LEAGUE NEWS

We have been supplied by the FA with a list of promotion applications received prior to the 31 December application cut-off. We have been allocated a number of clubs to ensure ground grading requirements are met for acceptance in our Division One. Those applying will have this carried out as soon as possible, with the club being advised as to what needs to be addressed to achieve an H grade by March 31st. Some may have been inspected in the recent past so may have satisfied the requirements and these may or may not be undertaken by our own Grading Officer. Please note that these are at a preliminary stage and locally there are nine teams who have applied, four from the three from the Premier League and two from the Senior League, and they are-

Bush Hill - Hampshire Premier League Dorchester Sports - Dorset Premier League Fleetlands - Hampshire Premier League Gillingham Town - Dorset Premier League Hamworthy Recreation - Dorset Premier League Infinity - Hampshire Premier League Kintbury Rangers - Wiltshire Senior League Melksham Town Reserves - Wiltshire Senior League Stockbridge - Hampshire Premier League

Melksham of course “share” with their first team who currently are in the Southern League, as do Dorchester Sports, so in theory they’ve passed the ground grading requirement. Good luck to all nine and the other 75 odd from across the country. The grading document for level H is some 10 pages long so we’ll not reproduce it here, but those clubs being inspected will be made fully aware of the requirements. More news as and when we get it, but here’s the overall summary as at time of writing, which in no way confirms allocation to leagues!

MIDWEEK MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes CHRISTCHURCH 4-1 FAWLEY THE scoreline doesn’t really reflect the game as the hosts ran in three goals in the final 20 minutes of a close encounter at Hurn Bridge. The hosts looked to have two or three players missing- no doubt with the Buildbase FA Vase clash against Sutton Common Rivers in mind. The game was spoilt by a constant drizzle that made the surface quite slick and also resulted in some areas cutting up, hopefully the surface recovered in time. Neither side was able to get a grip on the game with passes being somewhat wayward in both camps. The opening goal came on seven minutes when Christchurch won a corner and Max WILCOCK powered home a header from close range. It wasn’t long however before the Oilers drew level. A deep cross from the right by Peter Keating was met by Declan HARTIGAN who connected with an outstretched leg to divert the ball beyond Max Frampton on 21 minutes at the clubhouse end of the ground. So back to level pegging and that was the way it stayed for the first half. Christchurch could only muster a couple of long range strikes that failed to trouble keeper Jamie Bruce and Wilcock was guilty of missing what looked to be an easy chance to restore the lead with five minutes left, when firing wide when well placed. Fawley also came close through Elliot Earl but as was the case with other opportunities the final ball was often lacking. HT 1-1

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 28

The second period opened with the hosts stringing together plenty of passes and on the hour came close to going ahead again when Wilcock played in Kyle Graham whose pass saw Matt Neale fire wide from close range. With around 18 minutes of the game remaining and the threat of penalties looming, the hosts got their noses in front again. WILCOCK again on hand to convert from close range in a crowded area. Despite Fawley pushing for another equaliser, ’Church extended their lead on 84 minutes when substitute Lucas MURRAIN found himself in space on the right hand edge of the penalty area and curled his strike into the roof of the net. The game ended when Luke STONE was bundled over and a penalty was awarded. Picking himself u he fired home the fourth to round off proceedings. FT 4-1

