For food, clothing, weapons, tools, and fuel, they rely on the fish they catch and the caribou, seals, whales, and walruses they hunt. In winter, the Inuit live in houses made of sod, wood, and stone, and in summer, they use tents made of animal skins. Igloos, shelters made of blocks of snow, are used only when the Inuit go on hunts and then only rarely. Kayaks and dog sleds are their means of transportation. Much of the Inuit reli- gion revolves around the sea and animals. The Inuit are noted for their carvings in soapstone, ivory, and bone, which often use characters from their religious lore. Anasazi (Pueblo Builders and Cliff Dwellers) By about 2,000 years ago, the Anasazi had settled in what is known today as the four corners area of the Southwest, that is, where Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah meet. Originally hunters and gatherers, the Anasazi turned to farming by around 1000 CE. Their crops were primarily maize (corn), beans, and squash. The first houses of the Anasazi were pithouses constructed below ground. By 1100 CE, however, the Anasazi were building cliff dwellings, multistoried stone apartment buildings with many rooms, set into mountainsides. By the late 1200s, for unknown reasons, the Anasazi began to abandon their cliff dwellings. Possible reasons include drought, disease, pressure from invading groups like the Apache, and internal dissension among villagers. Archaeologists have found no proof of any of these. By the mid-1500s, when the Spanish arrived in the Southwest, there was no trace of the cliff dwellers. In their place were descendants who lived in villages of adobe houses. These houses were built with a type of sun-dried brick made from clay. Both the clay and the bricks themselves are called adobe. The Spanish called these houses pueblos, and applied the name to the villagers as well; hence, the Acoma, Zuni, and Hopi became known as the Pueblo Indians. Mound Builders There are three different cultures that prospered at three different times that are classified as Mound Builders: the Adena (1000 BCE–200 CE), the Hopewell (100 BCE–700 CE), and Mississippian (500 CE–1600 CE). There are thousands of their mounds throughout the eastern part of the United States. The mounds are just that—huge, high domes of dirt or long, narrow mounds of dirt, like ribbons, that wind across the landscape in twists and turns. Building such huge structures required thousands of workers and some form of government to organ- ize and direct them. Hopewell Mound ceremonial site The Adena culture developed in the Ohio River Valley and spread through what are now the states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky. The Adenans may have been farmers, or they may simply have harvested wild grains. Much of what we know of the Adenans is based on archaeological analysis of their mounds. Archaeologists speculate that the mounds were built as graves and also as sites for religious observances. There are no traces of the Adenans after about 200 CE, and archaeologists do not know what happened to them. History and Geography: American 153 CK_3_TH_HG_P146_194.QXD 4/11/05 10:47 AM Page 154 I. The Earliest Americans The Hopewell culture also developed in the Ohio River Valley and spread from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico and west to the Mississippi River. In the east, the culture penetrated as far as the western slopes of the Appalachians. The largest mound that has been found is 40 feet high and 100 feet in diameter. The Hopewellians were hunters and fishers as well as farmers, raising corn, beans, and squash. Some of the people were also traders; Hopewellian trade goods have been found in distant parts of the continent, and trade goods from as far away as the Rockies have been found among Hopewellian artifacts. Archaeologists specu- late that the Hopewellian trade network stretched from the Rockies to the Atlantic, and from the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico. The Hopewell culture began to decline sometime between 500 CE and 700 CE. The Mississippian culture did not penetrate quite as far north, west, or east as the Hopewell Mound Builders, but it was a more complex society. In addition to burial mounds, the Mississippians built city-states surrounded by villages and farms. Each city included temple mounds, homes, workshops, and marketplaces. While the northern city-states died out sometime in the 1500s, the southern cen- ters were still functioning in the 1600s when the French and Spanish explored the Gulf coast area. European diseases decimated the population of these people. The Cherokee and Choctaw are two cultures that are descended from the last Mound Builders. B. Native Americans Background Scholars differ on how to group culture regions. Recent research has resulted in the difference between the Sequence grouping of Native American cultures and how they are presented here. Most anthropologists have classified Native American peoples into culture regions in order to study and understand them, in the same way that anthropol- ogists study members of other ethnic groups, such as the Serbs in the former Yugoslavia or the Zulu people in the Republic of South Africa. A culture region is a geographic area in which different groups have adapted to their physical surroundings in similar ways. Many of the variables that must be considered can be given support only through certain fundamental assumptions based upon observations of related extant phenomena. Many of these observations are contained in the ethnographic record of aboriginal cultures of the world whose activities and subsistence patterns are more closely related to the prehistoric cultures of a particular area. In other instances, support can be gathered from observations of current manual labor related to earth moving since the prehistoric constructions were accomplished manually by a human labor force. The material herein will present alternative ways of arriving at the represented phenomena. One need only look at sites such as the Valley of the Kings and the great pyramids of Egypt, Teotihuacan, La Venta and Chichen Itza in Mexico, the Cahokia mound group in Illinois, and other such sites to realize that considerable time, effort and organization were required.

