LLT 180 Lecture 22 1 Today we're gonna pick up with Gottfried von Strassburg. As most of you already know, and it's been alleged and I readily admit, that I'm an occasional attention slut. Obviously, otherwise, I wouldn't permit it to be recorded for TV. And, you know, if you pick up your Standard today, it always surprises me -- actually, if you live in Springfield, you might have met me before without realizing it. I like to cook and a colleague in the department -- his wife's an editor for the Springfield paper and she also writes a weekly column for the "Home" section. And so he and I were talking about pans one day and I was, you know, saying, "Well," you know, "so many people fail to cook because they don't have the perfect pan." And she was wanting to write an article about pans. She'd been trying to convince him to buy better pans. And so she said, "Hey, would you pose for a picture with pans? I'm writing this article." And so I said, "Oh, what the heck." And so she came over and took this photo. And a couple of weeks later, I opened Sunday morning's paper -- 'cause I knew it was gonna be in that week -- and went over to the "Home" section. And there was this color photo, about this big, and I went, "Oh, crap," you know. So whatever. Gottfried. Again, as they tell you here, we don't know much about these people, and this is really about love. -

1 Introduction

At what stage in their lives was the decision taken that they should enter the clergy, and who made this decision? Did they continue to maintain ties with their families, and if so, how? How were they trained for their roles in the Church? Attempting to answer these questions sheds light on central aspects of western European society: family networks, education, administration, pastoral care and ecclesiastical institutions. Unlike monks and nuns, however, whose career patterns and family background have attracted considerable attention,1 the clergy of the period from 800 to 1200 have suffered neglect, but unjustly so, on several counts: they were numerous, and their lives and activities were woven into those of the laity of the societies in which they lived. Moreover, though the majority had significance only as part of a larger whole, a sizeable minority were doers and thinkers, many at the forefront of the whole range of cultural developments. Bruce 00 Sunt altera nobis sidera, sunt orbes alii: Imagining Subterranean Peoples and Places in Medieval Latin 00 Literature 105 118 Owing to the enduring popularity of Jules Verne’s science fiction story Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), modern readers have taken for granted a hollow, habitable 2020 core beneath the earth’s crust as a time-honored, though scientifically implausible, setting for speculative fiction.1 Verne’s fantastic tale of Professor Otto Lidenbrock’s descent into the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull and his perilous adventures under- ground featuring forests of giant mushrooms and prehistoric monsters remains the most widely read work of nineteenth-century “subterranean fiction.” In 1926, the story was reprinted in a three-part serial in the widely-read American science fiction maga- zine Amazing Stories (Fig. 1). Throughout the twentieth century, it spawned a host of imitators, from Edgar Rice Burrough’s Pellucidar series (1914‒1963) to C. S. Lewis’ Narnian chronicle The Silver Chair (1953), as well as a successful 1959 film adaptation starring James Mason and Pat Boone. The notion that the earth was both hollow and habitable predated Jules Verne by at least two centuries. In 1665, the German Jesuit and polymath Athanasius Kircher (1602‒1680) published his lavishly illustrated, two-volume Mundus subterraneus, an 800‒page potpourri of scientific knowledge and folkloric accretion about the geography and ecology of subterranean realms, with long digressions on the existence of under- world megafauna, like giants and dragons, and some first-rate speculation on the site of lost Atlantis.2 Like the hero of Verne’s story, Kircher was intrigued by the possibility that volcanoes provided gateways to the lightless world below. -

How does the court depicted by Béroul differ from that of Walter Map? In 12th century Western Europe, an extensive body of literature was written about contemporary royal courts, and about the real and fictional people who comprised them. The French writer Béroul wrote such a tale of courtly romance in his native language, while Map, a clerk and cleric at the court of Henry II, wrote his chronicles in Latin. Béroul was the author of what is considered to be the earliest version of the legend of Tristan and Iseut1, and Map of De Nugis Curialium, a selection of satirical tales examining courtly and monastic life. Both writers present life at court as violent, often bleak and miserable, full of intrigue, in a place where allegiances are constantly shifting. Relationships between the sexes are also fraught, sometimes falling prey to courtiers' plotting, and there are many illicit love affairs being conducted. Kings are suspicious of their wives, and as a result some queens are murdered. -

pg 1/2 Matilda of Scotland Born: 1069 Dunfermline, Scotland Married: King Henry I of England Died: 1 May 1118 Parents: Malcolm III of Scotland & Margaret Athling Matilda of Scotland[1] (born Edith; c. 1080 – 1 May 1118) was the first wife and queen consort of Henry I. Early life Matilda was born around 1080 in Dunfermline, the daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland and Saint Margaret. She was christened Edith, and Robert Curthose stood as godfather at her christening — the English queen Matilda of Flanders was also present at the font and may have been her godmother. When she was about six years old, Matilda and her sister Mary were sent to Romsey, where their aunt Cristina was abbess. During her stay at Romsey and Wilton, Matilda was much sought-after as a bride; she turned down proposals from both William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey, and Alan Rufus, Lord of Richmond. Hermann of Tournai even claims that William II Rufus considered marrying her. She was out of the monastery by 1093, when Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, wrote to the Bishop of Salisbury ordering that the daughter of the king of Scotland be returned to the monastery that she had left. Marriage After the death of William II Rufus in August 1100, his brother Henry quickly seized the royal treasury and the royal crown. His next task was to marry, and Henry's choice fell on Matilda. Because Matilda had spent most of her life in a nunnery, there was some controversy over whether or not she had been veiled as a nun and would thus be ineligible for marriage. -

This study is meant to illuminate the lives of the women in the Anglo-Norman chronicles at every stage of life. While many modern books have addressed medieval women, they have attempted to deal with women more generally, looking at many areas and societies over hundreds of years. Other modern historians have focused on a few select women using evidence from the same Anglo-Norman chronicles used in this study. -

(2009) The other Saint Bernard: The 'troubled and varied career' of Bernard of Abbeville, Abbot of Tiron, Journal of Ecclesiastical History, 60 (4), pp. 657-672 http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/S0022046909990042 White Rose Research Online [email protected] The Other Saint Bernard: the ‘troubled and varied career’ of Bernard of Abbeville, Abbot of Tiron ‘A troubled and varied career.’1 Such is David Knowles’ assessment of Bernard of Abbeville, founder of the abbey of Tiron, which lies in the wooded landscape of the Perche region between Alençon and Chartres in western France.2 Bernard’s career is conventionally coupled with those of Robert of Arbrissel and Vitalis of Mortain, all of them important figures in the ascetic revival in monasticism which gripped western Europe in the late eleventh and early twelfth centuries.3 Yet while the Fontevraudine and Savignac affiliations that derived from Robert and Vitalis’s activities have been much discussed, there is no major history of the abbey of Tiron. The rigour of Bernard’s approach to monastic life, however, was much admired by contemporaries, including the kings, Henry I of England, David I of Scotland and Louis VI of France. His abbey of Tiron was the source for over a hundred communities throughout France and perhaps surprisingly in Scotland, Wales and England.4 The speed with which these daughter houses were established over such a broad area was remarkable, but the impetus was not sustained, and the so-called ‘Order of Tiron’ had ceased to be an influential force within the western monastic tradition by the beginning of the thirteenth century.
