[email protected] Jarmo Matikainen, the Finnish coach in charge of women’s international football in Wales, has announced that he is to return to his native in March 2014. During his four years with Wales, Jarmo has seen the women’s national team reach its highest ever FIFA ranking and has been a part of the first ever UEFA tournament on Welsh soil with the hosting of the UEFA Women’s Under 19 finals in the summer of 2013. There has also been a significant development in the quality at all levels of the women’s game in Wales. “ have really enjoyed my time in Wales. It has been a fantastic challenge and experience both on and off the field.” said Jarmo. “To host the Under-19 finals was a tremendous occasion and the event was a great success. I have made some great friends during my time with Wales and would like to thank the FAW for their support. I hope the women’s game continues to go from strength to strength in this country. “Players, coaches and Welsh football people have been brilliant to work with. Their passion and commitment has always been a delight and a source of strength. The Welsh sense of humour is like the Finnish, unique, and I have felt very familiar with it. I am very grateful to have been part of the Welsh football family.” Jonathan Ford, the Chief Executive of the FAW said: “Jarmo has made a huge contribution to the women’s game in Wales. He has improved the quality at all levels on and off the field. He has brought a new level of professionalism into the women’s game in terms of facilities, preparation and results. “We wish him all the best in his future career and fully understand the reasons behind his decision to return to Finland to see more of his family.” The FAW are discussing with Jarmo the possibility of his involvement in the senior women’s team and their remaining matches in the World Cup qualifying campaign. Jarmo Matikainen officially took over as Head Coach of the Wales team in October 2010 and started off with a bang, his first match in charge being an 8-1 victory over Bulgaria in friendly the following month. In his first qualifying tournament in charge, for the Euro 2013 Finals, Wales finished in third place in their group and picked up a notable 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland as well as a 2-2 draw in . They remained in contention for a play-off place until a narrow 2-1 defeat in their return meeting with Scotland in the final group match. They have started off well in their World Cup qualifying group with wins over Belarus and Montenegro whilst giving a good account of themselves when going down to a narrow 2-0 defeat to group leaders England. Matikainen has been in charge of all of the Welsh women’s teams and has overseen the rise of a host of players from youth level to the senior squad. He took charge of the Under-19 team as they hosted the UEFA Under-19 Championship Finals last August and although they were beaten in all three of their group games, the team acquitted themselves well in a tough group which included both finalists. [email protected] Aston Villa have announced a new management set up as they get ready for their first season in the newly formed FA WSL2. Ron Mellor has been brought in as manager, taking the lead role in getting the team ready for the season, which runs over the summer months from April to October. Joe Hunt, FA Women’s Premier League Cup winning manager from the previous campaign, will continue to support the team with the role of Head Coach alongside Karl Fellows. Natalie Courtney, Ant Bosson and Andrew Colley will all continue in their roles as assistant manager, physiotherapist and goalkeeping coach respectively. Anders Braastad will also join the staff as sports science coach while Martin Harrison comes in as general manager to oversee the day-to-day running of the club. Hunt, who has overseen the changes, said: "I'm over the moon that Ron has agreed to come on board with us. He is very highly recommended. Ron will add a new dimension to us. He will help the development of Karl and I as coaches with all his knowledge and experience. "He will take charge of all team affairs, dictating training sessions and matchday operations. He has some great ideas but is also comfortable with how we play already and where we want to go. "Already Ron has shown a massive interest in our female section overall, working with the Under-15s team. Even though we have now moved to Super League we still intend to produce our own players from within our Centre of Excellence. This has always been our focus. We are not reliant on other clubs to produce players for us. "The future is very promising for us. Within the last month, we've had a great turn out for the national teams. A total of fourteen players have gone away at Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 levels - twelve of them with England and two with Wales." Mellor added: "It goes without saying that I am very much looking forward to joining the management team for Villa Ladies. It should be an exciting journey for us as we embark on our first season in the Super League." Before their Super League campaign begins, Mellor’s first match in charge of the club will be in the FA Women's Cup Third Round with a home encounter with Doncaster Rovers Belles on Sunday February 9, kick-off at 2pm. The match will be played at their new ground at Coles Lane, the home of Sutton Coldfield Town.