Paul Harris writes AFC STONEHAM 8-0 COLDEN COMMON THIS was a chance to have a look at the new ground, and for AFC Stoneham a “dress rehearsal” before their game next Tuesday against Sholing. The hosts included several first-teamers, whilst the visitors made several changes from their Saturday game. The final result was due to Stoneham's superior finishing although Common had a fair amount of the play and had some chances but didn't take them. The Purples were pretty clinical in front of goal. After a couple of chances for each side, both sides coming close, the home team took the lead after 11 minutes - number 9 getting the rebound after a shot was saved by the keeper. They could have increased their lead before doing so after 19 minutes, number 9 again arrowing a 25-yarder into the corner of the net. A good move then led to a cross put away by number 8 for Stoneham's third. Common still looked useful and had another attempt on goal just wide, then the home keeper had to make a good save from a well-struck shot. But it was four after 41 minutes, a great cross from the left being touched in by the impressive number 2 at the far post. He then produced a great cross of his own, no takers. HT 4-0 After the break the home team were more in control - the Common keeper made a couple of good saves before conceding a fifth on 50 minutes, number 9 completing his hat-trick, tapping in a good cross from the right. The Purples centre-half had a good couple of long-range attempts before number six on 69 minutes, number 17 being put through, rounding the keeper before finishing coolly. Common threatened briefly before number 12, who made the previous goal, scored on 82 minutes with a nice curler into the corner, and the Common keeper made a great double save from both the previous goalscorers. But right at the end it was 8-0 as number 12 ran through and chipped the keeper nicely. FT 8-0 Credit to Common for keeping going but the home team were predictably a class above tonight. Five years ago, however, this would have been a close match, at the top of the Hampshire Premier. The ground is halfway along Stoneham Lane, just south of the motorway. On the left (if going north) is an overflow car park, not in use tonight, on the right is the entrance to the complex and room for about 100 cars. From the car park you enter at the main building through QR code readers (all media warns you to register beforehand and obtain a code, although the person at reception could presumably help you if you didn't have a code), and are then in the main building. Quite a nice café and modern changing rooms, the overall feeling is that there is quite a lot of space. From there you go through a pair of small purple turnstiles to access the main pitch. This 4G is in a cage, although quite a large one (you can walk around all four sides, with reasonably sized gangways) and on the right is a roughly 200-seater stand with purple seats. On the left are the dugouts, and the pitch is currently entirely visible from the car park through the fence. Behind the stand are two further large pitches divided up into 'community pitches'. The 4G played very well and most players seemed pretty comfortable on it. [Goalscorers confirmed as Scott Hills [3], Josh Underhill [2], Arty Kerton, Nathan Clements and Charlie Rattley. Hills to be attributed with scoring the first goal at the new facility. Thanks to the club for providing the names]

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 28

Roger Allen writes DOWNTON 3-4 BASHLEY For the first hour this Bashley side was unrecognisable from the one that gave such an anaemic display against Amesbury last weekend and the score line flatters Downton whose third goal came deep into stoppage time. Downton also contributed to their own shortcomings by leaving their two main strikers, Tom Moseley and Robbie Owen on the bench. For Bashley, Cameron Beard had an early shot saved but in the 4th minute they took the lead when a goalmouth scramble broke to Harry McGRATH and he converted from short range. There followed a series of Bashley chances notably to Beard and Harry Bunce but in the 18th minute they doubled their lead. Bunce was the provider and his cross was glanced in by McGRATH with a clever finish. At this stage Bashley were pressuring Downton into making mistakes and it was no surprise when on 28 minutes they added to their lead. Again Bunce was the provider which left McGRATH with the simplest of finishes to complete his hat trick. Close to the end of the half Harry Morgan had a good chance but his shot flashed wide. HT 0-3 Bashley started the second half as they finished the first - in complete control. Bunce shot wide in the first minute of the half and shortly after McGrath hit a post with the ball bouncing back into play. It was no surprise, when on 55 minutes, Bashley got a fourth goal. This time it was a Morgan corner that was met by Dan THOMPSON with a thumping header that Downton keeper Sebastian Tylek got a hand to but could not keep out. Bashley continued to dominate but just after the hour Marcus Savage shot narrowly wide and on 68 minutes, they pulled a goal back from the penalty spot given for pushing. The kick was taken by Dan TELFER who scored with ease. By this time Downton had made their substitutions and on 72 minutes they scored again. At the third time of asking after shots had hit the keeper and bar MOSELEY converted from close range. Almost immediately there was a mass confrontation, out of character for the rest of the game, which followed a bad tackle by Downton substitute, Declan McGregor, who had been on the pitch for less than 10 minutes. After the referee had calmed things down McGregor and Bashley's Beard were both sent from the field. At last Downton were more in the game but, although Bashley had taken their foot off the pedal, they seemed to be holding out comfortably until the 4th minute of stoppage time when the home side were awarded another penalty for a trip. This time MOSELEY took the kick and scored. There was barely time for one last attack by Downton which came to nothing. FT 3-4 It now appears that Bashley played an ineligible player because Cameron Beard had played and scored for Hamworthy United in a previous round and the decision of the Bournemouth F.A. is awaited.

