TXAKOLINA TINTO Doniene Gorrondona Is a Winery Located in the Once Famous Bakio Region of the Basque Country of Spain DONIENE GORRONDONA TXAKOLINA TINTO Doniene Gorrondona is a winery located in the once famous Bakio region of the Basque Country of Spain. The Bakio region used to be a major wine producing area in Bizkaia. Three friends from the region rehabilitated and modernized this ancient vineyard and winery. They farm a total of twelve hectares, two of which are from centennial pre-phylloxera Hondarribi Beltza vines. The building they acquired came with eight pot stills. They produce artisanal quantities of orujo, a type of distilled spirits similar to a French Marc or Italian Grappa. Varietal/Blend: 100% Hondarribi Beltza Farming: Lutte Raisonnée Soil: clay with slate subsoil Vine Age: 150+ years Yeast: indigenous Fermentation: fermentation in stainless steel Aging: N/A Alcohol: 12% Fined: N/A Filtered: N/A The vineyards here are unique within the D.O. of Bizkaiko; the vines line the steep slopes of the Bakio valley that face to- ward the Atlantic The unique location of this winery is evident from the moment one Ocean. The centennial, pre-phylloxera vines are terraced on these steps into the Bakio valley. This bowl faces the Cantabrian slopes and farmed organically. They grow two types of grapes in their Ocean, with steep facings creating a unique landscape. On these 12 hectares: Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Beltza. Two of these facings are planted Hondarribi Zurri. All of these well drained soils hectares are dedi- cated to Hondarribi Beltza, the red txakolina grape. are farmed organically. Likewise, Spain is incredibly rich in culture, with a wide array of languages, histories, cultures, and cuisines found throughout the nation. The sheer number and variety of Spanish wines and the incredible variety of cultures found in Spain may be daunting to the uninitiated. Thus, a guide to Spanish wine and culture, which not only details the two but links them, as well, may prove very helpful to the Spanish wine newcomer or perhaps even a sommelier. This thesis-guide was compiled through the research of the various Denominaciones de Origen of Spain, the history of Spain, the regions of Spain and their individual histories and cultures, and, of course, the many, many wines of Spain.

  • Berroia Txakoli De Bizkaia
Berroia Txakoli de Bizkaia Txakoli, the wine of Pais Vasco (Basque Country) in northern Spain, is just like the region’s language, culture, and food – completely independent of the world around it. Txakoli is made from indigenous grapes Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Beltza, that literally grow nowhere else in the world. Txakoli are wines of the sea – saline, with bracing acid and refreshing, clean mouthfeel. Within Pais Vasco, there are 2 distinct styles of wine called Txakoli. One is the Getaria style, slightly effervescent, almost cider-like - the style that is most familiar to American wine drinkers. Berroia is an estate-bottled wine made by Bodegas Berroja in the Bizkaia style, where the wines are made with more power and ageability. Elegant, savory and saline, Berroia Txakoli is a pre-eminent example. WHAT MAKES THIS WINE UNIQUE?: Bodegas Berroja is surrounded by a protected national forest called Urdaibai near the village of Guernica. Berroia Txakoli is a rare gem: a fuller-bodied example hailing from the lesser-known DO Bizkaiko Txakolina. A savory, elegant expression of this maritime terroir, this is a still wine with no effervescence. While delicious young, Berroia can age beautifully up to a decade or more. RATING HISTORY: 2017 89 JS; 2015 90VM; 2013 90IWC GRAPE: 85% Hondarrabi Zuri, 10% Riesling, 5% Folle Blanche. Sustainably grown (certified) vines planted in 1997. Tended in limestone and sandy soil at 200 m (656 ft) elevation. This is a vegan wine. PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: Comparable to other iconic European white wines, like Gruner or Muscadet in its weight and acidity, Berroia is a versatile wine that pairs well with difficult foods – artichokes and asparagus included! The salinity in this wine finds it locally paired with briny seafood dishes such as anchovies and oysters; for those off the beaten path, Berroia handles food with spicy heat well.
