Although most river cruising is centred on Europe the growth is world- wide. River cruise companies are investing heavily with new ships and on-board facilities. An announcement regarding modifications to navigational rules in France may see even longer vessels in that country. A highlight this year was the christening in one day of 10 new Longships by Viking River Cruises. The popularity with Australian and New Zealanders according to the latest Cruise Industry Reports compiled by CLIA Australasia reveal that river cruising numbers for Australians in 2012 continues to expand with 12 per cent more passengers (39,275) opting for this niche holiday experience and for New Zealanders river cruising experienced strong growth, rising 32 per cent from 2651 passengers in 2011 to 3502 in 2012. Here in Australia the Captain Cook Murray Princess provides a great

river cruise experience and then there are a number of paddle steamers at Echuca in Victoria. Expedition ships are offering excellent voyages in Papua New Guinea and in China and South-East Asia the markets are growing. A cruise onboard the Road To Mandalay is an adventure of a lifetime cruising along the Ayeyarwady River in Myanmar (Burma). River cruising is growing on the Amazon and North America provides many opportunities particularly on the Mississippi and other places. Across Europe the Danube, Rhine and Rhone are popular, however many are now choosing adventures on the Main, Saone, Moselle and Seine rivers or venturing to Portugal or Russia or Vietnam. Others are enjoying canal barge cruising in Britain and Europe, particularly in France.

It is said 500,000 people are currently taking a river cruise in Europe alone and that number will continue to grow plus others cruising elsewhere means the River Cruise boom is here for sometime yet.

Our arrival into Stockholm took us through 58 miles of islands before we docked. Nestled on the shores were such quaint homes of various colours and vee shaped roofs. They looked so pretty with the surrounding green grass and trees. We took a boat cruise up through the lock into a lake from which we saw great views of the city and its old buildings. Stockholm is often referred to as the Venice of the north as its 14 islands are connected by enchanting bridges. After a lovely warm day a thunderstorm struck with torrential rain as we departed.
