Ice-Classed and Enhanced: Silversea Announces Plans for Additional Refurbishment of Silver Wind ICE-CLASSED AND ENHANCED: SILVERSEA ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR ADDITIONAL REFURBISHMENT OF SILVER WIND (Monaco -- December 19, 2018) Silversea Cruises announces plans for a second extensive refurbishment of Silver Wind, completing the major refurbishment project started in December 2018. The second dry dock period, which is scheduled for summer 2020, will give the ship ice-class classification and improved cruising versatility, as well as a number of improvements to the vessel’s interior. As a result, Silver Wind will unlock a broader range of deep travel experiences for guests in ultimate comfort, cruising both classic and expedition itineraries. Part of Project Invictus – a long-term plan to grow and improve Silversea’s already luxurious fleet of ships – the second extensive refurbishment of Silver Wind will begin in August 2020. As well as benefitting from a strengthened ice-class hull, new state-of-the-art equipment for cruising in remote regions, a fleet of Zodiacs and kayaks for on-water exploration, and an upgraded theatre, the second extensive refurbishment will enhance the ship’s comfort and Silversea’s hallmarks of luxury: all suites will undergo another full upgrade; the Spa & Salon will each be completely refurbished; the Reception/Atrium will be overhauled; and additional improvements will be made to La Dame, La Terrazza, the Main Bar, the Observation Lounge, the Panorama Lounge, the Pool Bar, public bathrooms, and the Theatre, among other spaces. Accommodating fewer guests (just 254) and retaining her characteristic sense of small- ship intimacy, Silver Wind will offer higher space ratios, a higher crew-to-guest ratio, and more upper suites, among other enhancements. Silver Wind will continue to take guests closer to the authentic beauty of the world’s iconic destinations, such as the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. In the Caribbean, the ship will continue to visit renowned ports, such as San Juan, Barbados and St. Barts, while her intimate size will also enable her to unlock smaller ports, including Bequia, Anguilla and Les Saintes. Mediterranean favourites, such as Venice, Monte Carlo and Barcelona, will also continue to feature on the ship’s sailed itineraries, along with more secluded destinations like Syros, Mljet, and Antibes. Silver Wind will also journey to extraordinary expedition destinations, including the Arctic and Antarctica. The enhanced ship will resume service on November 10, 2020, embarking on her inaugural season in Antarctica. Sample voyages from Silver Wind’s inaugural season in Antarctica will include: WI201121014 - Departing Ushuaia on November 21, 2020, on a 15-day roundtrip voyage, Silver Wind will spend a day at sea before calling at the Falkland Islands, the Drake Passage, Antarctic Sound, the Antarctic Peninsula, and the South Shetland Islands, before returning to Ushuaia via the Drake Passage. The ship’s first voyage in Antarctica will offer an array of unforgettable deep travel experiences: as well as penguins, seals, and a number of rare bird species, guests will have the chance to witness whales in their natural habitat. Zodiac and kayak tours led by Silversea’s Expedition Team will enrich the experience for guests. WI201205014 - The newly refurbished Silver Wind will follow the same itinerary from December 5, 2020, returning to Ushuaia on December 19. Enhanced by the presence of Silversea’s industry-leading Expedition Team – who will embellish the itinerary with a range of lectures, workshops and immersive shore excursions – the 15-day roundtrip voyage will offer an unforgettable journey to the last continent, in ultimate comfort. As part of the 2018 refurbishment, Silver Wind’s interior public spaces underwent extensive renovations: the Show Lounge, the Restaurant, the Card and Conference Room, and the Library have each been comprehensively revamped. New carpets throughout the ship and refurbished corridors have also invigorated public spaces. All guest suites have been upgraded and balcony floors have been enhanced. Outdoors, decks have been renovated and furniture has been replaced. "We are delighted to