Finnish Drama in Chinese Translation
FINNISH KULLERVO AND CHINESE KUNGFU Chapman Chen Project funded by Finnish Literature Information Center Hong Kong [email protected] Abstract Introduction: There are many important Finnish plays but, due to language barrier, Finnish drama is seldom exported, particularly to Hong Kong and China.. Objective: To find out differences in mentality between the Finnish and Chinese peoples by comparing the partially localized Chinese translation of Aleksis Kivi’s tragedy, Kullervo, with genuine Chinese martial arts literature. Methodology: 1. Chapman Chen has translated the Finnish classic, Kullervo, directly from Finnish into Chinese and published it in 2005. 2. In Chen’s Chinese translation, cultural markers are domesticated. On the other hand, values, characterization, plot, and rhythm remain unchanged. 3. According to Gideon Tory, the translator has to strike a golden mean between the norms of the source language and the target language. 4. Lau Tingci lists and explicates the essential components of martial arts drama. 5. According to Ehrnrooth’s “Mentality”, equality is the most important value in Finnish culture. Findings: i. Finland emphasizes independence while China emphasizes bilateral relationships. ii. The Finnish people loves freedom, but Gai Sizung argues that the Chinese people is slavish. iii. Finns are mature while many Chinese are, according to Sun Lung-kee (“The Deep Structure of Chinese Culture”; “The Deep Structure of Chinese Sexuality”), fixated at the oral and anal stages. iv. Finnish society highly values equality while Chinese interpersonal relationships are extremely complicated and hierachical. If Kullervo were a genuine Chinese kungfu story, the plot would be much more convoluted. Conclusion: The differences between Finnish and Chinese mentalities are so significant that partially localized or adapted Chinese translations of Finnish drama may still be able to introduce Finnish culture to the Chinese audience. -

Erkki Pekkilä C.A. GOTTLUND JA KANSANMUSIIKKI Jos halutaan tutkia kansanmusiikin historiaa, voidaan menetellä kahdella tavalla. Voidaan etsiä uusia dokumentteja, jotka valaisisivat sitä mistä ei tähän asti ole tiedetty tai voidaan turvautua vanhoihin dokumentteihin mutta tulkita niitä uudelleen, antaa niille uusia merkityksiä. Valittiin kumpi tie hyvänsä, molemmat vaativat dokumentteja - nuotteja, käsi kirjoituksia, piirroksia, maalauksia, valokuvia, äänitteitä - sillä doku mentit luovat pohjan niille väittärnille, joita menneisyyden tapahtumista tehdään. Ellei ole dokumentteja, ei myöskään ole perusteita väittämille ja ellei ole perusteita, ei ole historiallista "totuutta". Ilman dokumentteja historiasta voidaan esittää vain arvailuja, mikä sitten taas ei ole histo riankiIjoitusta; tällaisilla arveluilla on pelkästään mielipidearvo. Kansanmusiikin paradoksi on, että se ei jätä itsestään dokumentteja. "Aito" kansanmusiikki eli kansanmusiikki sellaisena, miksi se sanakirja määritelmissä käsitetään, on muistinvaraista perinnettä. Muistinvarainen perinne taas on häviävää: ellei sitä tallenneta, sen olemassaolo lakkaa. Tietysti perinnetuotteen olemassaolo saattaa jatkua sillä että se välittyy sukupolvelta toiselle. Samalla tuote kuitenkin kokee muutoksia, eikä nykyhetkenä kerätyn tuotteen iästä ja historiasta voida esittää muuta kuin arveluja. Jälkipolvien onneksi kansanmusiikkia kuitenkin on tallennettu: kansansävelmiä on kerätty, soittimia säilötty museoihin, kansanmusiikin harjoittamisesta kirjoitettu kuvauksia, soittajia valokuvattu. -

There is no need to answer this, but perhaps we may assume that sooner or later someone would have written the books which would have formed the necessary building material for the national identity of the Finns. During the mid 1980s, when the 150th anniversary of the Kalevala was being celebrated in Finland, several international seminars were held and thousands of pages of research and articles were published. At that time some studies appeared in which the birth of the nation state was examined from a pan-European perspective. SMALL NATION STATES "The nation state - an independent political unit whose people share a common language and believe they have a common cultural heritage - is essentially a nineteenth-century invention, based on eighteenth-century philosophy, and which became a reality for the most part in either the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The circumstances in which this process took place were for the most part marked by the decline of great empires whose centralised sources of power and antiquated methods of administrations prevented an effective response to economic and social change, and better education, with all the aspirations for freedom of thought and political action that accompany such changes." Thus said Professor Michael Branch (University of London) at a conference on the literatures of the Uralic peoples held in Finland in the summer of 1991. -

