    AMERICANS ON MISSION TOGETHER 1806-1865 CHAPTER 4 OVER THE MOUNTAINS TO KENTUCKY In 1788 John Carroll, who would be consecrated Bishop of Baltimore two years later, expressed the earliest known desire that the Dominican friars should form an American foundation of the Order. In response to Philadelphia Catholics who sought the ministry of Francis Antoninus Fleming, O.P., Carroll drafted an affirmative but cautious reply, colored by his experience with vagabond priests. At its close he wrote, "If Mr. Fleming be inclined to attempt an establishment for his order in Philadelphia, or any of the United States, they shall have every encouragement I can give as long as I retain any authority"[1] But Fleming died of yellow fever in 1793, and during his short ministry no Dominican establishment was formed. Bishop Carroll did not give up. In May, 1796, he informed John Troy, Dominican Archbishop of Dublin, his regular correspondent, that the Irish Augustinians were forming a province in Philadelphia.[2] But hearing no more on the subject, he left it in abeyance for more than five years. Then in 1802 a proposal came from a new source: the English province of the Friars Preachers; or more precisely, from a single member of that province. And Bishop Carroll, consistent in his desire for the good of the nascent American Church, turned with interest toward this new possibility. Powyższy wzgląd, a nie mniej okoliczność, iż post factum uda- ło się dotrzeć do pewnych jeszcze świadectw źródłowych, pozwalających na uszczegółowienie dotychczas poczynionych w owym względzie usta- leń, skłania do pochylenia się nad tytułową tematyką i zaprezentowania jej w formie odrębnego artykułu, dzięki czemu na przyszłość nie będzie zachodziła konieczność poszukiwania rozproszonych informacji w rzeczo- nej materii w literaturze przedmiotu (w tym we wspomnianej wyżej edy- cji). Tak też w pierwszej kolejności dokonamy poniżej zebrania podstawo- wych informacji odnośnie do sakry każdego spośród interesujących nas hierarchów (data, miejsce, główny konsekrator, współkonsekratorzy), by następnie przyporządkować wszystkich tych biskupów do wyróżnianych w literaturze przedmiotu linii („rodzin”) sukcesji święceń. Całość wywo- dów zaopatrzona zostanie w zawarte w przypisach stosowne wskazania bi- bliograficzne, informujące o podstawie źródłowej tudzież o istniejących opracowaniach, w których mowa jest o danym fakcie, czego we wspo- minanej publikacji z roku 2006 zasadniczo brakowało (znalazły się tam 1 K.R. Prokop, Pasterze i rządcy diecezji mińskiej, pińskiej i drohiczyńskiej, Drohiczyn 2006 (wspomniane schematy sukcesji znajdują się tamże na s. 299–300). 361 Krzysztof R. (Pope Pius IX and Pope Leo XIII) András Jancsó Danube Institute – March 2021 Introduction On January 16, 2021, the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU), held its leadership election which was won by Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia Armin Laschet. Prior to the election, the website of the German Catholic Church showcased its CDU leadership candidates with the title “Three Catholic Races”, but highlighting at the same time that Laschet was probably the “most Catholic” out of all the candidates. According to the article, Laschet is connected to the Catholic Church in all areas of life, be it education, student union, editing an diocesan newspaper, or administering a Catholic publishing house. It is noted that, as Minister- President, he refrained from direct state interference as regards religious freedom during the pandemic, and was even received by Pope Francis during a private audience (Scholz, 2021). Nonetheless, following the election, the Catholic daily newspaper Die Tagespost reported that there was some disappointment in the CDU’s Saxon and Thuringian Catholic working groups noting that Friedrich Mertz was not the one to be elected as leader of the CDU. Dissatisfaction is clearly due to political and non-religious differences. Both Mathias Kretschmer, a Saxon, and Claudia Heber, chairperson of the Thuringian Catholic working group, highlighted Mertz’s economic competence. However, after the election, Kretschmer expressed concern about whether Catholics are still supporters of CDU at all. He once again stressed the need to clarify the meaning of the letter “C” in CDU when addressing issues like family policy, protection of life, and creation protection (Die Tagespost, 2021).

    CCHA, Historical Studies, 58 (1991), 99-114 Fifteen Years in the Propaganda and Other Roman Archives, 1975-1990: Was It Worth It? by Luca Codignola Universita di Genova Over the past fifteen years, an array of calendars, inventories and finding aids have been produced that have thrown much new light on the relations between North America and the Holy See, on the development of the Catholic community on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean, and on the history of English- and French-speaking North America as a whole. These are due to a number of researchers, both Italian and Canadian, who have systematically investigated the Roman ecclesiastical archives with the constant and unfailing assistance from the National Archives of Canada, the Université Saint-Paul, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. These researchers are Monique Benoit, Luigi Bruti Liberati, Giovanni Pizzorusso, Gabriele P. Scardellato, Matteo Sanfilippo, Nicoletta Serio, and this writer.
