    Apotheosis of St. Louis The plaster statue of King Louis IX of France (1214- 1270) was sculpted by Charles Henry Niehaus for the 1904 World’s Fair. After the Fair, the Louisiana Purchase Exposition Company decided to present a bronze version of the sculpture to the City of St. Louis. The plaster was cast in bronze by W. R. Hodges. The statue has stood tall upon Art Hill since 1906. WHO WAS ST. LOUIS ANYWAY? St. Louis IX was King of France from 1226 to 1270. He was crowned king at the age of 12 and his mother ruled the kingdom as regent until he reached maturity. A devout Catholic, St. Louis was known for his sense of justice and piety. He led two crusades to recover the Holy Land, the second of which led to his death. He is the only French king to be canonized a saint. He was a family man. He was a loving husband to Margaret of Provence and father to eleven children. He was very close to his mother, Queen Blanche, who instilled in him a deep love for his faith. He was a humanitarian. He fed the poor daily at his table in the palace and washed their feet every Saturday. He often visited hospitals and tend- ed to the sick. He built hospitals, libraries, orphanages, and hostels for the blind and for women. He promoted justice, peace, and reform. He reformed the courts and the tax system, introduced the concept of the presumption of innocence in criminal procedure, and eliminated trial by combat and trial by ordeal, replacing them with trial by jury.

    Wilson 5/13/09 6:36 PM Page 29 The Journal of Conflict Studies Hamlet – With and Without the Prince: Terrorism at the Outbreak of the First World War by Keith Wilson ABSTRACT While the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 helped to set in train a series of reactions by various governments that led to the outbreak of the First World War, the story neither begins nor ends there. From an historian’s perspective, this simple ‘cause and effect’ formula does not do justice to what is a far more complex story. This article assesses that event’s place in histo- ry by situating it within a wider context. It explores how the assassi- nation interacted, first with the Byzantine geopolitics of the Balkans and the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and then with the weltanschaung of Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany, to become a catalyst for war. If the events of 1914 tell us anything about the nature of ter- rorism they first illustrate ‘the law of unintended consequences.’ Terrorists are not always able to control the outcome of their actions, which depends on how others react. The Archduke’s assassins did not intend to start a global war by killing him. Unwittingly, they provid- ed the Kaiser with the pretext for a war that he had sought for two years. Second, and flowing from that, it is clear that the significance of terrorist campaigns and actions cannot be understood in isolation from the political contexts in which they occur. Finally, in their desire to strike a blow against a ‘foreign’ authority, one can see that the motives and actions of the Archduke’s attackers were analogous to those of other insurgents before and since.

DNA EVIDENCE and LOUIS XVII Jean-Louis Prieur (1759-1795) created this illustration of Louis-Charles, the French Dauphin, depicting his treatment in prison. The title of this 1794 work is: Simon le cordonnier et Louis XVII au Temple (“Simon the Shoemaker and Louis XVII at the Temple”). Once his father was executed, royalists referred to the Dauphin as King Louis XVII. The illustration is maintained at the BnF and is online via Gallica (the BnF’s digitized gallery). Louis-Charles, the orphaned son of a king and—to royalists—a king (Louis XVII) himself, would have been better off had his captors simply killed him. Instead, he endured unimaginable conditions in Temple prison, existing in a room above his sister. When first imprisoned, he was a bright, good-looking child: ...his blue eyes, aquiline nose, elevated nostrils, well-defined mouth, pouting lips, chestnut hair parted in the middle and falling in thick curls on his shoulders, resembled his mother before her years of tears and torture. Early life Matilda was born around 1080 in Dunfermline, the daughter of Malcolm III of Scotland and Saint Margaret. She was christened Edith, and Robert Curthose stood as godfather at her christening — the English queen Matilda of Flanders was also present at the font and may have been her godmother. When she was about six years old, Matilda and her sister Mary were sent to Romsey, where their aunt Cristina was abbess. During her stay at Romsey and Wilton, Matilda was much sought-after as a bride; she turned down proposals from both William de Warenne, 2nd Earl of Surrey, and Alan Rufus, Lord of Richmond. Hermann of Tournai even claims that William II Rufus considered marrying her. She was out of the monastery by 1093, when Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, wrote to the Bishop of Salisbury ordering that the daughter of the king of Scotland be returned to the monastery that she had left. Marriage After the death of William II Rufus in August 1100, his brother Henry quickly seized the royal treasury and the royal crown. His next task was to marry, and Henry's choice fell on Matilda. Because Matilda had spent most of her life in a nunnery, there was some controversy over whether or not she had been veiled as a nun and would thus be ineligible for marriage.