MIDWEEK ROUND UP

A plethora of Cup matches and Cup Competitions scheduled but unfortunately the weather returned to form causing three postponements. The latest clash between AFC Portchester and Fareham, this time in the Russell-Cotes Cup, the eagerly awaited visit of Weymouth to Verwood in the and the Salisbury Hospitals Cup tie between Shaftesbury and Bemerton Heath all went by the board. In the Second Round of the Russell-Cotes Cup Christchurch warmed up for Saturday’s Vase tie with a 4-1 win over Fawley AFC two goals for Max Wilcock; and they will entertain Brockenhurst in the Quarter Final. In the same competition, Lymington Town continued their recent form with a 2-0 win over AFC Totton on the Southern League side’s ground to book their place in the Semi Final, with the important goals coming from Nathan Hurst and Tim Stephenson. The attendance was originally reported as a staggering 26 but the Totton Website’s count reached 95 which hopefully included an away contingent to enjoy the evening.

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 28

On paper there was something of a surprise in the Wiltshire Senior Cup with Laverstock & Ford losing 3-1 to Wroughton with the game played at the home of Hellenic League New College Swindon, who share the same complex but completely separate from Swindon Supermarine. The victors are top of the Wiltshire League with games in hand and undoubtedly, like a number of Clubs across the Country, perfectly capable of playing at Step Six if only they had the facilities. A Cup Final line up was confirmed – in early January with the game no doubt scheduled for late April – as Whitchurch beat Premier Division Tadley 2-0 at Barlows Park in the North Hants Senior Cup with the goals coming from Liam Hunt and Harry Butler. Whitchurch will now meet the holders, Andover New Street, in the Final though a new venue will be required as last year it was played at ’s Camrose Ground. The last game on the evening was a classic cup tie – goals, a second half comeback, total commitment, a couple of red cards and a nail-biting finish. This was the “replay” of the Bournemouth Senior Cup Quarter Final between Downton and Bashley after the first encounter lasted only a matter of minutes because of fog. Harry McGrath scored a hat trick to put the Premier Division side three goals up at the break and they added a fourth almost immediately upon the re-start. Game over? No. Helped by two penalties the home side battled back to 4-3 and were within inches of levelling the tie in stoppage time but it is Bashley who, eventually, are in the last four after a highly entertaining ninety minutes. No games scheduled for Wednesday and the weather meant that the Russell-Cotes tie between Sholing and Horndean and the Southampton Senior Cup meeting between Bashley and QK Southampton on Thursday also fell by the wayside and will have to be re-arranged.

