The Youth of Goethe By Peter Hume Brown PREFACE "GENERALLY speaking," Goethe has himself said, "the most important period in the life of an individual is that of his development—the period which, in my case, breaks off with the detailed narrative of Dichtung und Wahrheit." In reality, as we know, there is no complete breach at any point in the lives of either nations or individuals. But if in the life of Goethe we are to fix upon a dividing point, it is his departure from Frankfort and his permanent settlement in Weimar in his twenty-seventh year. Considered externally, that change of his surroundings is the most obvious event in his career, and for the world at large marks its division into two well-defined periods. In relation to his inner development his removal from Frankfort to Weimar may also be regarded as the most important fact in his life. From the date of his settlement in Weimar he was subjected to influences which equally affected his character and his genius; had he continued to make his home in Frankfort, it is probable that, both as man and[Pg xiv] literary artist, he would have developed characteristics essentially different from those by which the world knows him. There were later experiences— notably his Italian journey and his intercourse with Schiller—which profoundly influenced him, but none of these experiences penetrated his being so permanently as the atmosphere of Weimar, which he daily breathed for more than half a century. As Goethe himself has said, the first twenty-six years of his life are essentially the period of his "development." During that period we see him as he came from Nature's hand. -

3 2. Der Sturm und Drang als literarische Epoche 2.1 Sturm und Drang zwischen Aufklärung und Klassik ? Noch in der Spätphase der europäischen Aufklärung entwickelte sich in Deutschland eine literarische Epoche, die später nach dem gleichnamigen Drama von Klinger Sturm und Drang (1776) benannt werden sollte. Der Sturm und Drang war nicht wie andere eine gesamteuropäische Epoche, sondern er war eingebunden in die besondere Entwicklung der deutschen Literatur und Gesellschaft. Ebenfalls hatte der Sturm und Drang keine Entsprechung in der Musik, der Malerei oder auch der Architektur. Gerade die Musik und die Architektur waren in der Zeit des aufgeklärten Absolutismus höfische Künste, und standen somit im Gegensatz zum Sturm und Drang, der ganz in der Tradition der Aufklärer, ebenfalls auf die Emanzipierung des Bürgertums zielte. Anders als in der Aufklärung wird im Sturm und Drang allerdings die Individualität neben die Vernunft gestellt. Während die Aufklärer, wie z.B. Lessing, versuchten bürgerliche Moralvorstellungen über die Bühne zu verbreiten und so das Publikum, vor allem natürlich das bürgerliche Publikum, im Sinne der Fähigkeit zur Selbstfindung und zur Stärkung des Selbstbewusstseins zu erziehen, rückte im Sturm und Drang die Individualität, beziehungsweise das Gefühl, gleichberechtigt neben die Vernunft. Gefühle wie Kraft, Stärke, Liebe, Hass, Verzweiflung wurden als Einheit von Geist, Seele und Leib gesehen. Sie stehen nicht in Opposition zu Verstand und Vernunft, sondern unterstützen diese produktiv. In diesem Sinne bewahrt der Sturm und Drang eine gewisse Kontinuität zur Aufklärung, während gleichzeitig eine Diskontinuität diese Phase kennzeichnet. Ganz anders ist das Verhältnis des Sturm und Drang zur Klassik. Gerade durch die beiden prägenden Figuren der Weimarer Klassik Goethe und Schiller, die ja auch den Sturm und Drang entscheidend beeinflussten, wurde dieser oft als „Vorklassik“ oder gar als „unreifere“ Form der Klassik gesehen. -

Ehrhard Bahr and Walter K. Stewart North American Dissertations 1886-2008: One Hundred Twelve Years of Goethe Research in North America The 2009 compilation of North American Goethe Dissertations brings together all of the citations from the original 1982 bibliography (Goethe Yearbook 1 [1982]: pp. 177-196) and the subsequent supplements in Vol. 5 (1990), pp. 293-303 and Vol. 10 (2001) 263-275 into a single list that now incorporates dissertations concening Goethe from 1886 to 2008. The compilation updates, reformats, re-numbers, and corrects previous errors and interpolates new and missing citations in order to present the most complete bibliography possible. As in previous supplements, we have documented the volume and page numbers primarily through Dissertation Abstracts International (DAI). Over the last ten years many citations from older sources have been incorporated into this one resource. Still, not all citations are available through DAI or the on-line licensed site at University Microfilms International (www.lib.umi.com/dissertations) but may be found through other available resources. Our study has revealed a continuing trend among doctoral dissertations on Goethe: many do not focus on Goethe exclusively but rather include him as an important secondary support. As a result, we have included dissertations that at first glance do not appear to bear on Goethe at all; yet the abstracts clearly show that they deal with the author. For our purposes, if Goethe serves as a formative influence on the dissertation subject matter, or if his thought and works are related and discussed substantively, we have listed the dissertation. Some dissertations, for example, devote a chapter to him, his thinking, or his works. -