announce that our beloved Silver Wind will undergo a further extensive refurbishment in the summer of 2020, completing the enhancements made in December 2018," says Roberto Martinoli, Silversea's CEO. “Evolving the ship into an ice-class vessel, complete with Zodiacs and kayaks, will diversify her offering for our guests: she will be capable of unlocking deep travel experiences in both classic and expedition destinations, from the Caribbean to Antarctica, and everywhere in between.” The announcement of Silver Wind’s second refurbishment follows the news that Silversea Cruises has signed agreements for three new ultra-luxury ships. Guests can also expect more enhancements to Silversea’s rapidly growing fleet in the near future. • Transits of the Northwest Passage to End of the 2020 Navigation Season Atlantic Ocean ↔ Arctic Ocean ↔ Pacific Ocean
TRANSITS OF THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE TO END OF THE 2020 NAVIGATION SEASON ATLANTIC OCEAN ↔ ARCTIC OCEAN ↔ PACIFIC OCEAN R. K. Headland and colleagues 7 April 2021 Scott Polar Research Institute, University of Cambridge, Lensfield Road, Cambridge, United Kingdom, CB2 1ER. <[email protected]> The earliest traverse of the Northwest Passage was completed in 1853 starting in the Pacific Ocean to reach the Atlantic Oceam, but used sledges over the sea ice of the central part of Parry Channel. Subsequently the following 319 complete maritime transits of the Northwest Passage have been made to the end of the 2020 navigation season, before winter began and the passage froze. These transits proceed to or from the Atlantic Ocean (Labrador Sea) in or out of the eastern approaches to the Canadian Arctic archipelago (Lancaster Sound or Foxe Basin) then the western approaches (McClure Strait or Amundsen Gulf), across the Beaufort Sea and Chukchi Sea of the Arctic Ocean, through the Bering Strait, from or to the Bering Sea of the Pacific Ocean. The Arctic Circle is crossed near the beginning and the end of all transits except those to or from the central or northern coast of west Greenland. The routes and directions are indicated. Details of submarine transits are not included because only two have been reported (1960 USS Sea Dragon, Capt. George Peabody Steele, westbound on route 1 and 1962 USS Skate, Capt. Joseph Lawrence Skoog, eastbound on route 1). Seven routes have been used for transits of the Northwest Passage with some minor variations (for example through Pond Inlet and Navy Board Inlet) and two composite courses in summers when ice was minimal (marked ‘cp’).

  • Backgrounder
BACKGROUNDER Silversea is a luxury cruise company reflec3ng genera3ons of mari3me and travel experience. In the early 1990s, the Lefebvre family of Rome, former owners of Sitmar Cruises, conceived and organised a unique cruise company pledging to build and operate the highest quality ships in the ultra-luxury segment. The name "Silversea" was chosen because it connotes quality and luxury as well as capturing the romance and special sensa3ons of the sea. Silversea launched its first ship, Silver Cloud, in 1994, followed by Silver Wind in 1995, Silver Shadow in 2000, and Silver Whisper in 2001. The fleet was purpose-built for the ultra-luxury market, establishing a new class of smaller, in3mate vessels that could slip into more exo3c ports off the beaten path. These elite vessels were specifically designed for fewer guests, with more space and the highest levels of personalised service, delivered by mainly Italian and other European officers overseeing an interna3onal staff. In December 2009 Silversea took delivery of its next genera3on of ultra-luxury vessel, Silver Spirit. At 36,000 grosse tonnes (gr)t, and accommoda3ng just 540 guests, this in3mate ship has spacious suites— with 95% featuring a private veranda—and one of the highest space-to-guest ra3os at sea today. The onboard decor lends a sophis3cated 1930s Art Deco ambience to the public spaces, highlights of which include an indoor/outdoor spa measuring over 8,300 square feet (770 square metres), a resort-style pool, four whirlpools, and a choice of six dining venues including Seishin, showcasing Asian-fusion cuisine, and the innova3ve Stars Supper Club, offering trendseng menus and all-night entertainment.