Millwall Lionesses are delighted to announce the double signing of Sophie Perry and Kim Stenning from Brighton & Hove Albion. Sophie, a Republic of Ireland International, joins Millwall as a very promising attack minded full back, while Kim joins to bolster the teams attacking options. Stenning explained her decision to move to Millwall: "Over the last couple of years I have become more confident in my football and enjoyed it. I knew I always wanted to play at a higher level and I believe I have achieved this with my move to Millwall. "I am hard working and never give up and hope that I can be an asset to the team by scoring goals and being a team player. "My ambitions are to be as fit and focused as I can possibly be for the new season. I can see the quality of players being signed and can tell already that we will be a team that's hard to beat! I look forward to the upcoming season." Lionesses' manager, Alberto Kurti, stated: "I am happy that both players have decided to come and be part of this wonderful group of players. Kim and Sophie are exceptionally experienced players and they will add quality to the squad. "Kim is a natural finisher and she has been a lethal in front of goal for the last few years and she has settled in really well with the squad. Sophie brings the professional approach to the group, she is an established international with Ireland and to be at the top her game for so long it shows her determination and attitude to succeed." An experienced international, Sophie Perry, was quoted saying: "When I went to train with Millwall, there was a positive buzz around the place which made me feel welcome. It was clear from the players and staff that everybody believes Millwall have the potential to do well in the Super League. "From looking at some of the signings made already and the experience they are bringing with them it's clear to see the club are pushing for promotion. I have World Cup qualifiers coming up this year with the Republic of Ireland, so I will be hoping to play well at club level and country." Both signings will be available for the Lionesses' first competitive match against Reading FC Women on Sunday 9th February in the FA Women's Cup Third Round. [email protected] Southern Division Cardiff City Ladies have taken over as the new leaders of the Southern Division following a 9-1 victory over Chesham Utd. The South Wales side required an eight-goal margin of victory in order to replace Gillingham at the top and they were sent on their way when Kelly Aldridge bagged a first half hat-trick with Naomi Clipston also on the scoresheet. After the break, Aldridge netted a fourth and Clipston her second, before Nicola Cousins scored the seventh goal on the hour mark. Substitutes Cori Williams and Zoe Atkins rounded off the scoring to help Cardiff step up their title challenge. Brighton & Hove Albion and Tottenham Hotspur meanwhile battled out a 1-1 draw in the other match played. The two teams had met seven days earlier in the FA Women's Cup with Brighton narrowly winning on that occasion, but this time it took a late equaliser from Kirsty Barton to earn the Seagulls a share of the spoils after Tottenham had led from the half hour mark through a Wendy Martin goal. * No matches were played in the Northern Division on Sunday.

[email protected] Two first half goals saw Derby County record a 2-0 victory over Newcastle Utd which takes them into the Third Round of the F.A.Women's Cup. The tie had been switched to St George's Park due to the weather and it was Derby who took the lead after nine minutes when Hannah Ward broke through to score. Derby goalkeeper Sarah Morgan saved a penalty to keep her side in front and shortly afterwards, Paige Crossman headed in the second goal from a corner. After the break, Newcastle worked hard to try and get back in the game but Morgan was in great form while Natalie Henderson and Elizabeth Fraser both hit the bar. Derby saw the game out and will travel to play Crystal Palace in the next round. Mlton Keynes Dons’ Emily Mann is challeged by Katie Flack of Charlton Athletic (www.jamesprickett.co.uk). Middlesbrough also went through by running out 4-0 winners over Tranmere Rovers. Goals from Emily Scott, Sarah Manning, Jenny Duffy and Kenzie Parkes helped end the hopes of their fellow Northern Combination side and earn 'Boro a Third Round trip to Blackburn Rovers. Charlton Athletic were the other winners on the day, two strikes from Charley Clifford and a Kit Graham goal giving them a 3-0 victory over Milton Keynes Dons (see match report). Charlton will now host either Sheffield FC or Liverpool Feds. There are still eight Second Round ties still to be played after the weather intervened for the second week in a row, and they are set once again to be played this coming Sunday.

Rachel Yankey has signed a new contract with Arsenal. The 34-year-old forward first featured for the Gunners in 1996 and remains a key part of 's squad. Her pace and crossing abilities helped her side to an FA Women's Cup and Continental Cup double last term. Yankey became England's most capped player in 2013 and was included on the New Year Honours list for a second time this month when she was awarded an OBE for services to women's football. General manager Vic Akers said: "It is great news Rachel has committed her future to the club. She remains a key part of the team and her ability and experience will be invaluable in the season ahead." Yankey added: "I'm very pleased to have agreed a new contract. As a lifelong Arsenal fan, I've always been incredibly proud to represent the Club, and it's great to have the chance to continue to do so." The winger has been with the Gunners since 2005 having had spells away with Fulham - as a member of their full time professional team - and City. She has won every domestic honour on a number of occasions and was a part of Arsenal’s ‘Grand Slam’ winning team in 2006-07. [email protected] Bristol Academy Women's Football Club has unveiled Melbourne Victory's Dave Edmondson as their new head coach. Edmondson was appointed following the departure of , who took up the role as England Women's National Team Manager in December. Dave Edmondson joins the Vixens following their most successful season in the club's history, finishing runners up in the FA Cup Final against Arsenal in May and capping a superb season by finishing second in the 2013 WSL season which qualified them for the 2014/15 UEFA Women's Champions League. Edmondson will join the squad in time for pre-season training before the new season begins in April 2014. Edmondson was born in Manchester, but has earned an outstanding reputation in New Zealand and Australia because of his ability to develop young players. Edmondson was at the helm when New Zealand became Oceania Champions at U17's and oversaw their U17 World Cup side in 2010. This experience will be invaluable at Bristol Academy who are renowned for their commitment to developing home-grown talent. After working with New Zealand, Edmondson