Page 76 MS Silver Discoverer Stefan Kredel Director Expedition Shore Programs Stefan Kredel grew up and went to school in Murnau, in the south of Germany. After training as a paramedic, Stefan went cycling through India, Nepal, New Zealand and South America on his own. In Nepal he walked the Annapurna Circle Track, in New Zealand he hiked various National Parks and in Peru he followed the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu. Stefan studied Geology and Paleontology at the “Ludwig Maximillians University” in Munich, receiving his Master’s degree in 1999. Various excursions during this time at the university led him all across Germany, Austria, Italy and South Africa. In Africa, he visited some of the biggest copper, gold and diamond mines in the world. In one gold mine he descended more than 3000 meters below the surface. Stefan has lectured aboard expedition cruise ships since 1998. His first voyage took him to Antarctica and he has returned to this fascinating continent every single year on several occasions both as a lecturer and as Expedition Leader. His knowledge also extends to the North with visits to Svalbard, Jan Mayen, Iceland, Greenland, Hudson Bay, the Northwest Passage, Alaska’s Inside Passage, the Aleutians, the Kurils, Kamchatka, Franz Joseph Land and the very north itself – the North Pole. Stefan has sailed the West coast of Africa more than once, has visited many Pacific between Japan and Easter Island, and has ventured through the exotic Amazon region, sailing between Belem and Iquitos. As Director Expedition Shore Programs, Stefan divides his time between his home in Buenos Aires, scouting for new destinations and aboard Silver Discoverer, Silver Explorer or Silver Cloud leading voyages to the far corners of the Earth. Headland and colleagues 7 April 2021 Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, United Kingdom, CB2 1ER. <[email protected]> The earliest traverse of the Northwest Passage was completed in 1853 starting in the Pacific Ocean to reach the Atlantic Oceam, but used sledges over the sea ice of the central part of Parry Channel. Subsequently the following 319 complete maritime transits of the Northwest Passage have been made to the end of the 2020 navigation season, before winter began and the passage froze. These transits proceed to or from the Atlantic Ocean (Labrador Sea) in or out of the eastern approaches to the Canadian Arctic archipelago (Lancaster Sound or Foxe Basin) then the western approaches (McClure Strait or Amundsen Gulf), across the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean, through the Bering Strait, from or to the Bering Sea of the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Circle is crossed near the beginning and the end of all transits except those to or from the central or northern coast of west Greenland. The routes and directions are indicated. Details of submarine transits are not included because only two have been reported (1960 USS Sea Dragon, Capt. George Peabody Steele, westbound on route 1 and 1962 USS Skate, Capt. Joseph Lawrence Skoog, eastbound on route 1). Seven routes have been used for transits of the Northwest Passage with some minor variations (for example through Pond Inlet and Navy Board Inlet) and two composite courses in summers when ice was minimal (marked ‘cp’).

BACKGROUNDER Silversea is a luxury cruise company reflec3ng genera3ons of mari3me and travel experience. In the early 1990s, the Lefebvre family of Rome, former owners of Sitmar Cruises, conceived and organised a unique cruise company pledging to build and operate the highest quality ships in the ultra-luxury segment. The name "Silversea" was chosen because it connotes quality and luxury as well as capturing the romance and special sensa3ons of the sea. Silversea launched its first ship, Silver Cloud, in 1994, followed by Silver Wind in 1995, Silver Shadow in 2000, and Silver Whisper in 2001. The fleet was purpose-built for the ultra-luxury market, establishing a new class of smaller, in3mate vessels that could slip into more exo3c ports off the beaten path. SILVERSEA CRUISES ANNOUNCES A NEW SISTER SHIP TO BE BUILT BY FINCANTIERI The cruise line orders one sister ship of Silver Muse Expected to be delivered in 2020 (Monte Carlo, Monaco – September 13, 2017) Silversea Cruises and Fincantieri have announced the signing of a contract worth approximately 310 million euros for the construction of a new ultra-luxury cruise ship. The ship is due to join the Silversea fleet in 2020. The new ship, tentatively named Silver Moon, will be the sister ship of Silver Muse which was delivered in April 2017 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente (Genoa). At 40,700 gross tons and with a capacity to accommodate 596 passengers on board, Silver Moon will maintain the small-ship intimacy and spacious all-suite accommodation, which is the hallmark of the Silversea experience. The new build will expand Silversea's fleet to 10 ships and will significantly raise the bar in the ultra-luxury segment with a wealth of enhancements to the on board experience while satisfying the uncompromising requirements for comfort, service and quality of the world's most discerning travellers. Among the highlights of the new ship, the “Green Star 3 Design” will be a stand out feature. It is assigned to ships that are designed, built and equipped in order to prevent air and water pollution. Furthermore, the “COMF-NOISE A PAX” and “COMF-NOISE B CREW” are assigned on the basis of the noise levels measured on the ship. SCH ADDS SILVERSEA CRUISES TO SOUTHAMPTON CRUISE PORTFOLIO | 1 SCH ADDS SILVERSEA CRUISES TO SOUTHAMPTON CRUISE PORTFOLIO Port terminal operators SCH have expanded their cruise ship business in Southampton for 2017 by securing the stevedoring and other ship support services for calls by Silversea Cruises. The addition of the ultra luxury Silversea ships to SCH’s portfolio means the port services company will handle some 100 cruise ship calls in Southampton during this year. Silversea Cruises will make 11 calls in Southampton during 2017, oﬀering cruises round Britain and to Northern and Western Europe on its small, exclusive vessels Silver Whisper, Silver Explorer, Silver Muse and Silver Wind. The 40,700 tonnes Silver Muse, with accommodation for just under 600 guests, will make her debut in Southampton after being built in Italy. She is due to enter service in the Spring and will make her maiden Southampton calls in September. SCH will provide baggage, storing and mooring services during the ships’ visits to Southampton. Cruise Operation Manager Glen Gardner explained: “Silversea Cruises are a prestigious addition to the ﬂeet of ships that we handle in Southampton.
