MATCH REPORT

James Franklyn scored a sublime opening first half goal and then laid on an FA Vase quarter-final tie clinching second for Harry Sargeant as United Services Portsmouth pulled off a nail biting backs-to-the-wall victory over fancied Flackwell Heath writes Mike Vimpany. Their win owed much to resolute defending for much of the second half as they absorbed wave after wave of Flackwell pressure, denying the visitors any real clear-cut chances. The Tier 6 Wessex League Division1 side have knocked out higher division opposition in every round and beating the Hellenic League high-fliers was arguably the best of the lot. US manager Glenn Turnbull admitted he was “mentally exhausted” after the game, almost kicking every ball as his team defended as if their lives depended on it. “It was a good game to watch, especially for the neutral and Flackwell were the best side we’ve played against, full of good players. “I thought we deserved our half-time lead, but they were obviously going to come at us after the break. “We were camped in our own half for a lot of the time, but everything was controlled and I don’t really think they got any more than one clear shot away at our goal. “We had a lot of leaders out there and Sarge (Harry Sargeant) was immense, as was Tom Jeffes whose eye was so swollen, he looked as though he’d been in a boxing bout.” A slippery surface made conditions ideal, with Flackwell Heath calling the early tune, but often wasting the final ball. They missed the first chance too, former Reading Academy winger Khalid Simmo cutting in from the left and half-hitting a shot which US goalkeeper Tom Price turned around the post for a corner. But Services gradually grew into the contest and 32 minutes in took the lead with a goal by the talismanic Franklyn worthy of any occasion. Jack Chandler hoisted the ball down field towards FRANKLYN, who allowed it to drop over his right shoulder. He controlled the ball with the outside of his right boot and, with ice cool precision, sent a perfect lob over the advancing Aaron Watkins. It was a gem. United Services were forced to defend for the remainder of the half but while Flackwell Heath huffed and puffed, the Portsmouth hosts almost doubled their lead when Jeffes smacked a flag-kick header against the visitors’ crossbar. Admiral Lord Nelson’s flagship HMS Victory is in dry-dock a few hundred yards from the Portsmouth Royal Navy stadium and it was almost as if United Services obeyed the famous “ expects” signal after the break. With Simmo pulling the strings, Flackwell Heath poured forward, only to be repelled time and time again – with the only real moment of danger coming when Jeffes cleared the decks after the ex-Reading youngster had got the better of Price. Flackwell forced umpteen corners, but US clung on and, four minutes from the end and totally against the flow, they bagged a second clinching goal. This time Franklyn was the creator, teeing up a far post cross, which the hugely influential SARGEANT headed down – the bounce totally deceiving Watkins on its way into the net. It was curtains for Flackwell Heath, whose manager Marcus Richardson lamented: “I felt we were the dominant side, but it was just one of those days when we couldn’t find the back of the net. “I felt that if we could get an equaliser, we would go on and win the game – but it didn’t happen.”

ADVANCE NOTICE OF ROADWORKS - A31 RINGWOOD

Those travelling to or from Bournemouth, Christchurch, Hamworthy United, Ringwood Town and Verwood Town could face a year of traffic chaos as a busy slip road onto the A31 could close for a year. Highways England plans to introduce a third lane and widen the A31 in Ringwood when works start later this year. Whilst it is appreciated that this is a long way ahead, please bookmark this in readiness as it is likely to cause a great deal of congestion locally. The works mean the westbound slip road from the Ringwood Roundabout will close in November, potentially for a whole year. This may mean drivers are forced to travel east and turning at Poulner to head West towards Bournemouth. A contraflow system will also be in place, meaning road users travelling west will move to the eastbound carriageway. The project is planned to commence in November with the reconstruction of the slip road, and then from January 2022, the A31 westbound will be closed to facilitate the reconstruction work, construction of a third lane and demolition work.”

United Services started their record breaking Vase run in the 2nd Qualifying Round on 10th October. A derby contest against AFC Portchester with a fixture that was switched to the Royals’ home. This move didn’t hamper progress as goals from Declan Seiden and Andy Todd saw the team through by the odd goal in three with a consolation strike from Rob Evans in reply. The First Round Proper saw another Premier Division side fall by the wayside with Bournemouth going down 3-1 on November 4th. It was Seiden and Todd again on target with James Franklyn also contributing a goal. Jack Kinge-Phillips netting for the Poppies. The luck of the draw pitted them against Brockenhurst and they were the third Premier Division side to fall. Goals from Franklyn and Todd on 12th December saw the hosts defeat the Badgers 2-1, Toby Bailey for the visitors. 2020 drew to a close on 19th December and it was yet another home draw in the next round, with Millbrook from Cornwall the visitors. United Services squeezed through with a best of five win. Seiden on target again- this time a first minute penalty, with Frankie Paige and Tom Jeffes adding to the tally. A Rikki Shepherd brace for the South West Peninsula Premier East outfit. There was an unexpected delay due to the Pandemic before the next tie, almost three months in fact before match day came round again on 17th April. The Victory Stadium was becoming quite a fortress and the 4th Round brought another Premier Division scalp, a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes against Christchurch was decided on the day with a 4-1 win on penalties. Franklyn again on target, with Ben Satterley for the club. Uncharted waters in more ways than one gave them an away tie at Tavistock, in the heart of Dartmoor. An emphatic 3- 1 win thanks to Seiden, Todd and Jack Chandler saw the Western League Premier Division side toppled on April 24th. Liam Prynn with the goal for the Lambs that afternoon. Last weekend another milestone was reached with another win at Burnaby Road. Franklyn and Harry Sargeant goals were enough to see off another Premier Division side, in the guise of Flackwell Heath of the Hellenic League. Saturday, 08 May 2021 Page 9 of 17