was appointed Head of Women's Football in South Australia and Head Coach of Adalaide in the Australian W-League - the equivalent of the FA Women's Super League. Further promotion in 2013 found Edmondson as Technical Director of Football in Victoria, a post which placed him in charge of all football in the Australian state and Head Coach of Melbourne Victory who are sitting at the top of the league along with Sydney FC, with three games to play. President of Bristol Academy WFC Kevin Hamblin commented: "We had some over 100 applications, it was a difficult job to reduce these to six candidates who were invited to an interview. In the end it was clear that the right fit would be Dave because of his experience overseas working with elite players which meant that he could come and look after the first team and more importantly make sure that every phase of the athlete pathway is as robust as it can be." Speaking about what he can bring to the team, Dave Edmondson said: "I applied for the Bristol job as it offered the type of club structure and development opportunities that I believe are required to be successful. Having experienced the women's game both in New Zealand and Australia, coaching teams at the FIFA under 17's World Cup and in the very competitive Westfield W League, “I have a good knowledge of the developments in the women's game around the world. In particular the technical, possession based playing style of the Asian teams, allied to the very athletic and physical Australian and New Zealand styles elements of both which I will bring to Bristol." Edmondson arrives in Bristol at the beginning of February to build on the platform created by his predecessor and to take on the challenges of an ever strengthening league. With WSL teams adding depth to their squads with big close season signings, Edmondson's knowledge and experience within the female game could be a decisive factor for the Vixens in the coming season. [email protected] Charlton Athletic 3 Milton Keynes Dons 0 Charlton Athletic moved into the Third Round of the FA Women's Cup with a 3-0 home win over Milton Keynes Dons. Three long distance second half strikes, two from Charley Clifford and one from Kit Graham saw Charlton to a margin of victory which had looked unlikely after a tightly contested first period, in which the South East Combination League visitors had frustrated the hosts and had fashioned some good attacks of their own. Neither team had played in over a month and the opening exchanges were a reflection of the weather- enforced inactivity with posession turning over frequently and defences dominating. Sam Pittuck had the first effort Lil Stanton heads clear from Clare Rogers on goal with her header from Leigh Houlihan's cross being (www.jamesprickett.co.uk). well held by Dons keeper Emma Kirby. On 13 minutes, Charly Wright had a free kick blocked by the Charlton defensive wall and Heather McDonnell hit a low shot from the rebound which Megen Lynch turned away for a corner. Kate Hardaker went very close for the home team with a deflected shot just over the bar on 16 minutes but MK were getting a good share of the ball and competing well all over the pitch. Pittuck nearly found a way through on 31 and 45 minutes but was foiled firstly by Clare Hollingsworth's tackle then by a brave save from Kirby. It seemed that fresh ideas and an increase in the pace of attacking moves might be needed to break down the visitors' resistance. In fact, it was a sweetly hit 30-yard shot out of nothing from Clifford which broke the deadlock on 48 minutes. The same player doubled the lead five minutes later with a well placed 20-yard free kick from the middle of the goal which Kirby could only help into the net. Lil Stanton had a good effort turned away by Lynch as Dons rallied but Charlton continued their long range shooting policy, Clifford going close to her hat-trick on 64 minutes, then Pittuck turning and firing inches wide from 25 yards. In between Graham had a header well saved by Kirby from a free kick and Hollingsworth made another fine last ditch interception to deny Clare Rogers a sight of goal. A flurry of substitutions did little to alter the flow of the match as Charlton grew in fluency and confidence, forcing their opponents to defend for much of the final half hour. Graham capped a very busy display with a fine effort in the final minute, working her way into a shooting position 25 yards from goal, then hitting the ball over Kirby and in off the underside of the bar for a three-goal margin of victory. Charlton Athletic will contest a Third Round home tie with either Sheffield FC, leaders of the Northern Division of the FA Women's Premier League, or Liverpool Feds of the Northern Combination who will have a third try at staging their match next Sunday. Milton Keynes Dons, third in the South East Combination table, showed why they are having a good season with a well organised and spirited display. [email protected] England 1 (Aluko 10) Norway 1 (Bjaneso 87) Melissa Bjaneso's 87th minute header denied England victory in Mark Sampson's first game in charge. The 31-year-old replaced in December and 's tenth minute goal was almost enough to defeat Euro 2013 runners-up Norway in La Manga. But Bjaneso's late intervention denied Sampson that privilege although he can still be satisfied with the manner of his team's performance, as they certainly did enough to win the game. The new Head Coach gave a senior team debut to left back and he handed the captain's armband to , though he won't make a decision on his permanent skipper until after the Cyprus Cup in March. In all, he made four changes from England's last game, a 4-0 World Cup qualifying win in Turkey in October. made her first appearance since March 2010, replacing up front, Houghton came in for , Stokes for Sophie Bradley and for . The Three Lions started the better of the two sides, with Nobbs and Carney firing shots off target early on and it took just ten minutes for Aluko to score the first goal of Sampson's reign. The Chelsea attacker drove into the box after collecting Carney's pass, cut back onto her right foot and bent a shot towards the far corner, and Norway's 17-year-old debutant goalkeeper Cecile Fiskarstrand was beaten after the ball deflected off her captain Trine Ronning and looped into the net. The game became a bit disjointed after the opener, but stayed alert and pulled off a top class reaction save to deny from close range midway through the first half. Sampson's new side brushed off that scare as cracked a shot inches wide of the post and Nobbs forced Fiskarstrand to parry away a fierce 25-yard drive. Ronning almost had the misfortune of deflecting another shot into her own net in an attempt to clear Nobbs's right wing cross just before the break, but the ball crept just wide of the far post. Norway predictably started the second half on the front foot with Thorsnes shooting narrowly wide on 53 minutes and forcing Bardsley to turn an angled drive over the bar