To date, the PAC has: established national targets for conservation and management; collated existing and new data on species and habitats; identified current protected area boundaries; and determined how much of Fiji's biodiversity is currently protected through terrestrial and marine gap analyses. -

It is rare for a scientist to be renowned in both indigenous and western cultures. Throughout the islands of Polynesia and Southeast Asia, Dr. Paul Alan Cox is known as “Nafanua.” “Nafanua” is one of the highest chief titles of Samoa, conferred upon Cox in 1989 by the DEGREES AND AWARDS: Samoan people for his diligence and work in rain forest preservation. TEENA BROWN PULU Geopolitical Storymaking About Tonga and Fiji: How media fooled people to believe Ma’afu wanted Lau Abstract Just when Tongan Democratic Party leader ‘Akilisi Pohiva stumped the public by saying he admired Fiji’s Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama because “he has been able to make things happen and take development to the people,” the Government of Tonga’s Minister for Lands, Lord Ma’afu, came right out of the blue and trumped him (Tonga Daily News, 2014a, 2014b). Ma’afu topped Pohiva at causing public bamboozlement. By this, Pohiva was the progenitor of Tonga’s thirty year old pro-democracy movement. Why would he over romanticise about the former military commodore Frank Bainimarama, the hard-line originator of Fiji’s third coup to take place in a period of twenty eight years? Pohiva’s swinging politics from democracy in Tonga to an overthrow of democracy in Fiji baffled readers (Naidu, 2014; Graue, 2014). But Ma’afu took centre stage as the show stopper. Momentarily, people were gobsmacked and did not know what to make of him. Was Tonga’s Minister for Lands and Survey who was a senior noble in the Tu’ivakano cabinet courting mischief or dead serious? Fiji’s permanent secretary for foreign affairs Amena Yauvoli was certain, we “would just have to wait for the Tongan government’s proposal” (Tonga Daily News, 2014a). But as Tongan journalist Kalafi Moala put it, “they will be waiting for a very long time” on that geopolitical front (Moala, 2014). Problems Discussed Tuamotuan is a Polynesian language that has the following sixteen 49 50 Hiroshi Kum segmental phonemes : /p, t, k, '(glottal stop); f, h, v; m, n, g (voiced velar nasal); r; e, a, u, o/ (v. •˜ 3) In spite of the general tendency among Polynesian languages toward fewer phonemes, it is considered that Tuamotuan ADDED a glottal stop / '/ to its inventory of consonant phonemes relatively recently. (v. •˜ 4) The purpose of this paper is, first of all, to prove this point. The second purpose of this paper is to point out the fact that there are two different types of glottal stop in Tuamotuan : a SYSTEMATIC GLOTTAL STOP and a sporadic INTRUSIVE GLOTTAL STOP. (v. •˜ 6) The latter type of glottal stop, used utterance-initially in Tuamotuan, is also non-phonemically used in English and presumably in many other languages in the same or a similar environment. Syllabic structures of Tuamotuan are V, CV, VV, CVV, VVV and CVVV. Being a consonant, glottal stop usually occurs within these syllabic struc- tures. Glottal stop, however, also occurs utterance-finally in exclamations. This type of glottal stop is called EXTRA-SYSTEMATIC GLOTTAL STOP in this paper.
