E-mail: [email protected] The main phytogeographic regions within the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula are delimited on the basis of analysis of recent literature on geology, geomorphology and climatology of the region, as well as numerous recent literature information on phytogeography, flora and vegetation. The following six phytogeographic regions (at the rank of floristic province) are distinguished and outlined within eastern Indochina: Sikang-Yunnan Province, South Chinese Province, North Indochinese Province, Central Annamese Province, South Annamese Province and South Indochinese Province. Short descriptions of these floristic units are given along with analysis of their floristic relationships. Special floristic analysis and consideration are given to the Orchidaceae as the largest well-studied representative of the Indochinese flora. 1. Background The Socialist Republic of Vietnam, comprising the largest area in the eastern part of the Indochinese Peninsula, is situated along the southeastern margin of the Peninsula. -
Epilist 1.0: a Global Checklist of Vascular Epiphytes

However, to date, there is no comprehensive list of vas- cular epiphyte species. Here, we present EpiList 1.0, the first global list of vascular epiphytes based on standardized definitions and taxonomy. We include obligate epiphytes, facultative epiphytes, and hemiepiphytes, as the latter share the vulnerable epiphytic stage as juveniles. Based on 978 references, the checklist includes >31,000 species of 79 plant families. Species names were standardized against World Flora Online for seed plants and against the World Ferns database for lycophytes and ferns. In cases of species missing from these databases, we used other databases (mostly World Checklist of Selected Plant Families). For all species, author names and IDs for World Flora Online entries are provided to facilitate the alignment with other plant databases, and to avoid ambiguities. EpiList 1.0 will be a rich source for synthetic studies in ecology, biogeography, and evolutionary biology as it offers, for the first time, a species‐level overview over all currently known vascular epiphytes. At the same time, the list represents work in progress: species descriptions of epiphytic taxa are ongoing and published life form information in floristic inventories and trait and distribution databases is often incomplete and sometimes evenwrong. -
Orchids of Suspa-Kshamawoti, Dolakha -An Annotated Checklist

Ghimire1 Suspa-Kshamawoti area of Dolakha district covers diverse vegetation types and harbors many interesting species of orchids. This paper documents 69 species of orchids covering 33 genera based on repeated field surveys and herbarium collections. Of them, 50 species are epiphytic (including lithophytes) and 19 species are terrestrial. Information regarding habit and habitat, phenology, host species and elevational range of distribution of each species are provided in the checklist. Abstract A comprehensive account on Orchid diversity of the state of Maharashtra has been made on the basis of field and herbarium studies. The present study revealed the occurrence of 122 taxa (119 species and 3 varieties) belonging to 36 genera from the State, out of which 32% (37 species and 2 varieties) are endemic to India. Special efforts have been made to find out distribution of endemic species and their conservation status. Besides this ecology, habitat and phyto-geographical affinities of the orchids occurring within the state of Maharashtra are also discussed. Résumé Révision des orchidées de Maharashtra, Inde – Un bilan détaillé de la diversité en orchidées de l’État de Maharashtra a été réalisé sur la base d'études menées sur le terrain et dans les herbiers. L'étude a révélé la présence dans cet État de 122 taxons (119 espèces et 3 variétés) réparties en 36 genres, dont 32% (37 espèces et 2 variétés) sont endémiques de l'Inde. Un effort particulier a permis de préciser la distribution géographique des espèces endémiques et leur statut de conservation. We fell short of one issue, nonetheless, it is indeed encouraging that we are able to abide by the chosen dates of the equinoxes/solstices and are able to bring out the issues. Thanks to all those who continue to contribute articles – howsoever brief or lengthy – most every piece is interesting and illuminative. As always Dr Sastry educates us with his erudite write up on the inter relationships of the orchids and our ecosystem. Ravee Bhat elucidates us with the importance of habitat and preserving the microcosm of one of the terrestrial orchids which enchants the select group of orchid enthusiasts every year around this time of the year who all visited the nearby Turahalli forest to watch Habenaria roxburghii in its natural habitat. Habitat again – is evident from the brief sojourn of Savitha Suresh who engages us with her holiday at Kumarakom where she found just this one interesting plant she collected – the Brittle Tiger Orchid. Dr Chandan elaborates on the sequence of events required to successfully grow the very uncommon Doll Orchid – Habenaria crinifera. An Updated Checklist of the Orchids of Maharashtra, India

JAYANTHI Botanical Survey of India, Western Regional Centre, Pune – 411 001, Maharashtra, India *Corresponding author’s email: [email protected] ABSTRACT. A checklist of the Orchidaceae of Maharashtra is presented based on herbarium collections and recent botanical explorations. This list comprises 32 genera with 106 taxa. The best represented genus is Habenaria with 23 species, followed by Dendrobium with eleven, Eulophia and Oberonia with seven and Peristylus with six. In Maharashtra, the total endemic orchid species are 41 spread over in 13 genera. Of these 30 species, six species are endemic to Peninsular India and five species are endemic to India. Generally orchids are found in the nine major habitats in Maharashtra of which the best representation was observed in the semi-evergreen forests (55 species) followed by moist deciduous forests (48 species), high altitude rocky plateaus (26 species) and dry deciduous forests (25 species).