shortly after. Sanderson then came close to doubling England's lead on the hour mark after being found by Stokes' deep, left wing cross but her header was well saved by Fiskarstrand. The European finalists came again though, and after Nobbs' attempted through ball to substitute White was cut out, Norway started a counter attack, leading to Ada Stolmso Hegerberg calling Bardsley into action for the third time. Manchester City's new signing stood firm and repelled the effort at her near post. However they did manage to find a late equaliser through substitute Bjaneso, who headed home a right sided corner from ten yards out. England could still have won the game in the dying embers, as Houghton shot wide and White struck an overhead kick just over the bar. It wasn't to be however and Sampson opens his international account with a credible draw against top quality opposition. [email protected] New England coach Mark Sampson admitted he was happy with the week in Spain with his new squad, whom he took charge of for the first time since his appointment last month. England drew 1-1 with Norway in Sampson’s first match at the helm and he said: “In terms of the football, [I am] really pleased. We asked the girls to play a slightly different way and they really embraced the concepts and gave it a right good go. “In terms of the performance, I’m delighted there are so many positives we can take into the Cyprus Cup.” Steph Houghton was named captain for Mark Sampson’s first game and she was satisfied with the team's display. She said: “Considering it was our first game of the season under new management, I think we did well. “The girls are disappointed to concede so late but overall in our performance I think we did enough to win the game. “To concede a goal in the last five minutes after being in control for most of the game is hard to take. But it’s something we can learn from.” The 25-year-old revealed to TheFA.com that her team mates have embraced Sampson’s ideas during his first week in situ and has already identified areas where she believes they can improve. Houghton added: “We want to play a pressing game and press from the front. All the girls put that into place and we managed to do that for 90 minutes. “Everyone’s worked hard on the training ground, everyone has taken his ideas on board and now it’s all about progressing and learning as we go.” With Sampson not set to name his permanent captain until after the Cyprus Cup in March, he has identified a few candidates for the role, of which Houghton is one, and the Manchester City player spoke with great pride at donning the Three Lions armband for the first time. She explained: “I was really surprised, but really honoured and humbled to lead the team out. “It’s something that you dream of as a kid and it has come true today, but the most important thing was that the team played well.”

The Cyprus Cup Groups have been confirmed for this year’s friendly invitation tournament which takes place from 5th-12th March. Twelve international teams will take part in the seventh competition in Cyprus. England won the tournament last year and have been placed in Group A to face Italy, Finland and last year’s losing finalists Canada. In Group B, Australia will meet Holland, France and Scotland while in Group C, South Korea face New Zealand Switzerland and the Republic of Ireland Group A: England, Italy, Finland, Canada Group B: Australia, Holland, France, Scotland Group C: South Korea, New Zealand, Switzerland, Republic of Ireland At a similar time, the England Under-23 side will head to La Manga to face Sweden, Germany and Japan in an Under-23 international friendly tournament. The two other nations competing in the six-team event are Norway and the USA. England’s first game is against Sweden on 1st March, before taking on Germany two days later and finishing up by playing Japan on 5th March. [email protected] Oxford United are pleased to announce the signings of Kayleigh Hines and goalkeeper Demi Lambourne ahead of the start of their debut campaign in the FA Women’s Super League 2 in March. Hines joins the club on a one-year deal with the option of a further year’s extension, having previously played in the Arsenal Academy and for Reading, as well as a spell at American side Millburn Magic. Kayleigh was delighted to be at the club: “I had the opportunity to come to Oxford, which was something that I always wanted to do. I just came along to start the new season, which I intended to do anyway and it was just a bonus that they got approved for the WSL. It’s a very good opportunity and something I’m looking forward to.” Previously with Reading, Demi Lambourne has progressed through the Oxford youth system and has represented England at Under-19 level. She said: “We started off as quite a small club and hadn’t been running that long, but I think it’s grown and become a really good set-up. That’s purely why I moved to Oxford, as the set up was really good. “It’s going to be a step up but I think we can only grow from where we are now. It’s very professional, the training sessions are very hard but obviously we’re going to be ready for the season when it starts.” With the players returning for pre-season training last week manager Richard Blackmore said he was pleased to see the squad taking shape. “Demi’s a goalkeeper who’s come up through the youth system and gone into the Academy and she’s earned her first senior contract, which is always really good,” he said. “She’s a very, very good goalkeeper and she’ll be competing for a first team place. “Kayleigh’s been a long-term target for us. She’s a defensive midfielder, very hard- working, technically very good and again she’ll be a big asset for us through the season when we do make that step up to the WSL2.” Oxford are also delighted to announce that club captain Sahara Osborne-Ricketts has signed a new deal which will keep her at the club for the next year, with the option of a further one-year extension. The 22-year-old former Reading, Arsenal and Watford centre-back captained United to the South West Combination title last season and said she is looking forward to continuing the club's success in the FA Women's Super League. “I'm pleased to have signed another deal with Oxford,” she said. “Obviously, it's a great step for me as we're going to be in the Super League next year and I just can't wait to get started and playing now. The steps the club took to get us into the Super League have been massive, it's very professional and all the hard work behind the scenes is just incredible. I'm just happy to be part of a club like this.” Manager Richard Blackmore was pleased to see Sahara commit her future to the club. He said: “She was last year's captain and she has good experience in the national Women's Premier League as well, so she's an influential player for us. “She's a good leader, she's a very good communicator, she does lead by example and she works exceptionally hard on the pitch. She just wants to win and she is a winner.”

Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper Natalie Hall emerged as her side’s heroine as the reached the semi finals of the Birmingham County Cup. The 25-year-old saved two penalties and made a string of great saves during normal time as Wolves defeated Solihull Ladies 3-1 on a shootout after the sides had finished level at 1-1 after extra time. Lauren Williams had scored for Wolves during open play and she was also successful from the penalty spot along with Laura McQuilkin and Dani Selmes. Claire Hakeman and Sally Stanton both made comebacks for Wolves having re-signed for the club recently whilst Becky Hall continued her return to action following a knee injury. Wolves are the only side through to the semi finals so far and they will face a bit of a wait before finally discovering who their opponents in the last four will be. Coventrians and Leafield Athletic will make another attempt to play their Third Round tie this week for the right to play Copsewood (Coventry) in the quarter finals, the winners of which will be up against Wolves. [email protected] Midland Combination Leicester City Ladies were unable to make any impression on the six point gap behind table toppers Copsewood (Coventry) as they were beaten 2-0 by Radcliffe Olympic. Lauren Bartle gave Radcliffe the lead on the half hour mark, with Christina Brewer adding the second after the interval to take her side out of the bottom three. Loughborough Students are up into third place, their highest position of the season to date, following their 10-1 victory over Curzon Ashton. Avilla Bergin, Adele Sale and Laura Williams all bagged hat-tricks for the students with Francesca Sullivan completing their tally, Masa Butler scoring a late consolation for Curzon. Rotherham Utd are in fifth but only three points off second place after running out 7-2 winners away to Loughborough Foxes. Charley Evans and Nat Shaw each scored twice along with Amy Pollock, Kirsty-Louise Richardson and Jade Tilling, while the home side replied through Nancy Miles and Laura Steele. South West Combination The only match in the league to survive the weather on Sunday was the top of the table clash and it was leaders Swindon Town who triumphed 4-0 over Forest Green Rovers to extend their advantage at the top to eight points. Beth Thompson and Georgia Walters each scored twice to earn the Wiltshire side their fifth victory in a row.

Forest Green 0 Swindon 4. [email protected] Swindon Town have raced clear at the top of the South West Combination in recent weeks and underlined their good form by beating second placed Forest Green Rovers 4-0 on Sunday, their fifth league win in a row. We talked to Swindon striker Ellie Maynard and she revealed the surge of confidence that a winning run brings and the expectations at the club this season: That was a great result in a top of the table clash, how well did the team play to achieve this? It was a top performance by everyone, I don't think the management could have asked for more. Kim, Jase and Robbo worked us hard in the weeks leading up it and the girls took this attitude into the game and we really deserved the result we got. Was it ample revenge for the two defeats you suffered to Forest Green earlier in the season, when they scored three times on each occasion? I think so, obviously we all would have liked it to be more just to really show it to them and we had enough chances to make it more, but we matched what they did to us and added one more! Since those two games with Forest Green, you have won five matches on the trot. Do you think there has been any particular reason for your good form? I feel we weren't settled with a team so the management were still trying things out. Since then though, we've signed a few new players and all found our form and the more we play the better we perform. We all believe we can win this league now so we want to show how good we really are. You are now eight points clear although the teams below have games in hand. Are you confident you can keep the run going? Yes, if we all continue performing how we have recently, of course we can! If the teams below won their next games we would be one point clear, so this gives us the motivation to increase that gap and go on to win it. Who do you see as your biggest rivals in the title race? Right now I would say Plymouth, but we are yet to play Chichester who are doing alright themselves. Swindon have always been one of the better sides in the Combination, what has been the difference this time around? Being taken over by the community office made a huge difference. The encouragement and support we get now is incredible and it brings us all closer as a team which in turn improves our overall performance. This week you travel to play Southampton Saints, are you expecting a tough game down there? All the games in our league could go either way but with how we've been playing lately, I think we will get a comfortable win. With due respect to Saints there is a big difference in our league positions. If you can keep going and land the title, what do you think it would mean to the club? Winning the title is huge this season. The community have big expectations of us and we are more than capable of fulfilling them. It would mean a lot to give something back to them, seeing as they have given a lot to us this season. [email protected] Football in Oxfordshire has been severely hit by the recent wet weather, with almost all local pitches proving unplayable, but the rain has done nothing to stop Futsal play – the growing, new craze in indoor P.O.Box 72, Patchway, Bristol football. This is a massive improvement from last year when we ran it for the Contributors: first time, with only one age group with five teams James Prickett entering. The festival generated an exciting (www.jamesprickett.co.uk) atmosphere, enjoyed by players and spectators Julian Barker alike; it was a truly family event. The teams all KIPAX (www.kipax.com) competed with great energy and spirit, with Kidlington Youth FC winning at Under-14 level and Jessica Fishlock Crowmarsh Youth FC narrowly proving victorious Patrick Higgins amongst the Under-12s in an extremely close and David Potham exciting league. Both winners will play in the South East Regional Festival against other County FA Laura Montgomery winners, to be played at Surrey Sports Park. Jim Pearcy Steve Forse, coach of the narrowly defeated Kidlington Under-12s spoke for everyone when he Rachael Small thanked Oxfordshire Football Association for organising such a successful event. “The girls all Winners of the 2006 really enjoyed it and were chomping at the bit to play in every match they could. Kim Harford netted twice for Long Eaton, with Hayley Armstrong also on target. Real Utd meanwhile defeated Arnold Town 5-1 thanks to doubles from Emma James and Jodie Ellis with Rachael Wakefield adding the other. Solar Ladies