The Final was decided on penalties due to the fact that a 92nd minute equaliser was scored by AFC Bournemouth keeper, Mark Travers, who headed home a corner. No doubt this gave the Cherries a bit of a confidence booster as they went on to secure the trophy courtesy of a penalty shoot-out. Travers unsurprisingly collected the player of the match award after saving two penalties and scoring that late equaliser.

THE FA LAUNCHES ENGLAND FOOTBALL TO HARNESS THE POWER OF ENGLAND TEAMS AND INSPIRE GRASSROOTS PARTICIPATION

• The FA unveils England Football – a new home connecting the grassroots game to England’s elite. • England Football will leverage the strength and popularity of England teams to inspire future generations and positively impact grassroots participation. • New game-changing digital football hub – EnglandFootball.com – launches to make access to football easier • England Football a key pillar in the realisation of The FA’s ‘Time for Change’ strategy to serve the game and deliver football for all.

The Football Association [The FA] has this week announced the launch of England Football as the new name and visual identity to represent, unite, and promote football participation in England. England Football aims to create more chances for people to play, coach and support football and better connect the grassroots game with England’s National Teams. The new visual identity goes live today across a range of new digital products and services that underpin the development; these include:

• EnglandFootball.com – the new digital home of English football for players, fans, coaches and volunteers. A one-stop online hub across all levels of the game providing comprehensive information and access to FA participation and grassroots programmes, plus the latest learning resources and the administrative tools that make managing the grassroots game more efficient. EnglandFootball.com also becomes the number one destination to follow all England National Teams. • Find Football – a brand new digital tool from England Football helping players and parents find participation opportunities, at all levels and age groups, across the country. • My England Football – A new, free rewards programme to recognise the passion of England fans, grassroots players and volunteers accessible via EnglandFootball.com. My England Football offers money-can't-buy rewards, including the opportunity to play on the Wembley pitch, meet England players and watch them train, priority tickets, mascot places and behind-the-scenes match day access. Plus, a host of FA and partner discounts and offers.

These transformational digital services will all carry the distinctive England Football identity, characterised by a new crest giving England’s Three Lions a fresh purpose that symbolises inclusivity at all levels of football. A cub, lion and lioness unite to form the iconic England crest with no boundaries - representing everyone at every level of football across the country. The England Football brand will be integrated across popular grassroots programmes – including McDonald’s SuperKicks, Snickers Just Play, and Weetabix Wildcats – as well as FA products like The Bootroom and BT Playmaker, plus club and league administrative tools such as Full-Time. In addition to England Football’s new digital offering, The FA Charter Standard Programme is evolving to become England Football Accreditation and will serve as the gold standard for clubs and leagues that positively improves people’s football experience in England. England Football will be fully supported by the County Football Associations across the country as they continue to play a pivotal role in communicating, supporting and delivering England Football programmes at a local level. To support the launch of England Football, a film has been released capturing the essence of football in England, from the grassroots game to England’s elite. Produced by fan-first football media company, COPA90, the content depicts the diversity and inclusivity of football the length and breadth of the country, while showcasing its significance and centrality to local communities. England internationals including Azeem Amir, Demi Stokes, Harry Kane, and Marcus Rashford feature in the film, alongside portraits of grassroots heroes nationwide to demonstrate the true diversity and fabric of football in England.

Mark Bullingham, Chief Executive of The FA, said: “This is a significant change as we unite all our grassroots initiatives and programmes under one banner. England Football will harness the unique ability of the England teams to inspire future generations and positively impact participation at all levels of the game. Kids want to be the next , Harry Kane, or Raheem Sterling”. “As well as inspiring future generations, England Football’s digital tools will help us to create more opportunities to play, coach and support the game, nationwide. We want football to be For All and to play a major role in getting the country active following the impact of COVID 19 – England Football will help achieve that.”

England Football complements the role of The FA as the not-for-profit governing body of football in England. The FA continues to oversee all England international teams, across men’s, women’s, youth and disability football, as well as running FA Competitions, including the Emirates FA Cup and Vitality Women's FA Cup, and the world-class facilities of Wembley Stadium and St. George’s Park, all with a purpose to unite the game and inspire the nation.

