Holly brings prior NWSL coaching experience to his role, and the native Irishman more recently had a hand in helping the United States win the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup as an opposition analyst for U.S. Soccer. Holly traveled extensively in advance of the World Cup, scouting potential rivals for the United States. His diligence — in the form of lengthy reports delivered to the coaching staff — paid off when the USWNT successfully defended its title.Prior to working with U.S. Soccer, Holly rose from assistant to head coach for Sky Blue FC, the NWSL franchise in Harrison, N.J. Holly guided a young Sky Blue FC roster to a 7-8-5 mark in 2016, narrowly missing the playoffs with a roster that featured Rookie of the Year Raquel Rodriguez in the midfield. Holly left Sky Blue FC mid-2017 before resurfacing with U.S. Soccer, for which he has also served as an assistant for the women’s U-23 and U-17 teams.Holly coordinated with Executive Vice President of Development, James O’Connor, on building Racing Louisville FC’s inaugural roster. Key events included the 2020 NWSL Expansion Draft in November and the 2021 NWSL College Draft that took place in January.

  • Marketing of Professional Women's Soccer in the United States
MARKETING OF PROFESSIONAL WOMEN’S SOCCER IN THE UNITED STATES THROUGH FEMINIST THEORIES by CHRISTOPHER HENDERSON (Under the Direction of James J. Zhang) ABSTRACT Despite the success of the United States Women’s National Team (USWNT), two women’s soccer leagues have quickly failed in the U.S. This doctoral dissertation examines the past and present of the marketing of professional women’s soccer in the United States emphasizing feminist themes to fulfill three objectives: (a) to critically examine the history of the marketing of women’s soccer in the United States to identify and gain a better comprehension of changes in theory and practice of marketing in women’s soccer in the U.S. over time; (b) to identify and explain the use of three feminist themes in the marketing of women’s soccer, specifically in the NWSL; and (c) to analyze the impact of these three feminist themes on the related marketing strategies used within in the NWSL in an effort to build a framework while also developing recommendations for marketing practitioners for the promotion and marketing of professional women’s soccer in the United States. The historical analysis segment revealed that the failure of the first two professional women’s soccer leagues in the United States were largely a result of poor resource allocation and an inability to connect with and retain fans, the media, and sponsors. The Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA) burned through capital at an unsustainable rate and was unable to maintain the excitement of the 1999 Women’s World Cup, leading to microscopic television ratings and perennially falling attendance.

  • Mid-Season Interruption: Did the FIFA Women's World Cup and the ESPN
1 Mid-Season Interruption: Did the FIFA Women’s World Cup and the ESPN broadcasting agreement effect NWSL attendance? Kenadie Stanger After the disbandment of the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) in 2012, the National Women’s Soccer League was created in that same year with much optimism. Although the NWSL has had many successes over the years compared to other professional women’s soccer leagues, the NWSL has had a lot of difficulty with broadcasting agreements and maintaining attention from fans. This essay seeks to analyze the effect broadcasting agreements and the FIFA WWC had on NWSL attendance. I find that there are statistically significant changes in attendance from the events of the FIFA’s Women’s World Cup and the broadcasting agreement between the NWSL and ESPN in the year 2019. 2 1. Introduction At just seven years old, the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is the longest running professional women’s soccer league in the world. As a third try from the United States Soccer Federation for a successful women’s soccer league, the NWSL is comprised of nine Division-1 teams with players from all around the globe (Rollins, 2017). The NWSL was the first American women’s soccer league to survive past the fourth season (Rollins, 2017). Yet compared to men’s leagues the NWSL is still in its infancy. Despite its early stages, the league has sustained a steady attendance rate each season, but it’s not growing fast enough to stay profitable. The NWSL has had to drop multiple teams to continue to make the league cost effective.
