  • The Other Tchaikowsky
The Other Tchaikowsky A biographical sketch of André Tchaikowsky David A. Ferré Cover painting: André Tchaikowsky courtesy of Milein Cosman (Photograph by Ken Grundy) About the cover The portrait of André Tchaikowsky at the keyboard was painted by Milein Cosman (Mrs. Hans Keller) in 1975. André had come to her home for a visit for the first time after growing a beard. She immediately suggested a portrait be made. It was completed in two hours, in a single sitting. When viewing the finished picture, André said "I'd love to look like that, but can it possibly be me?" When I sneaked a glance I saw that his eyes had narrowed and he held his mouth slightly open, as if ready to speak but unable to bring out the words. Finally, he managed a weak, "Would you say that again?" It was April 1985, and I had just arrived in London to enjoy six months of vacation and to fulfill an overdue promise to myself.

Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers.

Nota Bene: Canadian Undergraduate Journal of Musicology Volume 12 | Issue 1 Article 3 Magic and Enlightenment auf der Weisen: Der Stein der Weisen and Die Zauberflöte Mercer Greenwald Bard College Conservatory of Music Recommended Citation Greenwald, Mercer. “Magic and Enlightenment auf der Weisen: Der Stein der Weisen and Die Zaouberflöte.” Nota Bene: Canadian Undergraduate Journal of Musicology Vol. 12, no. 1 (2019): 30-45. https://doi.org/10.5206/notabene.v12i1.8145 Magic and Enlightenment auf der Weisen: Der Stein der Weisen and Die Zauberflöte Abstract This paper probes how the rational and the irrational interact in Enlightenment operatic plots, and explores the effect of this interaction on the Viennese public. To do this, I will investigate the fantastic worlds of two operas premiered by the same opera company, both with libretti written by Emanuel Schikaneder: Der Stein der Weisen oder Die Zauberinsel (1790) and Die Zauberflöte (1791). David J. Buch’s seminal book Magic Flutes and Enchanted Forests (2008) explores the intertextual threads of magical ideas in Der Stein der Weisen and Die Zauberflöte, that is, how librettists and composers translated and reprocessed magical themes. I will draw on Buch’s comparison to show how these intertextual connections can be read for their broad cultural resonances. In this paper, I will first establish the connections between Der Stein der Weisen and Die Zauberflöte in plot and in music. Then I will show how the later opera diverges from its predecessor and discuss how it manages to diminish the polarity of rationality and irrationality considered central to Enlightenment thinking. Ultimately, I argue, Die Zauberflöte facilitates its audience’s access to Enlightenment values by magical means.

  • Toccata Classics TOCC0147 Notes
TOCCATA Bernhard CLASSICS SEKLES Chamber Music Violin Sonata, Op. 44 Cello Sonata, Op. 28 Chaconne on an Eight-Bar March-Theme, Op. 38, for viola and piano ℗ Capriccio in Four Movements for piano trio Solomia Soroka, violin and viola Noreen Silver, cello Phillip Silver, piano INCLUDES FIRST RECORDING REDISCOVERING BERNHARD SEKLES by Phillip Silver he present-day obscurity of Bernhard Sekles illustrates how porous is contemporary knowledge of twentieth-century music: during his lifetime Sekles was prominent as teacher, administrator and composer alike. History has accorded him footnote status in two of these areas of endeavour: as an educator with an enviable list of students, and as the Director of the Hoch Conservatory in Frankfurt from 923 to 933. During that period he established an opera school, much expanded the area of early-childhood music-education and, most notoriously, in 928 established the world’s irst academic class in jazz studies, a decision which unleashed a storm of controversy and protest from nationalist and fascist quarters. But Sekles was also a composer, a very good one whose music is imbued with a considerable dose of the unexpected; it is traditional without being derivative. He had the unenviable position of spending the prime of his life in a nation irst rent by war and then enmeshed in a grotesque and ultimately suicidal battle between the warring political ideologies that paved the way for the Nazi take-over of 933. he banning of his music by the Nazis and its subsequent inability to re-establish itself in the repertoire has obscured the fact that, dating back to at least 99, the integration of jazz elements in his works marks him as one of the irst European composers to use this emerging art-form within a formal classical structure.