ISLAND JOY

The Island Games have been mentioned on these pages before and they are always well run and cover a number of Sports with the Football Competition always attracting the most interest and headlines. The 2011 Games were held on the Isle of Wight and were a credit to all concerned in the organisation and daily running of all the events. The Isle of Wight has always supported the Wessex League, predominately through Newport, Cowes Sports and East Cowes Vics, though the efforts of Brading Town and Ryde Sports Saturday, 08 May 2021 Page 12 of 17

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2020/21 EDITION NUMBER 45

are well remembered; the short-lived merger between Mayflower on the Mainland and West Wight perhaps not so memorable. So it was nice to see so many Wessex Officials, referees and of course players taking a major role in the proceedings. Twenty four Islands were represented across the Sports with fifteen Islands taking part in the Mens Football Tournament. These were split into four groups, three containing four sides and one just three, and all the sides met the others in their group once with three points for a win and one for a draw- the top of each group qualifying for the semi-finals. We will deal with Group A later, instead looking first at Group B which contained Alderney, Gibraltar, The Isle of Wight and Ynys Mon (also known as Anglesey). The Isle of Wight defeated both Alderney and Anglesey 4- 0 but found Gibraltar tougher opposition before winning by the odd goal in five to ensure they topped the group – Gibraltar finished second with six points. Out of interest the Island’s eleven goals in the three matches were scored by Iain Seabrook (3), Charlie Smeeton (2), Scott Jones (2) and one apiece from Kyle Levrier, Ryan Woodford, Ollie Fleming and Tom Scovell. Group C contained the Falkland Islands, Gotland, Guernsey and The Isle of Man with Guernsey taking first place with three wins and the Manx side second with six points. Mention should be made of the Falkland Islands, given the distance they had travelled, and four years later the writer saw them play in the 2015 Competition in Jersey. Considerable commitment and no doubt cost. Group D was the one with just three sides – Aland, Saaremaa and the Western Isles. Aland and Saaremaa finished with four points and identical figures in respect of goals scored and conceded. The Rules decreed the toss of a coin but the two Islands requested, and were allowed, a penalty shootout from which Aland emerged triumphant. And so to Group A which was comprised of Jersey, Greenland, Menorca and Rhodes. Jersey topped the group with nine points but not without problems. In the opening game Rhodes defeated Greenland 2-1 and had two players sent off in stoppage time. They next met Jersey with the result a 2-0 victory to the Channel Islands side but thar was almost irrelevant. In what can be easily described as a stormy encounter Jersey collected three yellow cards whilst Rhodes amassed eight together with three red cards from referee Keith Stroud and they carried on their appalling behaviour after the final whistle. The outcome was that they were immediately removed from the Competition and have not been allowed to enter subsequent tournaments, On the isle of Wight that afternoon all roads for Rhodes led to ……Rhodes. In the semi-finals a John McKie goal gave the Isle of Wight victory over the holders, Jersey, at Westwood Park while Guernsey defeated Aland by the odd goal in five at Brading in a game refereed by Lee Probert who went on to reach Premiership level. The Final was played at St Georges Park and the 1,870 spectators witnessed a classic; with goals from Charlie Smeeton and Ryan Woodford giving the home Island a 2-1 lead as the clock ticked down only for Guernsey to snatch the equaliser with some three minutes remaining. Extra time however was dominated by the home side and further goals from Smeeton and Iain Seabrook gave the Isle of Wight the coveted Trophy, the second occasion they had triumphed, having won the 1995 Competition in Gibraltar. The Island Games are always extremely enjoyable, moreso when the sun shines as it did in every respect on the Isle of Wight in 2011. POST SCRIPT The Island Games which had been due to take stage in Guernsey this year will now take place in 2023. They were postponed in September 2020 due to the threat of coronavirus. The International Island Games Association (IIGA) has stated that subsequent competitions will move forward two years. Therefore the following three will be staged as follows- Orkney in 2025, Ynys Mon in 2027 and the Isle of Man in 2029. Food for thought for people perhaps wanting to watch.

NEW FUNDING OPPORTUNITY

Broken toilets, knackered footballs, stinky bibs that could knock out a horse... this isn't how our beautiful game is meant to be played. Sadly though, it's the reality we're facing. Over 5,000 grassroot clubs are expected to cease to exist due to the pandemic. This isn't okay. We are committed to supporting football communities across England, Scotland and Wales. Does your club need a helping hand? Help with new training gear, fixing up the changing rooms, the heating bill? Tell us what you need. We're sharing £100,000 to support the beautiful game. Papa John's Football Community Fund. Together we can. Please visit https://www.papajohns.co.uk/pitchit for more information, and how to apply. Saturday, 08 May 2021 Page 14 of 17