I think the case can be made that Monks Mound and the entire Alayout of this ancient metropolis in the H American Bottom near East St. Louis was a facsimile or model of Cahokia’s place in the cosmos, similar to the Black Hills as a “mirror or heaven” or the heart of all that is.” These are good metaphors to describe Cahokia’s center in the three-layer cake concept of the universe—the Underworld, the Earth, and the Sky. Cahokia by the 12th century B.C.E., was the place for people to connect with the spirits of this sacred sphere. In this article I will identify the sacred elements that made this place special to local and non-local populations and the role of the Birdman chiefs, priests, and shamans to interpret this unique place as a center in a larger world. Additionally, I identify the similarities of Cahokia as a a sacred place to other societies at different times and places. My fascination with Cahokia Mounds developed over a period of time with many visits from the early 1970s to the present. Briefly, Cahokia was the largest America city north of Mexico before the coming of the Europeans in the 15th cen- tury. It is believed that Cahokia was a political, religious, and economic center for perhaps as many as 500,000 Indians in the Mississippi Valley. It was a planned city with everything the world and in all religions, but the focus here is on the laid out on the cardinal points on the compass, Monks Cahokia Mounds in southern Illinois and cross culture Mound, the largest mound at the center, served as the official comparisons, Cahokia’s unique story includes the cruciform residence of the Great Sun god or Birdman deity.

    1540 Coronado’s Conquest of the Pueblo Indians Word of the discovery of the first of the Seven Cities reached the Viceroy of New Spain, Antonio de Mendoza, in Mexico. He decided to conquer the pueblo for Spain. He asked Francisco de Coronado to be the leader. Coronado reached the Zuni Pueblo in 1540. He and his men soon found out that this pueblo did not have the riches that they hoped to find. They took what they could from the Zuni. They then claimed this pueblo Southern Mehodist University Press and 80 more for Spain. Coronado traveled from Spanish territory in Mexico to the southwestern United States in search of riches. He found none but claimed the area for Spain. 1598 Spanish Treatment of Pueblo Indians Indians had never had before. Smallpox swept through The Spaniards lived among the Pueblo peoples. At first the pueblos killing hundreds of people. Sometimes they depended on the food that was grown in the whole villages were wiped out. Pueblo peoples’ gardens. This sometimes left the Pueblo Indians without enough to eat. Many Pueblo peoples were forced to become servants in Spanish homes. Sometimes the Spaniards would cut off one foot of young adult males as a way to control them. The Spanish priests tried to convert the Pueblo peoples to Christianity. They pressured the Pueblo Indians by hanging, whipping, or putting them in prison. Most Pueblo people did not want to be Christians. They wanted to worship in their own traditions. The Spaniards also brought smallpox to the pueblo. This very serious disease causes a rash and high fever and spreads easily.

Pueblo Bonito is unquestionably the finest extant example of that phase of southwestern history known to archeologists as Pueblo III— the period during which small, isolated villages were drawn together into large, complex communities. After a time these communities began to disintegrate ; to separate into lesser groups that spread far and wide in search of more fertile fields and freedom from the attacks of nomadic enemies. Then came, in 1540, Coronado and his fellow adventurers to initiate the Spanish conquest of the Southwest ; to bring about still further disintegration of the peaceful Pueblo tribes and their unique social organization. This Spanish-dominated phase of Pueblo history, from 1540 to the present, is commonly designated Pueblo V.

    Texas Indians CH 4 TEXAS HISTORY First Texans Native Americans adapted to and used their environment to meet their needs. Plains Indians People who move from place to place with the seasons are nomads. The main advantage of teepees was their mobility. Plains Indians The Apaches were able to attack both the Spanish and other Indian groups because of their skilled use of horses. Apaches used their skill at riding horses to assert dominance. Plains Indians The Comanche became wealthy as skilled buffalo hunters. Hunters used buffalo hides for clothing and shelter and ate the meat. All Plains Indians lived off the buffalo. Plains Indians The Comanche first entered Texas from the Great Plains. The Comanche later drove the Apache into the Mountains and Basins region of West Texas and into New Mexico. Plains Indians The Lipan and Mescalero were subgroups of the Apaches. Southeastern Indians The Caddos were a matrilineal society, which meant they traced their families through the mother’s side. Caddos farmed and practiced crop rotation to prevent the soil from wearing out. Southeastern Indians Farming changed Native American culture by creating more complex, permanent societies. Western Gulf Indians Gulf Coast Indians were different from Plains Indians because they were able to eat seafood from the Gulf, including oysters, clams, turtles and fish. Western Gulf Indians The Karankawa and Coahuiltecan were both were nomads along the Gulf Coast. They didn’t farm because they lived in a dry area. Pueblo Indians The Pueblo were from the Mountains and Basins region and built adobe homes of mud and straw.
