TRANSITS OF THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE TO END OF THE 2020 NAVIGATION SEASON ATLANTIC OCEAN ↔ ARCTIC OCEAN ↔ PACIFIC OCEAN R. K. Headland and colleagues 7 April 2021 Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, United Kingdom, CB2 1ER. <[email protected]> The earliest traverse of the Northwest Passage was completed in 1853 starting in the Pacific Ocean to reach the Atlantic Oceam, but used sledges over the sea ice of the central part of Parry Channel. Subsequently the following 319 complete maritime transits of the Northwest Passage have been made to the end of the 2020 navigation season, before winter began and the passage froze. These transits proceed to or from the Atlantic Ocean (Labrador Sea) in or out of the eastern approaches to the Canadian Arctic archipelago (Lancaster Sound or Foxe Basin) then the western approaches (McClure Strait or Amundsen Gulf), across the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean, through the Bering Strait, from or to the Bering Sea of the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Circle is crossed near the beginning and the end of all transits except those to or from the central or northern coast of west Greenland. The routes and directions are indicated. Details of submarine transits are not included because only two have been reported (1960 USS Sea Dragon, Capt. George Peabody Steele, westbound on route 1 and 1962 USS Skate, Capt. Joseph Lawrence Skoog, eastbound on route 1). Seven routes have been used for transits of the Northwest Passage with some minor variations (for example through Pond Inlet and Navy Board Inlet) and two composite courses in summers when ice was minimal (marked ‘cp’). -

BACKGROUNDER Silversea is a luxury cruise company reflec3ng genera3ons of mari3me and travel experience. In the early 1990s, the Lefebvre family of Rome, former owners of Sitmar Cruises, conceived and organised a unique cruise company pledging to build and operate the highest quality ships in the ultra-luxury segment. The name "Silversea" was chosen because it connotes quality and luxury as well as capturing the romance and special sensa3ons of the sea. Silversea launched its first ship, Silver Cloud, in 1994, followed by Silver Wind in 1995, Silver Shadow in 2000, and Silver Whisper in 2001. The fleet was purpose-built for the ultra-luxury market, establishing a new class of smaller, in3mate vessels that could slip into more exo3c ports off the beaten path. These elite vessels were specifically designed for fewer guests, with more space and the highest levels of personalised service, delivered by mainly Italian and other European officers overseeing an interna3onal staff. In December 2009 Silversea took delivery of its next genera3on of ultra-luxury vessel, Silver Spirit. At 36,000 grosse tonnes (gr)t, and accommoda3ng just 540 guests, this in3mate ship has spacious suites— with 95% featuring a private veranda—and one of the highest space-to-guest ra3os at sea today. The onboard decor lends a sophis3cated 1930s Art Deco ambience to the public spaces, highlights of which include an indoor/outdoor spa measuring over 8,300 square feet (770 square metres), a resort-style pool, four whirlpools, and a choice of six dining venues including Seishin, showcasing Asian-fusion cuisine, and the innova3ve Stars Supper Club, offering trendseng menus and all-night entertainment. -

SILVERSEA CRUISES ANNOUNCES A NEW SISTER SHIP TO BE BUILT BY FINCANTIERI The cruise line orders one sister ship of Silver Muse Expected to be delivered in 2020 (Monte Carlo, Monaco – September 13, 2017) Silversea Cruises and Fincantieri have announced the signing of a contract worth approximately 310 million euros for the construction of a new ultra-luxury cruise ship. The ship is due to join the Silversea fleet in 2020. The new ship, tentatively named Silver Moon, will be the sister ship of Silver Muse which was delivered in April 2017 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente (Genoa). At 40,700 gross tons and with a capacity to accommodate 596 passengers on board, Silver Moon will maintain the small-ship intimacy and spacious all-suite accommodation, which is the hallmark of the Silversea experience. The new build will expand Silversea's fleet to 10 ships and will significantly raise the bar in the ultra-luxury segment with a wealth of enhancements to the on board experience while satisfying the uncompromising requirements for comfort, service and quality of the world's most discerning travellers. Among the highlights of the new ship, the “Green Star 3 Design” will be a stand out feature. It is assigned to ships that are designed, built and equipped in order to prevent air and water pollution. Furthermore, the “COMF-NOISE A PAX” and “COMF-NOISE B CREW” are assigned on the basis of the noise levels measured on the ship. Results have shown that new-builds assigned these standards offer the very best levels of comfort to guests on board. -

SCH ADDS SILVERSEA CRUISES TO SOUTHAMPTON CRUISE PORTFOLIO | 1 SCH ADDS SILVERSEA CRUISES TO SOUTHAMPTON CRUISE PORTFOLIO Port terminal operators SCH have expanded their cruise ship business in Southampton for 2017 by securing the stevedoring and other ship support services for calls by Silversea Cruises. The addition of the ultra luxury Silversea ships to SCH’s portfolio means the port services company will handle some 100 cruise ship calls in Southampton during this year. Silversea Cruises will make 11 calls in Southampton during 2017, offering cruises round Britain and to Northern and Western Europe on its small, exclusive vessels Silver Whisper, Silver Explorer, Silver Muse and Silver Wind. The 40,700 tonnes Silver Muse, with accommodation for just under 600 guests, will make her debut in Southampton after being built in Italy. She is due to enter service in the Spring and will make her maiden Southampton calls in September. SCH will provide baggage, storing and mooring services during the ships’ visits to Southampton. Cruise Operation Manager Glen Gardner explained: “Silversea Cruises are a prestigious addition to the fleet of ships that we handle in Southampton. By tailoring our services to the individual requirements of our cruise customers, we are growing our market share of cruise business in the port, both in stevedoring and valet car parking.” SCH’s other major cruise customers in Southampton are Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises, Saga Cruises and Azamara Cruises. Forced to drop out of Harvard following his family’s sudden financial ruin, Gibbs overcame debilitating shyness and lack of formal training to become the visionary creator of some of the finest ships in history. Steven Ujifusa is an historian and a resident of Philadelphia who has written numerous articles on architecture and urban history. When he is not writing, he enjoys singing, photography, rowing on the Schuylkill River, and travel. A native of Chappaqua, New York, Steven received his undergraduate degree in history from Harvard University and a joint masters in historic preservation and real estate development from the University of Pennsylvania.
