Ani Kokobobo is assistant professor and director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Kansas where she teaches Russian literature and culture. She has published Russian Writers and the Fin de Siècle: The Twilight of Realism (Cambridge University Press, 2015), Russian Grotesque Realism: The Great Reforms and the Gentry Decline (Ohio State University Press, 2017), and Beyond Moscow: Reading Russia’s Regional Identities and Initiatives (Routledge, 2017). Author Ismail Kadare won the inaugural Man Booker International Prize in 2005; in 2009 he received the Premio Príncipe de Asturias de las Letras, Spain’s most prestigious literary award; and in 2015 he won the Jerusalem Prize. In Kadare’s Essays on World Literature—originally written in Albanian between 1985 and 2006—he dedicates one essay each to Aeschylus, Dante, and Shakespeare, making connections between these Western texts and the state and history of his homeland, Albania. His novel The Traitor’s Niche was nominated for the Man Booker International. He is also the author of A Girl in Exile: Requiem for Linda B. (2018). ARABIC: Al-Koni, Ibrahim. The Fetishists: The Tuareg Epic. Translated by William M. HutChins. Austin: University of Texas Press, 2018. 454 pp. Paper. $30.00. ISBN: 978-1-4773-1789-1. In this epic novel, Ibrahim al-Koni blends Tuareg folklore and history with intense descriptions of daily life in the desert and depicts the clash between the Tuareg and traditional African civilizations. He describes the impact on communities when individuals struggle between a desire for material well-being and a need for spiritual meaning. Al-Koni, a native of Libya, studied comparative literature at the Maxim Gorky Literature Institute in Moscow and later worked as a journalist in Moscow and Warsaw. A prolific Arabic novelist, he has published more than eighty books which have been translated into thirty-five languages. In 2015 he was shortlisted for the Man-Booker International Prize. The translator, William M. Hutchins, received a Ph.D. in Near Eastern languages from the University of Chicago and is a professor at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. He translated the Cairo Trilogy by Nobel Prize-winner Naguib Mahfouz, as well as several novels by al-Koni. University of Arkansas Press. 2018. 86 pp. Paper. $17.95. ISBN 978-1-68226-050- 0. Hassan Najmi, one of Morocco’s leading poets, has written two novels and ten poetry collections. He also translates several poets into Arabic, including Giuseppe Ungaretti, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen, Philippe Jaccottet, Yannis Ritsos, and Anna Akhmatova. The Blueness of the Evening is a selection Hassan Najmi’s poems, originally written in free verse in Arabic. Translator Mbarek Sryfi is a Lecturer in Foreign Languages at the University of Pennsylvania (since 2004). He is also a PhD candidate in the Near Eastern Language and Civilizations Department at the University of Pennsylvania. He translated The Elusive Fox by Muhammad Zafzaf (Syracuse University Press, 2016) and Monarch of the Square: An Anthology of Short Stories by Muhammad Zafzaf (Syracuse University Press, 2014). His translations have also appeared in World Literature Today and The Massachusetts Review, among others. Eric Sellin is professor emeritus at Tulane University. His translations have appeared in New Directions, The Heinemann Book of African Women’s Poetry, and The Literary Review. Sryfi and Sellin both translated Abdelfattah Kilito’s Arabs and the Art of Storytelling: A Strange Familiarity (Syracuse University Press, 2014) from French. The book was a finalist for the 2015 French-American Foundation Translation Prize. Naqqash, Samir. Tenants and Cobwebs. Translation by Sadok Masliyah. Samir Naqqash (1938-2004) was a Jewish-Iraqi novelist, short-story writer, and playwright who emigrated with his family from Iraq at the age of thirteen. Naqqash wrote exclusively in Arabic despite living most of his life in Israel. In 2004 he received the Israeli Prime Ministerial Award for Arabic Fiction. Tenants and Cobwebs narrates the lives of characters from an ancient Iraqi-Jewish family living during the tumult of 1940s Muslim Baghdad. Although the family appears to live peacefully with their Muslim neighbors, Naqqash gives voice to the deepening tensions between the two groups by his innovative

    Countering the Sectarian Metanarrative: Iraqi Literary Response to the US Occupation Chad Day Truslow Waynesboro, Virginia B.A. in International Relations & History, Virginia Military Institute, 2008 M.A. in Business Administration, Liberty University, 2014 A Thesis presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Master of Arts Department of Middle Eastern and South Asian Languages and Cultures University of Virginia December, 2019 1 Abstract Sectarian conflict is a commonly understood concept that has largely shaped US foreign policy approach to the region throughout the modern Middle East. As a result of the conflict between Shia and Sunni militias in Iraq and the nature of Iraqi politics since 2003, many experts have accepted sectarianism as an enduring phenomenon in Iraq and use it as a foundation to understand Iraqi society. This paper problematizes the accepted narrative regarding the relevance of sectarian identity and demonstrates the fallacy of approaching Iraq through an exclusively “sectarian lens” in future foreign policy. This paper begins by exploring the role of the Iraqi intellectuals in the twentieth century and how political ideologies influenced and replaced traditional forms of identity. The paper then examines the common themes used by mid-twentieth century Iraqi literati to promote national unity and a sense of Iraqi identity that championed the nation’s heterogeneity. The paper then surveys the Iraqi literary response to the 2003 invasion in order to explain how some of the most popular Iraqi writers represent sectarianism in their works. The literary response to the US invasion and occupation provides a counter- narrative to western viewpoints and reveals the reality of the war from the Iraqi perspective.

One of Wilder's nastiest, most cynical efforts, who can say he wasn't actually soft-pedalling? He certainly thought it was the best film he'd ever made. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Tom Shadyac, 1994) A goofy detective turns town upside-down in search of a missing dolphin - any old plot would have done for oven-ready megastar Jim Carrey. A ski-jump hairdo, a zillion impersonations, making his bum "talk" - Ace Ventura showcases Jim Carrey's near-rapturous gifts for physical comedy long before he became encumbered by notions of serious acting. An Actor's Revenge (Kon Ichikawa, 1963) Prolific Japanese director Ichikawa scored a bulls-eye with this beautifully stylized potboiler that took its cues from traditional Kabuki theatre. It's all ballasted by a terrific double performance from Kazuo Hasegawa both as the female-impersonator who has sworn vengeance for the death of his parents, and the raucous thief who helps him. The Addiction (Abel Ferrara, 1995) Ferrara's comic-horror vision of modern urban vampires is an underrated masterpiece, full- throatedly bizarre and offensive. The vampire takes blood from the innocent mortal and creates another vampire, condemned to an eternity of addiction and despair. Ferrara's mob movie The Funeral, released at the same time, had a similar vision of violence and humiliation.

The absolute non-seriousness that characterized grotesque realism became a successful and relatively safe way to talk about the absurdities and the failures of the communist system. This modality, however, was not exclusive to the communist era but stretched back to the Austro-Hungarian era and forward into the Postcommunist times.
