You will fi nd several top consignments that include a wide range of wines – from benchmark Bordeaux and Burgundy to the most highly sought wines from California. The full cases of top Bordeaux will certainly be of interest to many collectors. In addition to the amazing Lafi te including 1982 (lots 82-83) and 2000 (lots 107-108), bidders should note the full cases in the consignment found in lots 242-391, which contains a great selection Paul Hart of modern vintages. Further gems are found in lots 430-491, from the cold, temperature President & CEO Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. controlled cellar of a longtime client and friend who we have been working with for over 15 years. Here you will fi nd 1989 Haut-Brion (lot 437), 1990 Cheval-Blanc (lot 441), along with fi rst growth cases from 1995, 1996 and 2000. California collectors will certainly not be disappointed! The selection of Screaming Eagle, Harlan, Bryant and Araujo is not often seen. We are also pleased to offer an exceptional group of wines from Joseph Phelps Vineyard from the cellars of Craig Williams, the former winemaker at the property. The consignment includes Insignia dating back to 1974 and further historic verticals of Eisele and Backus Cabernets that have aged remarkably and are now diffi cult to fi nd. Whether you are a collector of Madeira, or you have yet to explore this unique and historic region, you will want to review lots 532-554. We have offered so many wonderful groups from this unrivaled cellar – always with happy buyers reporting back on these great bottles. We have a remarkable team at Hart Davis Hart and we are the most experienced in the industry. We hope that you will plan to join us in Chicago for this auction on Saturday, November 1! Sincerely, Paul Hart President & CEO October 2008 Refl ections by Kevin A. Swersey, Senior Consultant As the second year of my consulting relationship for Hart Davis Hart comes to a close, I thought I would take this opportunity and refl ect what it’s been like for me over the past two years. Being a born and raised New Yorker, I must say I held my breath when I initially signed up Kevin Swersey Senior Consultant to start consulting for HDH in January of 2007. What would it be like traveling back and Hart Davis Hart Wine Co. forth to Chicago (truth be told, if the winds are just right, I can make it from Westchester County Airport to O’Hare in less time than it takes me to get from my home in Westchester to a client on Wall Street)? And what about the food...what is this deep dish pizza all about? You need a shovel to eat it! I still favor New York’s thin crust foldable pizza, but that is just a matter of personal taste. My family and I were able to do something that hasn’t happened in 25 years. We attended a Mets vs. Cubs game at Wrigley in the afternoon, then went to see the Yankees vs. White Sox at US Cellular fi eld that evening—something we will never forget! Wrigley Field is truly awesome. Any and all baseball fans should make the trip to Chicago to experience this American icon. I am not sure whether it’s the fact that Wrigley is smack in the middle of a real neighborhood, the smell of those hot dogs, the beauty of the ivy growing on the outfi eld walls, or the passion of the fans, the intimacy of the park is like none I have ever experienced. Wow! And what has it been like working with the world’s best and most experienced wine auction team? Their Midwestern manner of conducting business is refreshing, a passion for what they do, a level of professionalism not seen in many businesses these days, and a success story that really needs a Harvard Business Review study. From the Verlin auctions through numerous 100% sold sales and most recently, The Fox Cellar, the team at Hart Davis Hart is committed to getting things done correctly, the fi rst time. As the ink dries on my story, we have just lived through the rewriting of the US fi nancial system, yet the 2-day Fox Sale just vaulted HDH into the record books yet again with a sale total of $11.2 million, and another 100% sold sale. A case of 1982 Lafi te even sold for more than a case of 1982 Petrus. Wow! To all my colleagues, and now friends, at HDH thank you for inviting me into your family, and look forward to many more successful and prosperous years together in the future.