returned to action in Division One North in style, running out 6-1 winners over third placed Sleaford Town to maintain their lead of twelve points at the top. Toni Hamilton was on target twice along with Lisa Cromey, Sue Green, Lottie Soar and Clodagh Summers. Notts County Development kept up the chase by scoring seven times without reply against West Bridgford. Courtney Walters hit a hat-trick for County and their other scorers were Lauren Yeomans, Anna-Marie Casey-Horton, Natasha Watson and Jasmin Bear. Faye Brown bagged herself a four-goal haul for Ruddington Village in their 10-1 success away to Retford Utd. Kelly Clayton weighed in with a brace and there was one apiece from Holly Brindley, Rebecca Graves, Emma Clarke and Clara Curtis. One match was played in Division One South, leaders Gedling Town opening up a three point advantage through a 5-0 victory over Loughborough Students (2006). Natalie Watson hit a hat-trick and she was joined on the scoresheet by Melanie McNeil and Mia Sallis. Eastern Region League Natasha Thomas scored all four goals as Lowestoft Town moved to within two points of the leadership in the Premier Division with a 4-2 victory over Stevenage Borough. Natalie Gray was on target twice for Malet Lambert along with Chamaine Pinder, Ellie Tanser and Georgie Warvill while Jaydene Venus (2) and Briony Pinchess responded for the home side. South West League Just the one match throughout the league avoided the bad weather over the weekend, in the Eastern Division where Keynsham Town Res won an entertaining affair against Cirencester Town by the odd goal in five. The Cirencester Town striker Kayleigh Oliver plays the ball past game was most notable for Suzanne Grant Keynsham Town Res full back Cara Thomas. making her comeback just seven weeks after giving birth to her first child and the Scotland international wasted no time by scoring in the opening minute. [email protected] London Bees launched themselves formally on Monday with news of a huge sponsorship agreement and kit deal. The WSL2 newcomers held an official launch at The Hive, where they will play their home matches, with Chairman Tony Kleanthous announcing a ground-breaking partnership with Stanmore College to become the club's main sponsor and official education partner, which could amount to £500,000 over three years. The sponsorship aims to aid the development of women's football and also offers a pathway for students that want to get involved in the sports industry with educational work experience. From catering to match day stewarding, The Hive will be a full training facility for those looking to pursue a career in sport. A deal has also been agreed with the German sportswear company JAKO to be the official kit supplier to the London Bees. Stanmore College offers its students a wealth of provision, an excellent experience and top class teaching from highly skilled staff. Based in Stanmore, Greater London, the college provides a range of vocational as well as academic provision. The college has grown within the sector by developing its higher education provision. Bespoke training is available to businesses (delivered in house or at business premises) and the College is also involved with apprenticeships. Commenting on the announcement, Jacqui Mace, Principal of Stanmore College, said: "Stanmore College is delighted to sponsor the London Bees. This exciting new ladies football club, which will operate from top class facilities, fits exactly with our vision to bring the very best employability skills to our students and provide the 'direct line of sight to work' which is so important for young people in today's challenging economic environment. "We hope that members of the ladies team will choose Stanmore College as their education provider as we will be able to offer a whole range of A levels, vocational courses and higher education options - not just sport! We plan to harness the excitement of the London Bees and use it for the benefit of all our students as well as making a significant contribution to the local economy and community." Tony Kleanthous, Chairman of the London Bees, said: "We are pleased to welcome Stanmore College on board as our official education partner. In Stanmore College we have a sponsor who not only values women's football, but are also committed to enhancing the women's game to a broader audience. We are very excited about the sponsorship and giving the opportunity to the students of Stanmore College to gain both work and educational opportunities with the London Bees and at The Hive. "The team crest and kit have been designed by the students of Stanmore College and we hope that students across the whole of London will come to The Hive and create a carnival atmosphere cheering on the London Bees. "Whichever team you support in London, be it Arsenal, Spurs, Chelsea or whoever, this is an independent team which carries the London name and we hope you will unite to get behind us." London Bees' first competitive match will be on Sunday 9th February when they play away to Leeds United in the Third Round of the F.A.Women's Cup. [email protected] A crisp sunny Sunday afternoon saw Holmes Park play host to the Leicestershire & Rutland FA Plate Final between Oadby & Wigston Dynamo and Heather St Johns. With both teams positioned in the top half of the East Midlands League Division One South, Oadby & Wigston knew it would be a difficult game but were up for the challenge. The game started briskly with both teams pushing forward and defending well, with little clear cut chances for either side. Towards the end of the first half Oadby & Wigston began to gain the upper hand and it was only the skill of Heather’s goalkeeper that stopped them from taking the lead. Eventually a rebound from a one-on-one with the keeper saw Kiri Herbert coolly slot the ball home to make it 1-0, and this is how it stood for the remaining ten minutes of the half. With neither team making any changes during the break, the second half saw Heather come out fighting for the equaliser but Oadby’s defence stood strong and controlled to deny Heather any clear cut chance. Both teams knew the second goal would be decisive. With set pieces and corners looking the most likely way Heather would score, Oadby & Wigston regained the upper hand in midfield and down the wings. Midway through the half, a perfect through ball and timely run down the left wing saw Victoria Bishop cut in to lob the keeper with a skilful shot, ending in the net to double Oadby & Wigston's lead. Dynamo’s continued pressure resulted in a perfectly executed header by Jess Keeling from a corner, and a second goal from Victoria Bishop killed off any chance of a comeback by Heather at 4-0. Although Oadby & Wigston eventually won comprehensively, the score didn’t reflect the attitude, skill and strength of Heather St Johns with both teams looking forward to meeting in the league.

