Pius Ix and the Change in Papal Authority in the Nineteenth Century
ABSTRACT ONE MAN’S STRUGGLE: PIUS IX AND THE CHANGE IN PAPAL AUTHORITY IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Andrew Paul Dinovo This thesis examines papal authority in the nineteenth century in three sections. The first examines papal issues within the world at large, specifically those that focus on the role of the Church within the political state. The second section concentrates on the authority of Pius IX on the Italian peninsula in the mid-nineteenth century. The third and final section of the thesis focuses on the inevitable loss of the Papal States within the context of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870. Select papal encyclicals from 1859 to 1871 and the official documents of the Vatican Council of 1869-1870 are examined in light of their relevance to the change in the nature of papal authority. Supplementing these changes is a variety of seminal secondary sources from noted papal scholars. Ultimately, this thesis reveals that this change in papal authority became a point of contention within the Church in the twentieth century. LABOUREUR, Francesco by Federico Trastulli - Biographical Dictionary of Italians - Volume 62 (2004) The son of Massimiliano, a sculptor originally from Brussels, and of Paola Salomoni, the Laboureur was born in Rome on 11 November. 1767. He was baptized in the parish of S. Lorenzo in Lucina with the names of Francesco, Filippo and Simone (Rome, Arch., Historian of the Vicariate, S. Lorenzo in Lucina, Liber baptizatorum, 32, c 127v); the fact that the Laboureur was better known as Francesco Massimiliano, or "Cavalier Massimiliano" after the conferral of the knighthood of the papal order of the Golden Spur, has generated confusion regarding the news concerning the biography and the works referable to him, to his father and son Alessandro Massimiliano. The Laboureur devoted himself early to sculpture, learning the rudiments in the family; he attended the courses of the Accademia di S. Luca, obtaining the second place at the Clementino Prize of 1783. His fortune in the Roman environment was linked to the figure of the French F. Cacault, minister plenipotentiary in Rome as well as great patron, who already in a letter of 1801 signaled to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ch.-M. de Talleyrand, the excellent workmanship of a marble bust of Napoleon who commissioned the sculptor, part of a larger group of works he collected, now at the Musée des beaux-arts in Nantes. There is news about the working of a second bust of Bonaparte in another letter from Cacault, announcing how he had in mind to make the Laboureur also a colossal statue of Napoleon, at the time the first consul. -

Lorenzo Botrugno Gasparri ed i rapporti con il Regno Unito nel pontificato di Pio XI Spunti per la ricerca a partire dalle sessioni della Congregazione degli Affari Ecclesiastici Straordinari Abstract Through unpublished documentary sources – the minutes of the meetings of the Sacred Congregation of Extraordinary Ecclesiastical Affairs – the essay aims to illustrate Pietro Gasparri’s privileged perspective over anglo-vatican relations. While mainly focused on his period as Cardinal Secretary of State of Pius XI (1922–1930), some hints will also be given to his tenure of office during the pontificate of Benedict XV, as well as to Consalvi’s and Rampolla’s influence on his way of perceiving British matters. West Bohemian Historical Review X | 2020 | 2 Austria and the Papal States in the Context of the Italian Liberal-national Movement, 1838–18481 Daniel Martínek* The aim of the study is to analyse Austro-papal relations in the period 1838–1848 in the context of the Italian liberal-national movement. The reactionary, backward, absolutist regime of the papal government had often been the cause of the crises in the Papal States in the pre-March period, with the most significant one being in 1831, when it was only through Austrian military intervention that the papal regime survived. The papal government was unwilling to change the course of its internal policy and transform the Papal States for the sake of both its subjects and its government. Therefore, when it came to reforming the papal regime, Metternich’s lifelong advising of the Pope was like beating a dead horse. Austria’s readiness to intervene militarily whenever requested by the Pope was the most important part of Metternich’s diplomatic passivity within his papal policy during the 1840s, although none of the local uprisings in this period required the intervention of Austrian troops. The change in the Austrian chancellor’s approach to Rome emerged because of the reform course of Pius IX, who was elected Pope in the summer of 1846. The Pope’s utter disinterest and opposition to Austria after 1846 eventually resulted in the ultimate fall of Metternich’s papal policy.