An opportunity for Silversea’s valued Venetian Society to unite, the annual Venetian Society cruise enables guests to make new friends while enjoying bespoke experiences in ultimate comfort. While open to all, special enhancements will enrich the voyage exclusively for members of the Venetian Society, including unique events, special activities, sophisticated receptions and other privileges – both on- and off-shore. The cruise will be hosted by Fernando Barroso de Oliveira, the Ambassador to the Venetian Society for Silversea’s Chairman. On October 11, 2018, Silver Whisper will arrive in Barcelona, where esteemed members of the Venetian Society will enjoy an unprecedented insight into the local culture as part of a world-first, planned and operated exclusively by the ultra-luxury cruise line. With private access to the world heritage site after-hours, guests will have the chance to admire the pavilions’ lavish decorations while socializing with like-minded members of the Venetian Society. Then, while sipping cocktails at a hosted reception in the complex’s inner gardens, Silversea’s guests will witness a specially formed human tower exhibition - the very first of its kind in this venue - in which approximately 120 performers will demonstrate a Catalan tradition by forming a vast corporeal structure.

SILVERSEA CRUISES ANNOUNCES A NEW SISTER SHIP TO BE BUILT BY FINCANTIERI The cruise line orders one sister ship of Silver Muse Expected to be delivered in 2020 (Monte Carlo, Monaco – September 13, 2017) Silversea Cruises and Fincantieri have announced the signing of a contract worth approximately 310 million euros for the construction of a new ultra-luxury cruise ship. The ship is due to join the Silversea fleet in 2020. The new ship, tentatively named Silver Moon, will be the sister ship of Silver Muse which was delivered in April 2017 at the Fincantieri shipyard in Sestri Ponente (Genoa). At 40,700 gross tons and with a capacity to accommodate 596 passengers on board, Silver Moon will maintain the small-ship intimacy and spacious all-suite accommodation, which is the hallmark of the Silversea experience. The new build will expand Silversea's fleet to 10 ships and will significantly raise the bar in the ultra-luxury segment with a wealth of enhancements to the on board experience while satisfying the uncompromising requirements for comfort, service and quality of the world's most discerning travellers. 8/13/2018 email : Webview : SILVERSEA EXPEDITIONS TO CROSS FABLED NORTHEAST PASSAGE IN 2019 This is a preview email. SILVERSEA EXPEDITIONS TO CROSS FABLED NORTHEAST PASSAGE IN 2019 (Miami, FL -- July 17, 2018) Silversea Expeditions, the leading authority in expedition cruising, is celebrating its 10th anniversary with the introduction of its first crossing of the Northeast Passage – a remote and spectacular cruising route above the Arctic Circle. Few cruise ships have transited the passage, which follows the extreme coastlines of Asia and Europe and has long enjoyed a fabled reputation among seafarers. The intimate, all-suite Silver Explorer will become the most luxurious cruise ship to sail the route, as it passes 5,019 nautical miles of dramatic seascapes and untamed wilderness on a 25-day voyage. On August 10, 2019, the ice-class expedition ship will sail from Nome, Alaska, to Tromsø, Norway, on a once-in-a-lifetime explorative journey through this challenging region. "In this special anniversary year, which marks Silversea's decade of ultra-luxury expedition cruising, we're particularly thrilled to announce our inaugural crossing of the Northeast Passage," says Conrad Combrink, Silversea's Senior Vice President of Strategic Development for Expeditions and Experiences. "Continuing our legacy of exploration, this epic Arctic passage will take guests across the top of Asia and Europe to discover extraordinary landscapes, unique cultures and rare animal species, while enjoying the comfort of Silversea's ultra-luxury Silver Explorer." One of Silversea's most ambitious expeditions to date, the journey will encompass the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Wrangel Island, where polar bears and walruses roam and migratory birds nest; Champ Island, known for the large, mysterious stone spheres that dot its otherworldly landscape; Tikhaya Bay's Rubini Rock, with its stunning basalt columns; and the archipelago of Severnaya Zemlya, famous for its impressive fjords and majestic glaciers.