The Wessex League, its original name, came in to being in Season 1986/87 and on the list of Referees for that season was Rudi Burton. A week or so ago, on the opening Saturday of 2020 the Match Officials at the Division One fixture between Fawley AFC and Bemerton Heath included Rudi Burton and his name has featured in every season between those dates. So how did it begin? Like a lot of referees I played the game before taking up the whistle and played in goal in Junior Football on probably every pitch in Southampton, always on Saturdays and often twice on Sundays. But trouble with my knees –too much bending down to pick the ball out of the net – was causing me to consider retirement. At that time I was aware of somebody in the Insurance world who refereed at a high level – The Football Combination as it was then known – and he suggested I tried refereeing. My original reaction was no – I was a pain in the backside to referees whilst I was playing – but he did not take no for an answer, I enrolled on a Course and the rest is history as they say. Can you recall the first game? Very easily, Southampton Junior League Division Six – Michelmersh & Timsbury Third Team against the Alma Inn though I cannot remember the score. I also remember the second game which was at Fleming Park because I was approached by a gentleman in a flat cap and glasses after the game who rather belligerently asked me if “I knew what running the diagonal meant because it did not look like it”. That was my introduction to Ted Walters who was the Appointments Secretary and helped so many referees over the years. He and his late wife Doreen became good friends. (Digressing, our worthy League President tells a similar tale re: being offered “words of wisdom” by Ted after a game!) So, your foot was on the first rung of the refereeing ladder -what next: The System in those days meant that you progressed from Class Three (Junior Football) to Class Two (Senior Football) to Class Three () and I spent two years in both Class Three and Two before joining the Hampshire League and then the Wessex League. So the inaugural Season in the Wessex League since when, and we are jumping forwards, you have probably officiated at every Ground in the League over the Years starting where ? One of my first games was Bashley versus AFC Lymington and the two clubs were not “the best of friends” at the time but it had its lighter moment. I had to caution one player, someone I had known for years both inside and outside football, and he could not accept that he had to tell me his name on the basis that “I Sunday, 12 January 2020 Page 13 of 22

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 28

had known his name for years”. I patiently explained, probably three times, how the system worked and he eventually complied, though I am not sure he ever saw the sense! I cannot quite claim a one hundred per cent record regarding grounds visited as I never went to Steyning in that initial season though I was in the middle when they played at Portals. At the end of that first season the system changed and I was an Assistant – though it was probably still Linesman at that time – for a year before returning to the middle for a season after which I was “removed” on Age grounds, But the system changed again and I went back in the middle and spent nine years as a Level Four Referee under the present system. You must have come across some good players in your time. Too many to recall but three off the top of my head – Wayne Shaw, Jimmy Sheppard and Graham Kemp. Graham was a nice bloke but not the easiest to manage on the field and he certainly did not improve when he moved in to the dugout! Similarly trips to Hamble in the Danny Bowers and Dave Lewis days were a challenge in the nicest sense and l learned with Danny that if you got “your answer in first” you usually “won”. Football has changed over the years you have been involved. For the better ? In some respects, yes, in others no. The standard and facilities have improved remarkably but the spirit of the game has largely gone the other way. If you watch boys football nowadays, they question and challenge everything partly due to the change in social behaviour but it has also to be said that the behaviour of players at the highest level does not help. When you see a player head the ball, unchallenged, directly in to touch and then claim the throw, you do wonder! Dare we mention VAR It will be a great asset if used properly but at present that is not the case Do you have time for other sports ? I hack my way round the Golf Course. I like American Football and played cricket in my youth representing the Hampshire Association of Boys Clubs on a number of occasions, which was a decent level. Back perhaps to Square One and the question all referees probably get asked – Have you ever thought “why do I do this”? Oh Yes. You get home on a Saturday evening, throw your bag in a corner and say “that’s it”. By Wednesday you are beginning to think as to ”where am I this Saturday” and by Friday the bag is retrieved and packed again. Our grateful thanks to Rudi for his time and assistance with the above and it is doubtful if anyone else can match his length of service as regards to the League and it is perhaps fitting to end with mention of one more match. When both Brockenhurst and Bournemouth reached 25 years of unbroken membership of the Premier Division the League match between them at Grigg Lane on Friday 25 March 2011 was dubbed “The Twenty Five Year Game” and Rudi is very proud that he was appointed to the middle for that game. But quite simply – who else?

CLUB NEWS

We hear that Carl Bennett has stepped down as Manager at Folland Sports, also stepping down is his Assistant Nick Barrow, we wish them well for their future. The club didn’t wasted time in making new appointments though- and have announced their new first team management of Dave Herbert, Connor Doswell, Nathan Morgan and Ashley Jarvis. Both Dave Herbert and Ashley Jarvis are Follands old boys with a wealth of experience at many clubs at Wessex League level, while Connor and Nathan join from Winchester Castle. Martin Coe also returns as goalkeeping coach to complete the setup. Meanwhile Whitchurch United have appointed Jason Holmes as Director of Football. Currently a Sports Development Manager with a UEFA B licence was until recently Assistant Manager at Andover Town. There’s been some movement at Grigg Lane, with Matt Casey going to Ringwood Town and Matt Taylor to Totton & Eling, both were in line to start yesterday.

