It is essential to note that during the period in question, the genre of the epic poem undergoes important transformations, having proceeded by several significant stages: the influence of the canonical models offered by Ariosto, Trissino and Tasso provoking infinite debates and querelles upon the nature of the epic genre; numerous theoretical reflexions stimulating literary practise, as well as constant search for novelty, all of these aspects implicating a number of poetic imitations of the above-mentioned models bordering on the firm determination to go beyond the established norms, exploring new approaches and new perspectives generously offered by the very historical reality of modern religious conflicts. In this context, historical epic poems devoted to the recent historical facts can be perceived as an authentic challenge for the European poets, presenting a complex relationship of continuity and deviation; combination of the classical tradition and the modern ambition of innovation – all of these traits are to be taken into account as far as the analysis of the ‘new’ category of epic poems is concerned. Thus, the crucial aspect of the poems in question consists in the novelty of the argument, the innovation of the classical tradition having implicated a drastic change of the famous rule Tasso had established in his Discorsi dell’arte poetica, according to which the action of the epic poem could refer neither to the times too remote, nor to the recent historical facts. From now on, the epic poet does not fear to break the rule, searching for inspiration not only in the glorious past, but as well in the contemporary historical events. As far as the issue of innovation of the epic genre is concerned, it is essential to stress its fundamental link with History inspiring the poets of the end of the Cinquecento - the second half of the Seicento to celebrate the religious wars, focusing their imagination upon the age-long Myth of the Crusade. It is a well-known fact that History had traditionally provided crucial material for the authors of the epic poems, but it is namely in the epoch in question that the poets start feeling encouraged to search for inspiration sources in recent historical facts, notably the religious wars with the Ottoman and Moorish civilisations. The conflicts between mutually hostile civilisations, or, to adopt Fernand Braudel’s terminology, the «external»1 wars become the incarnation that the Crusaders Myth finds in history, provoking immediate, as well as unprecedented literary response resulting in a totally new stage of the complex process of the epic poetry’s evolution. II, 1966, pp. 170-172. 6 historical situation reveals to be perfectly inscribed in the model of the heroic epic poem traditionally representing the historical facts in the allegorical context of the absolute good incarnated by the Christians and the absolute evil incarnated by the adversaries of the Christian civilisation. As has already been mentioned above, we have chosen to focus upon European poems treating the essential religious conflicts between Christian and Islamic civilisations: the turning points of the Reconquista (the Conquest of Granada and the Alpujarra rebellion), as well as the culminating event in the Oriental war with the Ottoman Turks, i.e. the famous Battle of Lepanto. The two seemingly different historical conflicts nevertheless display a number of aspects in common as far as their literary representations are concerned. Thus, both of them, importantly enough can be inscribed into the framework of the ancient struggle of the Christian Europe with the Islamic world, both having been brought to life as the actual incarnations of the well-known Myth of the Crusade. Despite the obvious historical differences, in this literary optic, one may speak of the figure of ‘the same’ enemy – the demonic figure of ‘Other’, i.e. a different, hostile civilisation presenting a considerable menace for the intrinsically Christian identity of the Mediterranean Europe. Yet, it should be noted that the allegorical approach in question still remains a hypothesis that we shall seek to verify by way of analyzing specific texts. Our main objective, thus, comprises the thorough analysis of the heroic epic poems treating the above-mentioned religious conflicts, the selected texts belonging to various European epic traditions: the Italian, the French and the Spanish one. By way of undertaking a meticulous analysis of the selected poetic texts, we are going to trace essential aspects peculiar to the new category of the epic genre, as well as try to investigate the differences and similarities European poems in question display when treating the complex theme of actual historical clashes between Christian and Islamic civilisations. In Chapter I, we shall introduce the general problematic of the present work, dwelling in particular upon the historical, social and political issues favouring the existence and evolution of ‘historical’ epic poems. A detailed description of the role of the European Court shall be provided to complete the socio-cultural background indissolubly linked with the existence of the epic genre. Chapter

