White Precious Drops, Oppland Arbeiderblad, October 2010, Arne Noess, Norway Although autumn is often synonymous with red wines, we shall now take a quick trip to the "wine paradise" Alsace and test a bunch of white wines, and ﬁrst of all the grape I most appreciates from this area: Riesling. All of Alsace is very well adapted to wine tourism with its many small picturesque villages and its own "wine routes". Routes suitable for the very best to do by bike. Many of the roads is actually quite narrow. Our little tour is concentrated in a few kilometers south of Strasbourg and down to Colmar. Here is a series of small towns and cities with character. From Blienschwiller through Riquewihr, Hunawihr and Kaysersberg to RIBEAUVILLE. In addition to excellent wineries in a row, there are many great restaurants with stars in the Michelin guide. Along our route you can ﬁnd, among other things, Maximilien in Zellenberg, Table du Gourmet in Riquewihr and Chambard in Kaysersberg. Trimbach Riesling 2008 – dice 6 Trimbach Riesling 2008 is a volume seller, understandably enough. Scores the top of everything. Beautiful mineral tones and beautiful blend of green apple, some pear and yellow fruits (citrus). Of course, top balance, good "tensioned" and "crispy" enough for my taste. Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Trinmbach Émile 2004 – dice 6 We take the very best for last. It was served at President Obama's presentation of the Peace Prize, and elected the Swedish king when his daughter married. Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Trinmbach Émile 2004 is a king. Plan de Kaysersberg City map Stadtplan HISTORY / GESCHICHTE Kaysersberg was first mentionned in 1227, the year in which Henry VII, son of Frederick of Hohenstaufen bought the castle, strategic advantage, in the aim to control the valley. In 1293, thanks to King Adolphe of Nassau Kaysersberg become an Imperial Town. The ci- ty’s economic vocation became apparent. Located at the entrance to the Weiss valley which linked Upper Alsace to Lorraine via the Bonhomme pass, the town was granted numerous privileges. Apart from trade and craft industries, Kaysersberg exported its wines across the Rhine. The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) stopped its eco- nomic expansion. The conflict left the town exhausted. Until the French Revolution, the city gradually increased its population and restored its previous activities. INFORMATIONS PRATIQUES The 19th century was marked by the development of a major textile industry. Etappe 5: Ribeauvillé – Hunawihr – Riquewihr – Turckheim – (Munster –) (Colmar –) Rouffach (38 km / 240 – 307 – 281 – 358 – 219 – 324 – 256 – 318 – 204 m) Schwierigkeitsgrad: max. Steigung: 12,7 %, Höhenmeter: 450 Anschlussetappen: Ribeauvillé: 4, 10 / Rouffach: 6 Diese Etappe führt (i.d.R. auf ausgeschilderten Radwegen) durch Weinberge am Fuß der Vogesen. In der rheinischen Tiefebene schließen weite Mais- und Getreidefelder an. In den Weinbergen ist die Fahrtstrecke recht hügelig, die Feldwege sind asphaltiert, aber Rinnen zur Ableitung des Regenwassers ver- laufen quer zur Fahrtrichtung. Die Ausfahrt aus Ribeauvillé (s. Bergheim Etappe 4) erfolgt über die Grand’ D416 Rue, von der nach dem Rathaus in Ribeauvillé die Rue Klobb nach links abgebo- gen wird. Weiter geht’s über die Riquewihr anschließende Rue de la Marne D1 und von dieser nach Überquerung der Rue du 3 Décembre in die Rue N415 D4 N83 du Vignobel, die schließlich in einen asphaltierten Feldweg über- Orbey D10 geht. Kurz hinter Ribeauvillé wurde in Folge der Restaurierung einer D11 N415 alten Trockenmauer ein schattiger Turckheim Colmar Rastplatz angelegt, der auch ein guter Aussichtspunkt ist.