Luke Pothecary has stepped aside as Assistant Manager at Alresford Town due to work commitments but he’ll still remain involved in a coaching capacity with the Magpies. Craig McAllister will assume the Assistant Manager role at Arlebury Park going forwards. Ollie Dennett has been signed on dual registration we presume from & Waterlooville and Andover Town have signed Luke Greenway from Downton.

WEEKEND MATCH REPORTS

Mike Robins writes VERWOOD TOWN 1-2 RINGWOOD TOWN BRAGGING rights head to Hampshire after Ringwood won by the odd goal in three at a cold windy and overcast Potterne Park, but it took a long time for the goals to arrive. It was a fairly even contest with both sides passing the ball but neither were able to produce that telling final delivery for long spells in the first half- and neither keeper was really tested. The first notable chance came to the visitors when a Jack Hannam strike could’ve produced something had he not miskicked and Ryan Hamm got into a good position but saw his low effort go fractionally wide just prior to the 40th minute. The visitors had marginally the better of the half and the Potters were perhaps fortunate not to go in at the break behind. HT 0-0 Hamm and Ben HARRIS were seeing a lot of the ball but found progress stifled on numerous occasions, but it was the latter who made the breakthrough just shy of the hour. His free kick from around 22 yards was fumbled by Shane Cooper and it dropped over the line despite the keeper’s efforts to scoop the ball to safety. Ringwood had a chance to extend their lead four minutes later but failed. However the lead was doubled on 68 when HAMM broke away and showed the guile that makes him one of the leading scorers in the Division by squeezing the ball home between keeper and post at the Clubhouse End of the ground. It looked all up for the Potters especially when Lee Vint could only drag a chance wide of the mark. However a thundering 25 yard strike from midfielder Ethan MADDOCKS flew into the roof of the net to potentially set up a cracking finish. However the visitors showed the resolve to keep their noses in front despite a late chance from Vint that went wide. FT 1-2 Sunday, 12 January 2020 Page 16 of 22

SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 28

John Gorman writes ANDOVER TOWN 1-0 PETERSFIELD TOWN WITH the two Clubs separated by just one point in the table this always looked likely to be a close encounter and so it proved with the sides largely cancelling each other out and rather a lack of goalmouth incident, though there was plenty of effort and at times no little skill. There was no taste at the outset of what was to follow as Andover pushed forward and immediately won a corner on the right, the ball landed somewhere near the penalty spot and Owen TRAPNELL found the space and time to turn and fire through a crowded area to put the home side ahead. Sixty seconds gone and a more than promising start. Two more corners followed in quick succession with Andover clearing one with some difficulty and visiting keeper Matt Petts confidently dealing with the second. An unnecessary challenge gave Petersfield a free kick on the edge of the “D” with Dave Tasker pushing Cameron Smith’s shot away at full stretch, and the goalkeeper twice had to leave his area to deal with through balls that split the defence. Andover came close to a second when Josh Bertie was allowed to run too far unchallenged only to see his shot clip the top of the crossbar and Ben Emans had a shot blocked after a long run. Petersfield were frequently testing the home defence with intelligent through balls with Tasker acting as a sweeper some ten to fifteen yards outside his area on more than one occasion. Andover then had a free kick on the edge of the “D”, though the contact in the challenge looked minimal, but the wall did its job at the expense of a corner kick which passed through the six yard box without anyone of either persuasion getting a touch. Ruben Smith failed to make contact with an Emans cross at the far post and a dangerous ball from Brendon Holmes found no takers as the home side enjoyed a spell of possession Andover’s Howard Nhemachena was lucky to escape a caution when he petulantly prevented a free kick from being taken before the home side nearly came to grief following another of Tasker’s sorties from his area. He got nowhere near the ball out on the right touchline and the resulting cross was headed, under pressure, narrowly over the bar. Another free kick for Andover – again negligible contact – was too high and the half finished with lengthy treatment for Petersfield’s Matt Low after being struck at close range by a Tasker clearance. HT 1-0 Having scored at the start of the first half Andover nearly staged a repeat in the second half with Bertie denied by the goalkeeper’s legs after Emans had sent him clear. At the other end neat play by Marvin Orepo and Will Webb created a shooting chance for the latter which required a fine save from Tasker and they had perhaps justifiable shouts for a penalty turned down when Orepo appeared to be pushed over. Trapnell collected the first caution of the afternoon for halting the ever dangerous Webb illegally as the visitors began to dominate possession. A Harry Tremlett cross was headed over his own bar by a defender and substitute Will Essai was only inches wide. Andover introduced new signing Luke Greenaway to the fray and his first act was to collect a caution after a spat with John Geddes, who also went in the book. Greenaway then rather pushed his luck with a challenge that bordered on the edge of wild and Tasker was forced to go down at Tremlett’s feet after another through ball created the chance. Andover contrived a four on three situation but Bertie chose to shoot – wide – from some thirty yards and with time running out Nhemachena, who had enjoyed a number of conversations with the referee over the course of the afternoon, finally collected a yellow card. Both sides used their full quota of substitutes but there was no further threat at either end and an enjoyable well refereed game, despite their being only one goal, ended as some rain arrived on the scene. In a sentence the game could have gone either way but Andover scored the goal – and that is what matters. FT 1-0

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

Space restrictions means just a look at the top four on the leagues below. So we’ll start in Dorset, where Hamworthy Recreation maintain a 100% record with a 3-0 win at Portland. Both Gillingham Town and Merley Cobham Sports collected the points on the road both recording 3-1 wins. Bush Hill were in Hampshire Senior Trophy action going down to Whitecroft & Barton Sports on the 4-2. Infinity didn’t have a league game so Paulsgrove closed up with a big 5-1 win at Sway, whilst Fleetlands beat fellow promotion hopefuls Stockbridge with a 3-0 win on the road. None of the top four in Wiltshire were in league action, although at the foot Pewsey Vale moved off the bottom rung with a 2-1 win over Malmesbury Victoria’s Development team. Laverstock & Ford’s midweek victors Wroughton stay top on goal difference. The Swindon based side tasted a penalty shoot-out defeat in the League Cup at Purton yesterday. In the Wyvern Premier Wimborne won by the odd goal in seven at Totton & Eling, whilst Poole Town saw off Baffins 3-0 with the game being played at Hamworthy United. In the Southern League Premier Division, Poole Town had a single goal away win over second placed Tiverton Town, whilst former members Wimborne Town and Blackfield & Langley met at Cuthbury. The Magpies won 2-0 with former Blackfield skipper Sam Poole getting one of the goals in front of a crowd of 317. In the Southern Division Sholing had a 2-0 half time lead before going down to four second half goals from visitors Mangotsfield United. Winchester City scored two without reply at home against Bristol Manor Farm. Finally in the Buildbase FA Trophy 2nd Round Eastleigh won by the odd goal in three at home against Matlock Town where a crowd of 718 was recorded, congratulations in overcoming a potential banana skin.