It has finally been released. As an individual sponsor, I have already received a copy, which I have reviewed on page 6 of this newsletter. In a word, it is superb! The Maltese Consul General, Mr. Victor Grech, will officially launch the book in Melbourne at our next meeting on 21 July.     Orhan Kolog˘lu RENEGADES AND THE CASE · ULUÇ/KILIÇ ALI In the history of the Mediterranean region, the Renegade of the Christians who becomes a Mühtedi by joining the Muslim religion, has played an important role. In European languages the Renegade is the person who abandons Christianity for a different faith. The Mühtedi, on the other hand, according to Muslim and Turkish communities, is the person of another faith who embraces Islam. Since Islam began to spread 600 years after Christianity, it gathered its early followers among pagans, a few Jews but especially Christians. Its rapid spread over Syria, Egypt, North Africa, Sicily, Spain and into central France indicates that all Mediterranean communities were largely affected by the religion. Christianity, which had become the domineering and ruling faith through Papacy and the Byzantine Empire, was now lar- gely disturbed by this competitor. For this reason, it was only natural that both sides scrutinized the Renegade/Mühtedi very closely. The concern of one side in losing a believer matched the concern of the other side in preventing the loss of the Mühtedi, who is then called a Mürted (apostate, the verb is irtidad). European research on this subject outweighs the research done by Muslims, because renegades had not only been, quantitative-wise, many times more than mürteds, but also they played more important roles as history-makers in the Mediterranean. Muslim indifference to their past is easily understandable because the interest was focused only on their activities as Muslims. However, European research bears the mark of the Christian perspective and has a reactionary approach.

However, in the mid-sixteenth century the Papacy adopted a far more lenient policy out of considerations of commercial raison d' état and invited New Christian merchants to assume Judaism in Ancona with assurance of complete freedom from any persecution. At the same time, Venice expelled all Marranos from the city and forbade them to return. The papal attitude changed with the Counter- Reformation and former New Christians who had reverted to Judaism in Ancona were burned at the stake. However, slightly later in a step that was followed by the Medici for Pisa-Livorno, the Venetian government invited New Christians to settle in Venice freely on the condition that they assumed Judaism and resided in the ghetto as Jews and assured them that their past conduct would not be investigated. In justification, among other arguments the Venetians pointed out that since Popes had once granted such permissions, it could not be claimed that they were forbidden by canon law. An examination of select passages from the documents preserved regarding the issuing of the first charter of the Levantine and Ponentine merchants in Venice in 1589, the two opening passages of the second charter in 1598, and a consulto of the Venetian consultore in iure Paolo Sarpi will illustrate the ideological background and practical manifestations of the new attitude toward New Christians assuming Judaism and their resulting legal status, which can be seen as one of the harbingers of a new attitude of European states toward Jews determined by economic considerations of raison d’état rather than by religious concerns.

    Christian Allies of the Ottoman Empire by Emrah Safa Gürkan The relationship between the Ottomans and the Christians did not evolve around continuous hostility and conflict, as is generally assumed. The Ottomans employed Christians extensively, used Western know-how and technology, and en- couraged European merchants to trade in the Levant. On the state level, too, what dictated international diplomacy was not the religious factors, but rather rational strategies that were the results of carefully calculated priorities, for in- stance, several alliances between the Ottomans and the Christian states. Notes Citation Introduction Cooperation between the Ottomans and various Christian groups and individuals started as early as the beginning of the 14th century, when the Ottoman state itself emerged. The Ottomans, although a Muslim polity, did not hesitate to cooperate with Christians for practical reasons. Nevertheless, the misreading of the Ghaza (Holy War) literature1 and the consequent romanticization of the Ottomans' struggle in carrying the banner of Islam conceal the true nature of rela- tions between Muslims and Christians. Rather than an inevitable conflict, what prevailed was cooperation in which cul- tural, ethnic, and religious boundaries seemed to disappear. DESCRIPTION DU PROJET La recherche porte sur les présences artistiques françaises à la cour des Este au XVIIe siècle en les inscrivant dans le cadre plus vaste des relations politico-culturelles entre Modène et Paris. On connait très bien l’alliance que le duc de Modena Francesco I (1610-1658) avait nouée avec la couronne de France en 1647, lorsque les tentatives diplomatiques avaient déjà permis au cardinal Rinaldo, frère du duc, de gagner la « protection de la France ». En effet Francesco I conduisit une politique étrangère changeante et prudente qui fut couronnée par sa visite à Paris en 1655, où il obtint le titre de « Generalissimo » des troupes françaises en Italie. À cette occasion le duc conclut les négociations du mariage de son fils aîné avec la nièce du cardinal Mazarin Laura Martinozzi. Au-delà des liens politiques et conjugaux, les deux cours sont reliées par des choix artistiques similaires, tellement ressemblants que Peter Burke, dans son œuvre The fabrication of Louis XIV (1992), a tracé un véritable « Paris-Modena axis ». L’historien montre comment le mécénat artistique des Este a fourni un modèle rapidement imité par Louis XIV. Cette reconstruction est confirmée par des exemples illustres comme les séjours de Gaspare et Carlo Vigarani et de Gian Lorenzo Bernini qui, après avoir servi le duc de Modena, ont été convoqués à Paris pour des commissions similaires. Les deux premiers fournirent en 1659 des projets pour la construction de la Salle des Machines, construite aux Tuileries et conçue sur le modèle du Théâtre Ducal de Modène, terminé en 1656.
