of pianism and pedagogy that emerge in Chopin’s writings, his composition, and his students’ accounts. Many pianists and teachers assume that a tradition in playing Chopin exists but the basis for this notion is often not made clear. Certain pianists are considered part of the Chopin tradition because of their indirect pedagogical connection to Chopin. I will investigate claims about tradition in Chopin playing in relation to tempo and rubato and highlight similarities and differences in the playing of pianists of the same or different nationality, pedagogical line or era. I will reveal how the literature on Chopin’s principles regarding tempo and rubato relates to any common or unique traits found in selected recordings.

  • Nikolai Demidenko Live at Wigmore Hall
HE PERFORMANCES on this two-CD set were recorded during Piano Masterworks, a series of six concerts given by Nikolai Demidenko in Wigmore Hall, London, between TJanuary and June 1993. Devised by AteÛ Orga, under the patronage of The Lord Birkett, sponsored by Lloyds Private Banking, these recitals ranged across 250 years of keyboard music, instrumental technique and the development of modern piano resource – from Scarlatti to Gubaidulina. As a concept the series was modelled on nineteenth-century Romantic practice. In Paris, between 1873 and 1877, Charles-Valentin Alkan gave regular ‘Petits Concerts de Musique Classique’ – six recitals each, surveying the repertoire from Couperin, Bach, Handel and Scarlatti to Weber, Chopin, Schumann and Mendelssohn. Later, the Russian Anton Rubinstein created a cycle of seven Historical Recitals with which he took his farewell of Europe in the mid-1880s. At over three hours individually, these embraced a repertoire from Byrd and John Bull to Balakirev and Tchaikovsky. Like Franz Liszt, Ferruccio Busoni, too, was historically aware, his programming ranging from Bach to Liapunov. COMPACT DISC 1 The Bohemian JAN VÁCLAV VO“ÍŠEK, an exact contemporary of Czerny, studied with his father (like Schubert’s, a schoolmaster) and then with Tomášek, who thought he had such ‘grosses Talent’ that he taught him for nothing. In 1813 he settled in Vienna, ‘the undisputed musical capital of the world’ (Spohr). Here he had lessons from Hummel and Moscheles. He became associated with Beethoven’s circle. He befriended Meyerbeer and Schubert. He conducted concerts of the Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (including Beethoven’s Second Symphony in 1819).

The Mandelring Quartet don’t overplay the savagery and shocks - their approach is lyrical, sane and effortlessly musical. They can deploy the big guns when necessary – the second movement of the 10th quartet is a good example – but they always care about the line, the musical argument. You’re not lectured or shouted at, but drawn in. Shostakovich’s quartets plot an interesting trajectory, from the superficially lightweight First of 1938 to the death-haunted 15th completed in 1974. The last works have their profoundly depressing moments, but these players accentuate the glimpses of light – the powerful, defiant major coda to the 12th or the radiant harmonic language of the 14th. There’s a body and lack of shrillness to the string sound – helped by nicely nourished viola and cello tone, so that the more aggressive climaxes don’t sound like offcuts from Bernard Hermann’s Psycho soundtrack. It’s hard to single out the highlights, but both the Fifth and Sixth quartets with their blend of desperation, wistfulness and hard-earned joy nearly reduced me to tears. I was gripped as these players moved from the Third quartet’s jaunty Fawlty Towers-style opening to far darker, more probing territory.