early a full programme completed but sadly the end of Christchurch, and the League’s, participation in this seasons FA Vase. The Hurn Bridge side went out by the odd goal in three to Combined Counties N League side Sutton Common Rovers and were two down before a late Max Wilcock goal gave them hope but it was not to be in front of a crowd close to 200. We wish the Surrey side all good luck in Monday’s draw. It is customary to start the review of the matches in both Divisions with matters at the top of the respective tables but with respect to those seeking the end of season honours we will start at the bottom with two sides who have certainly not enjoyed the best of fortunes so far this season. Amesbury have suffered in a way never experienced before by their Chairman, despite his long association with the League and the game in general; but pulled off a surprise and deserved three goal victory at Bashley last week. They then followed that seven days later with three more goals and a victory over Fareham Town who mustered just one in reply. Billy Connors (two) and Ewan Haylor scored the vital goals and Amesbury and the match referee are to be commended over their actions after an unfortunate colour clash. In Division One Follands benefitted from what the National Press like to call the new Management “Bounce” with their first League win since the second game of the season. SYDENHAMS FOOTBALL LEAGUE NEWS 2019/20 EDITION NUMBER 28

Hamble stalwarts Dave Herbert and Ashley Jarvis, took over the reins in midweek and the outcome was a creditable 2-1 win at Whitchurch – goals from Kev Brewster and Josh Ball - that puts them in touching distance of the two sides immediately above them in the table. Back to the Premier Division and the weekend started on Friday night for leaders Alresford with a 4-1 win at Tadley in front of an attendance that topped two hundred. New signing Ollie Dennett marked his debut with a hat trick which is not a bad way to start. On Saturday the games at Baffins Milton Rovers and Solent University against Fleet Town and Portland respectively lost out to waterlogged pitches and Baffins must be getting concerned at the number of games they still have left to play. In the top game of the day AFC Stoneham won for the fifth consecutive time on the road with goals from Scott Hills and Matt Bainbridge giving them a 2-1 victory over promotion chasing rivals AFC Portchester. Hamble Club remain in fourth place after two late Nathan Lynch goas gave them victory over Bournemouth and Horndean maintained their recent form by beating Cowes Sports 3-2. Bobby Scott scored twice for the winners while Cowes suffered their fifth consecutive loss. Bashley bounced back with a vengeance from last week’s home defeat by beating Shaftesbury 7-2 with hat tricks for Harry McGrath and Cameron Beard as the Dorset Club’s poor away record continued in front of a three figure attendance, and in the final game a late Brockenhurst goal ensured they shared the points with Hamworthy United. All this leaves Alresford still three points clear of AFC Stoneham and AFC Portchester with Hamble Club a further four points back. In Division One the top five in the table at the start of the day recorded three wins, a defeat and a postponement between them. The latter was at Hythe & Dibden where their game with Totton & Eling gave way to a waterlogged pitch, but no such troubles for the leaders US Portsmouth. Beaten at home last week they returned to form with a 4-1 win over third place Alton – four different scorers – to maintain their place at the top of the table. It was a good day for goals in the Division with thirty eight spread across the eight matches and seven of those were at Romsey where, in a highly entertaining game, the home side went down 4-3 to Downton. Tom Moseley scored twice for the winners in a game that had a late finish – more anon. Andover New Street racked up their ninth win in their last nine matches, and have emerged as very much a force in the promotion race, with a 5-0 win at Fawley, Rafa Ramos adding a hat trick to the five he scored last week. Bemerton also scored five and made it five straight wins at home as East Cowes Vics scored one in reply. Justin Bennett added two more goals to his season’s tally and if the Club could produce anything like the same consistency on their travels their place in the promotion race would be considerably enhanced. Newport were the highest scorers on the day beating New Milton 7-2 at Whippingham. Four different players scored in the first half and Connor Kelly put the icing on the cake so to speak with a second half hat trick. A single goal from Owen Trapnell gave Andover Town the points against Petersfield in a game between two well matched sides and the local derby at Verwood went the way of visitors Ringwood with a best of three goals victory as the Potters’ inability to win at home continued. At the end of the day US Portsmouth still top the table with four points covering the top five sides. Finally back to events at Romsey where the floodlights were switched on as the first half drew to a close and worked only fitfully until going out all together during the break. With the encouragement of referee John Foster and his colleagues and the willing agreement of Downton the Romsey Officials finally got the lights going and the game continued after a rather extended half time break. The League’s thanks to all for getting the game completed.