The Finnish of Rautalampi and Värmland – a Comparison
TORBJÖRN SÖDER Uppsala University The Finnish of Rautalampi and Värmland – A comparison Abstract In this paper some of the features of the Finnish spo ken in the former greatparish1 of Rautalampi and Värmland are discussed. These two Finnish varieties are, owing to their com mon historical background, closely affiliated, both being defined as Eastern Finnish Savo dialects. These varieties were isolated from each other for hundreds of years and the circumstances of the two speech communities are in many respects different. The language contact situation in Värmland involves Swedish varie ties and Värmland Finnish but limited contact with other Finnish varieties. The contact situation in what once was the greatparish of Rautalampi involves mainly Finnish varieties, both dialects and Standard Finnish. Social and economic circumstances have also had an effect on the contact situations, especially since the 19th century when Finland was separated from Sweden and in dustrialization made its definite entrance into both areas. The dif fering language contact situations have in some respects yielded different results. This paper provides examples of the differences, which have occurred as an effect of the circumstances in Rau talampi and in Värmland. I provide examples from the phonologi cal, morphological, lexical, and syntactic levels and discuss them in light of the language contact situation in these areas. Kansanrunoudentutkimuksen, kirjallisuushistorian ja kansankirjoittajien tutkimuksen kansakuva 1820-luvulta 2010-luvulle Niina Hämäläinen, Kati Mikkola, Ilona Pikkanen ja Eija Stark ernakulaarin käsitettä on viime vuosina alettu käyttää enenevässä määrin ilmiöistä, joita aiemmin on kuvattu kansankielisiksi, kansanomaisiksi tai kansankulttuuriksi. Tämä heijasteleeV syvällisempää muutosta aiemmin kansaksi määriteltyjen tai siihen tiiviisti kytkey- tyvien monimuotoisten tutkimuskohteiden, mutta myös tiettyjen tutkimusalojen luonteen ymmärtämisessä. Mahdollisia syitä vernakulaarin käyttöön tutkimuskirjallisuudessa ja tutki- joiden analyyttisenä työkaluna voi etsiä kansaan liittyvistä poliittisista ja ideologisista kon- notaatioista. Erityisen merkittäviä kansan ja kansallisen sisältöjen historiallisia määrittäjiä ovat olleet humanistisiin aloihin kuuluneet tieteet ja erityisesti historiaa, kieltä ja kulttuuria tutkivat oppialat, joilla pitkälti vakiinnutettiin kansa- ja kansakunta-diskurssit. Från 1580-talet och ett knappt sekel framåt koloniserades stora delar av Mellansveriges och östra Norges skogsområden av svedjebrukande skogsfinnar. Dessa var främst savolaxare som tillhörde den östfinska kultursfären. Större sammanhängande områden där den skogsfinska kulturen gett en bestående karaktär på landskap, bebyggelse och ortnamn återfinns idag i Värmland och angränsande delar av Hedmark i Norge, stora delar av Bergslagen samt mellersta Norrland. Identifieringen av släktnamnen utgör en väsentlig del av grundforskningen för att få utökad kunskap om den skogsfinska migrationen, kolonisationen och bosättningen i Skandinavien. I östra Finland var det sedan tidig medeltid brukligt att använda särskilda släktnamn. Namnsystemet hade troligen uppstått i Savolax och Karelen under 1200-talet. Släktnamnens ursprung kan sannolikt knytas till system för markanvändning och erämarksbruk, och pekar på familje- och klantillhörighet. I Sverige och Norge var det skogsfinska släktnamnsbruket främst muntligt. Det var mera ovanligt att släktnamnen nedtecknades i de kamerala källorna, och oftast användes endast patronymikon i dessa källor. -
The Realm of the Forest Finns the Seven Croft Trail Is a 7.9 Km Long Hiking Trail in the Border Country Between Sweden and Norway
The Seven Croft Trail – a hike through Finnskogen in Hedmark and Värmland Price: SEK 20 torsby.se From the mid-1300s until 1809, what is now Finland formed the eastern half of the kingdom of Sweden. The Savolax region in central Finland was inhabited by forest Finns practising slash-and-burn cultivation techniques. In the 1500s and 1600s, many of them migrated to the forest landscape in mid Sweden and parts of eastern Norway. The reasons for this included overpopulation and a lack of forest areas to cultivate. The State encouraged this method of culti- vation and offered several years’ tax exemption to stimulate settle- ment. Today, Finnskogen (literally, “Forest of the Finns”) is the name of the area on both sides of the Swedish/Norwegian border where many of these Finns settled. Seven crofts, two countries; the realm of the forest Finns The Seven Croft Trail is a 7.9 km long hiking trail in the border country between Sweden and Norway. Lekvattnet in Torsby municipality and Varaldskogen in Kongsvinger municipality meet here. As the name implies, the trail leads past seven crofts, all with forest Finn origins. Here you can find everything from the ruins of Valli croft to Ritamäki, which is perhaps the best preserved forest Finn croft in the whole of Finnskogen. The route takes you through a cross-section of Finnskogen’s natural and cultural land- scapes. The trail generally follows old forest and wagon paths. There are two natural starting points for the Seven Croft Trail: On the Swedish side from the car park at Lomsen lake.
