D. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation, The ‘Bestli’ Outlaw: Wilderness and Exile in Old and Middle English Literature explores the reasons for the survival of the beast-like outlaw, a transgressive figure who highlights tensions in normative definitions of human and natural, which came to represent both the fears and the desires of a people in a state of constant negotiation with the land they inhabited. Although the outlaw’s shelter in the wilderness changed dramatically from the dense and menacing forests of Anglo-Saxon England to the bright, known, and mapped greenwood of the late outlaw romances and ballads, the outlaw remained strongly animalistic, other, and liminal, in strong contrast to premodern notions of what it meant to be human and civilized. I argue that outlaw narratives become particularly popular and poignant at moments of national political and ecological crisis—as they did during the Viking attacks of the Anglo-Saxon period, the epoch of intense natural change following the Norman Conquest, and the beginning of the market revolution at the end of the Middle Ages. Figures like the Anglo-Saxon resistance fighter Hereward, the exiled Marcher lord Fulk Fitz Waryn, and the brutal yet courtly Gamelyn and Robin Hood, represent a lost England imagined as pristine and forested.

There have survived at least sixteen editions published before the appearance of Thynne's, which includes the Canterbury Tales, Troilus and Criseyde, House of Fame, Parliament of Fowls and several other works.<ll Among them, the Canterbury Tales was so popular that as many as five editions were published. Shortly after he set up the first printing shop in England, Caxton published his first edition c. 1476 (STC 5082) and consequently, around 1483, his 2 second edition (STC 5083) .< > Those who work on English incunabula have accepted that Caxton revised the text of his first edition, though 3 partially, with a manuscript source.< > Following Caxton's death in 1491, Richard Pynson published it in 1492 (STC 5084) and afterwards in 1526 (STC 5086).

I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. Xue Aiyi Shanghai Shixi Highschool, Shanghai 200040, China ABSTRACT. Status and change of kingship and barons’ power in medieval England have a significant effect in the development of western society, politics, and justice. Thus, opinions and records form jurists in medieval England partially reflected the change in nature of justice and society, which led absolute monarchy to become constitutional monarchy. On the basis of previous studies, this paper specifically focus on writings of Henry de Bracton, an English jurist, aiming to provide further distinctive opinions by analyzing his writings. The content of this paper is divided into three parts altogether: The first part is chapter one, introducing Henry de Bracton, his works, and their value for understanding nature of justice and society status in medieval England. The second part is from chapter two to chapter five, analyzing status of kingship and barons’ power reflected in De Legibus et Consuetudinibus Angliae, Magna Carta, and Bracton’s notebook, detailly interpreting the legal articles and practical law cases in medieval England. Introduction Henry de Bracton (c.1210-1268) was an English jurist. At what stage in their lives was the decision taken that they should enter the clergy, and who made this decision? Did they continue to maintain ties with their families, and if so, how? How were they trained for their roles in the Church? Attempting to answer these questions sheds light on central aspects of western European society: family networks, education, administration, pastoral care and ecclesiastical institutions. Unlike monks and nuns, however, whose career patterns and family background have attracted considerable attention,1 the clergy of the period from 800 to 1200 have suffered neglect, but unjustly so, on several counts: they were numerous, and their lives and activities were woven into those of the laity of the societies in which they lived. Moreover, though the majority had significance only as part of a larger whole, a sizeable minority were doers and thinkers, many at the forefront of the whole range of cultural developments. Bruce 00 Sunt altera nobis sidera, sunt orbes alii: Imagining Subterranean Peoples and Places in Medieval Latin 00 Literature 105 118 Owing to the enduring popularity of Jules Verne’s science fiction story Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), modern readers have taken for granted a hollow, habitable 2020 core beneath the earth’s crust as a time-honored, though scientifically implausible, setting for speculative fiction.1 Verne’s fantastic tale of Professor Otto Lidenbrock’s descent into the Icelandic volcano Snæfellsjökull and his perilous adventures under- ground featuring forests of giant mushrooms and prehistoric monsters remains the most widely read work of nineteenth-century “subterranean fiction.” In 1926, the story was reprinted in a three-part serial in the widely-read American science fiction maga- zine Amazing Stories (Fig. 1). Throughout the twentieth century, it spawned a host of imitators, from Edgar Rice Burrough’s Pellucidar series (1914‒1963) to C. S. Lewis’ Narnian chronicle The Silver Chair (1953), as well as a successful 1959 film adaptation starring James Mason and Pat Boone. The notion that the earth was both hollow and habitable predated Jules Verne by at least two centuries. In 1665, the German Jesuit and polymath Athanasius Kircher (1602‒1680) published his lavishly illustrated, two-volume Mundus subterraneus, an 800‒page potpourri of scientific knowledge and folkloric accretion about the geography and ecology of subterranean realms, with long digressions on the existence of under- world megafauna, like giants and dragons, and some first-rate speculation on the site of lost Atlantis.2 Like the hero of Verne’s story, Kircher was intrigued by the possibility that volcanoes provided gateways to the lightless world below.