[email protected] Cardiff Met Ladies continue to lead the way by five points in the Shared Access Welsh Women's Premier League following a 9-0 win against fourth placed Llanidloes. Robyn Pinder sent the students on their way with a fifth minute goal with Ellie Sargent, Hue Cao, Ellie Curson and Emily Allen adding further goals ahead of half time. Sargent scored her second early after the restart, before Curson netted twice more to complete her hat-trick and Chloe O'Connor grabbed the final goal in the dying minutes. Cardiff City FC consolidated themselves in second place by beating Aberystwyth Town 1-0, Hattie Powell scoring the only goal of the game on the quarter hour. Swansea City meanwhile avenged their defeat to Wrexham seven days earlier by winning

1-0 in their return meeting, courtesy of a strike from An aerial challenge between Lowri Walker of Aberystwyth Town Jodie Passmore in the 22nd minute. and Cardiff City FC’s Becky Gunther (www.atfc.org.uk). Llandudno Junction are out of the bottom three following their 4-0 success away to Northop Hall, who are still seeking their first points. Aimee Todd and Sophie Owen both scored in the five minute spell leading up to half time and after the break, a Hannah Williams own goal extended their lead and Katie Bowe rounded off the scoring. This Sunday, the semi finals of the League Cup take centre stage and league leaders Cardiff Met Ladies will be aiming to take another step towards a potential trophy ‘treble’ when they play Swansea City. Llanidloes take on Port Talbot Town in the other semi final. One match will take place in the league with Llandudno Junction and Northop Hall having their return meeting.

Louise Fors makes loan move Liverpool can confirm that Louise Fors has left the Reds to join Swedish outfit Alta IF on loan until 1st November, subject to international clearance. The Swedish international joined Liverpool Ladies in December 2012 from Western Sydney Warriors in Australia, and helped Matt Beard's team to their first league title in the club's history. Louise played a crucial role in the title winning campaign, scoring seven times in total including the vital opening goal from the penalty spot in the 2-0 victory over Bristol Academy which clinched the WSL title in the final match of the season. Steels power into last eight An unfit pitch at Niagara meant the Sheffield Rangers vs Steel City Wanderers tie in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Cup was switched to the Steels’ home ground at Davy’s with Steels, as expected, enjoying progress to the quarter finals, though County League Rangers can take great credit for restricting the margin to just 7-0 against the East Midlands League Premier Division high fliers. Cheryl Mawhood, who has been banging goals in for fun this season, bagged her sixth hat trick or better this season with the other Steels goals coming from Maria Burns, Leanne Duke, Zoe Beresford and Paris Wagstaff. Amy Blinkhorn and Ellen Smith netted hat-tricks for Doncaster Belles (Women) who proved far too strong for Edlington Royals, winning 9-1 with the other goals coming from Caitlin Dooley, Sophie Foxon-Wise and an opponent. Oughtibridge edged it 1-0 at Sheffield Utd Community Res thanks to a goal from Fern Scrivens. Leah Hardy (2) and Alicia Wasnidge netted for Handsworth who exited on penalties after a 3-3 draw at Hemsworth. Huddersfield Town, predictably, were comfortable winners in their delayed second round tie against Hepworth which ended 12-0. Free female football sessions Northampton Town Football Club is proud to launch the Female Football Development programme (FFD) with The Football League Trust. Set to play an integral role in the progression of the Women’s & Girls’ game, Northampton Town Football Club shall drive participation growth and retention, as it delivers free FFD sessions throughout 2014 and beyond. Level 2 (and above) qualified coaches will deliver FFD sessions aimed at 14-25 year-olds, in cohesion with Northants FA, Schools, Colleges and Universities to engage with fresh participants, as part of the new FA Women’s and Girls’ programme. The programme presents an investment of over £2.4m in the next two years from Sport England funding, and aims to reach over 40,000 new players. [email protected] The Football League Trust’s FFD programme is a pivotal part of this, distributing £547,000 across the country, with an ambitious target to reach 14,760 new female players through Northampton Town FC and 53 of its fellow Football League clubs. FFD’s challenge, to account for over a third of the FA’s aims, in supporting the goal to make Women’s Football the second largest team sport in the country behind men’s football, is one which The Football League Trust is relishing. Nicol Meredith, National Women’s and Girls’ Football Project Co-ordinator said: “This is a fantastic opportunity; the magnetism of our club badges within local communities matched with the passion of our coaches presents a solid foundation to deliver engaging FFD sessions. The Trust will embrace this chance, taking great pride in helping to make The FA national female goal a reality.” Mike Evans, General Manager of The Football League Trust added: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with The FA and Sport England on Female Football Development. A large number of our 72 trusts already deliver women’s and girls’ football to a very high standard, but this additional funding will allow more trusts to get involved, and allow us to service the demand that we know is out there to get more females into the game.” FFD sessions aim to provide a relaxed and welcoming football environment, with a key focus on Fun, Fitness and Friendship. Nicol Meredith said: “Whether it’s literally your first kick of a football or you’re ready to ease your