Finnish Drama in Chinese Translation
FINNISH KULLERVO AND CHINESE KUNGFU Chapman Chen Project funded by Finnish Literature Information Center Hong Kong [email protected] Abstract Introduction: There are many important Finnish plays but, due to language barrier, Finnish drama is seldom exported, particularly to Hong Kong and China.. Objective: To find out differences in mentality between the Finnish and Chinese peoples by comparing the partially localized Chinese translation of Aleksis Kivi’s tragedy, Kullervo, with genuine Chinese martial arts literature. Methodology: 1. Chapman Chen has translated the Finnish classic, Kullervo, directly from Finnish into Chinese and published it in 2005. 2. In Chen’s Chinese translation, cultural markers are domesticated. On the other hand, values, characterization, plot, and rhythm remain unchanged. 3. According to Gideon Tory, the translator has to strike a golden mean between the norms of the source language and the target language. 4. Lau Tingci lists and explicates the essential components of martial arts drama. 5. According to Ehrnrooth’s “Mentality”, equality is the most important value in Finnish culture. Findings: i. Finland emphasizes independence while China emphasizes bilateral relationships. ii. The Finnish people loves freedom, but Gai Sizung argues that the Chinese people is slavish. iii. Finns are mature while many Chinese are, according to Sun Lung-kee (“The Deep Structure of Chinese Culture”; “The Deep Structure of Chinese Sexuality”), fixated at the oral and anal stages. iv. Finnish society highly values equality while Chinese interpersonal relationships are extremely complicated and hierachical. If Kullervo were a genuine Chinese kungfu story, the plot would be much more convoluted. Conclusion: The differences between Finnish and Chinese mentalities are so significant that partially localized or adapted Chinese translations of Finnish drama may still be able to introduce Finnish culture to the Chinese audience. -

There is no need to answer this, but perhaps we may assume that sooner or later someone would have written the books which would have formed the necessary building material for the national identity of the Finns. During the mid 1980s, when the 150th anniversary of the Kalevala was being celebrated in Finland, several international seminars were held and thousands of pages of research and articles were published. At that time some studies appeared in which the birth of the nation state was examined from a pan-European perspective. SMALL NATION STATES "The nation state - an independent political unit whose people share a common language and believe they have a common cultural heritage - is essentially a nineteenth-century invention, based on eighteenth-century philosophy, and which became a reality for the most part in either the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The circumstances in which this process took place were for the most part marked by the decline of great empires whose centralised sources of power and antiquated methods of administrations prevented an effective response to economic and social change, and better education, with all the aspirations for freedom of thought and political action that accompany such changes." Thus said Professor Michael Branch (University of London) at a conference on the literatures of the Uralic peoples held in Finland in the summer of 1991. -

Twenty Years of Old Literary Finnish – from Manual to Computer-Assisted Research1 Until fairly recently, research on old Finnish was either based on original texts, or on facsimiles, microfilms and similar sorts of copies in the so-called Old Fennica collection at the University Library of Helsinki. Since the early 1990s, KOTUS, i.e. the Research Institute for the Languages of Finland in Helsinki (http://www.kotus.fi/)2 has been transferring its materials to computer files, thereby making computer-assisted research possible. As of March 2003, the computerized corpora available for researchers other than the Institute's own staff comprise some 17 million Finnish words.3 The commands of the Institute’s Unix system can be used for processing data in the corpora, but several additional search programmes are also available for researchers; agrep is used for searching approximate character strings, kwic for creating KWIC indexes, and segrep for searching character strings in defined text structures. Today the Centre uses the Unix system exclusively, having recently discarded the Open VMS system that was previously used parallel to Unix. The Institute’s Finnish corpus is divided into four sub-groups; (1) Old Literary Finnish (1540—1810), approx. 2.8 million words. (2) 19th Century Finnish (1810—1900), approx. 4 million words.4 (3) Modern Finnish consists of dictionaries (a Dictionary of Modern Finnish from 1966, completed with a glossary of neologisms from the 50s, 60s and 70s, as well as a Basic Dictionary of Finnish in three parts, published in 1990, 1992 and 1994, respectively); a text bank of Finnish from the1990s, and a data base of some 100,000 word entries with an annual increase of approx. -

It nowadays publishes literature in the fields of ethnology and folkloristics, linguistics, literary research and cultural history. The first volume of the Studia Fennica series appeared in 1933. Since 1992, the series has been divided into three thematic subseries: Ethnologica, Folkloristica and Linguistica. Two additional subseries were formed in 2002, Historica and Litteraria. The subseries Anthropologica was formed in 2007. (HaF, 210) He saw, with a nameless feeling that he had never before experienced, this girl from a faraway and forgotten land; he had hardly surmised that even here love and beauty could wield their power over the human heart. In the passage above Scottish Jacob Keith, a commander in the Russian Army during the war 1741−1743 between Russia and Sweden (Finland), has met a young Finnish lady by the name of Eva Merthen for the first time. The story of the two lovers is told in the first Finnish historical novel,Hertiginnan af Finland (“The Duchess of Finland”, 1850=HaF), alongside the events of the war and political history. The passage dem- onstrates a keen interest in depicting Jacob’s mind, his inner feelings and thoughts as he suddenly falls in love. It uses the narrative mode of free indirect discourse (=FID), which carries traces of the discourse both of the character and the third person narrator as it depicts a character’s thoughts or speech. As Brian McHale (2005, 189) concisely defines it, “FID is ‘indirect’ because it conforms in person and tense to the template of indirect discourse, but ‘free’ because it is not subordinated grammatically to a verb of saying or thinking.” The proximity to a character’s free discourse is marked by, for instance, the use of idiomatic language and deictic adverbs pointing to the character’s own here and now (McHale 1978, 264−273). -

Bridges Finland Conference Proceedings Circular Forms in Aleksis Kivi’s Texts Tiina Katriina Kukkonen University of Jyväskylä, Finland [email protected] Abstract In this paper, I identify and analyse regular geometric forms that appear in nineteenth-century Finnish author Aleksis Kivi’s texts. His characters and his narrators exemplify these forms to the reader. The characters’ environments are geometrically described, mapped and constructed in Seven Brothers, and geometric figures also exist in several of Kivi’s novels, plays and poems. Circles are the most common of these figures. -