way back into playing pressure free, give it a go. The social aspect plays a huge part; it’s about having a laugh with friends or people who soon will be, as team sport creates a unique bond between people from diverse backgrounds, helping to develop character, and skills transferable beyond the game. For those disillusioned by fitness, with tedious treadmills and heavy gym fees, FFD sessions offer a refreshing change, putting fun back into keeping healthy.” Matt Chart, Northampton Town FC’s Female Football Development Officer, commented: “We’re really excited to be a part of this inspiring programme, and look forward to Northampton Town FC being among the clubs at the forefront of the future female game in England. The popularity of Women’s football in our Town continues to grow, and we’re delighted that we can run fun sessions and open avenues for those who wish to progress beyond this.” To learn more about Northampton Town’s Female Football Development programme, and how you can get involved with the upcoming sessions, visit www.ntfc-fitc.co.uk. (Source: www.northantsfa.co.uk) Girls Football Skills Festival The FA Tesco Skills programme will be teaming up with the Kent FA and Gillingham FC to offer a free day of coaching and games for local girls aged 5-11. The day will offer girls the opportunity to take part in a number of structured training sessions, learning a variety of skills from passing and goalscoring to defending and goalkeeping. The players will also have plenty of chances to put this into practice with mini-soccer games running throughout the day. During the day and running alongside our groups, the Gillingham FC Under-9 Girls will be hosting a development festival which will see other pro clubs attending. Girls who are involved in the coaching sessions will have the chance to watch some of the match action during the morning. The sessions will take place on Wednesday 19th February from 10.30am – 1.30pm at the Gillingham FC Training Ground (Beechings Cross Training Ground, Grange Road, Gillingham, Kent, ME7 2UD). We are limiting bookings to 32 places so if you’re 5-11 years old and interested in taking part then all you have to do is book by contacting Pete Sayer, FA Skills Team Leader, at [email protected]. [email protected] [email protected] Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire League The top of the table clash in Division Three ended with honours even as Biggleswade Ladies and Letchworth Garden City Eagles battled out a 2-2 draw. Emily Field and Kelsey Hagland were on target for Biggleswade, who remain as leaders, while Letchworth, who would probably have been the happier side with the result, replied through Rebecca Deering and Samantha Edgar. In the other game, Evergreen Eagles scored nine without reply against AFC Kempston Town & Bedford College, spearheaded by a five-goal haul from Samantha Takis. Christie Brewer weighed in with a hat-trick and Francesca Higgins completed the scoring. Derbyshire League There was a change of leadership in Division One with Underwood Villa taking over at the top following their 7-2 victory over Glossop North End. Paige Rogers bagged a hat-trick for Underwood, who still boast an unbeaten record, Laura Hartshorne added a brace and there was one apiece from Charlotte Worth and Jessica Nicole. In Division Two, Castle Donnington stretched their lead to four points after they won 2-1 away to LFC Buxton with goals from Kelly Hyland and Cara Turner. East Riding League Courts City are closing in on the league title and require just two more points from their final four games after they defeated AFC Tickton 4-0. Demi Thomas scored twice, with Laura Lane and Leona Hanson adding the others to hand Courts their tenth win in a row. AFC Preston can no longer win the league but remain in the running for second place after a Paige Conlan brace and Ellie Worsley gave them a 3-1 success away to Kingston Harriers. South Cave meanwhile won 5-1 against Pinefleet Wolfreton thanks to an Olivia Key hat-trick, Catherine Shanks and Emma Osborne. In Division Two, Chloe Bennett and Danielle-Louise Kendrick each netted four-goal hauls, while Sian Hughes and Natalie Woodward both scored hat-tricks with Jess Coyne also on target for Filey Ladies in their emphatic win over Holme Rovers. Hull University were 6-2 victors away to Hornsea Sporting who found the net through Harriet Selby and Kaydie Thompson. Gloucestershire League The fixture schedule in the league was badly affected on Sunday and indeed only one match managed to go ahead. In Division Two, St Nicholas Res and Abbeymead Rovers met each other and battled out a goalless draw which did neither team any favours in their quest for a promotion place. North Riding League Redcar Town stay on top of the table on goal difference but lost their unbeaten record, going down to a 6-1 reverse at the hands of York City Res. Hollie Smith scored twice for City along with Jess Barnes, Rachel Harding, Natasha Mortimer and Louise Ross while Redcar's consolation came from Gabrielle Wordsworth. Linzie Hanson, Amber Coakley and Kimberley Skiba scored the goals as Guisborough Town won 3-1 at Brompton whilst Huntington defeated York St John's 11-1. Jo Lavery, Gemma Martin and Elisha Griffiths each scored twice for Huntington and they were joined on the scoresheet by Susy Grimwood, Debbie Martin, Kelly White, Claire Gallagher and Donna Cairns. Northamptonshire League Moulton Ladies closed the gap on league leaders Burton Park Wanderers to five points with a 5-4 win against Netherton Utd, who scored through Jenna Nairn (2), Kerry Camwell and Zoe Watkins. Thrapston Town have returned to the top of Division Two after winning 5-0 away to Thorplands Ladies, thanks to Amelia Boddington, Bethan Nunley, Hannah Pendred, Chloe Jeffs and an own goal.
