Early descriptions of species from Norwegian waters are reviewed, with a focus on the basic requirements for re- assessing their characteristics, in particular, by clarifying the status of the original material and locating sampling sites. A large number of polychaete species from the North Atlantic were described in the early period of zoological studies in the 18th and 19th centuries. -

ISSN 0029- l%X. A new geological map, covering about 1500 km' of the area around Farsund, south Norway, is presented. The country rock gneisses have been subdivided into three major lithostructural units consisting of augen, banded, and granitic gneisses. The intrusive 'farsundite complex' is divided into several distinct bodies and their contact relations are described. The plutons fall mineralogically, texturally, and chemically into two groups: l. The Farsund charnockite and the strongly differentiated Kleivan granite which show anorthositic affinites. 2. The mineralogically more normal granites such as the Lyngdal hornblende granite. 92 THE ORDOVICIAN OF THE OSLO REGION A SHORT HISTORY OF RES EARCH Gunnar Henningsmoen INTRODUCT ION The Oslo Region (Oslofeltet) is not an administrative unit but a term introduced by geologists. At first referred to as 'Christianias Overgangs-Territorium' (the 'overgang' or transition relating to geological age) or 'Christiania-territoriet' (Keilhau 1826), it later became known as 'Kristianiafeltet' and finally 'Oslofeltet' when the old name of Oslo was reintroduced for the capital in 1925. The Oslo Region varies in width from 40 to 75 km and extends a distance of approximately 115 km both north and south of Oslo, which is situated at its eastern border. The region is fault controlled (Oslo Graben) and covers an area of roughly lO 000 square km. It is bordered by Precambrian in the west and east and by the Caledonian nappe region in the north. Within the region, Upper Palaeozoic, mostly igneous, rocks are slightly greater in areal extent than the Lower Palaeozoic sedimentary rocks. Ordovician rocks cover around 2 000 square km and crop out in eleven districts established by Størmer (1953). THE ORDOVICIAN SYSTEM IN THE OSLO REGION In the early 1800's, strata now assigned to the Ordovician were not distinguished as a separate unit, but were included in the 'Uebergangs gebirge' (transitional rocks), a concept introduced in Germany in the late 1790's by Abraham G. Werner for rocks between the 'Urgebirge' (ancient rocks) and the 'Flotzgebirge' (Coal Measures and younger). Thus the German geologist von Buch (1810), after having travelled in Scandinavia, assigned all the rocks of the Oslo Region to the 'Uebergangs formation'. -

Dette betyr at vi skal utføre forskningsoppdrag som kan gi myndig- heter, næring og samfunn et bredt og pålitelig grunnlag for forvaltning av våre marine økosystemer. Målet for forvaltningen er å verne det marine miljøet og sikre et langsiktig, godt utbytte fra fiskebestandene, andre levende ressurser og fra havbruket. Økosystemene og miljøforholdene krever at en slik forvaltning baseres på et utstrakt internasjonalt samarbeid, både på forsker- og myndighetsnivå. En viktig del av forskningen er rettet mot bestander som danner grunnlaget for norske fiskerier. Ved å overvåke endringer og stadig forbedre kunnskapen, blir beregninger av bestandenes produksjon mer pålitelig og forvaltningen derfor bedre. Miljøforskningen har også en bred plass, både for å overvåke klimatiske endringer og kjemisk forurensning, og for å undersøke hvordan dette kan påvirke livs- vilkårene for levende marine ressurser. I utviklingen av norsk havbruk bidrar Havforskningsinstituttet med ny, grunn- leggende biologisk kunnskap om laksefisk, marine arter og skalldyr. Her inngår bl.a. genetikk, fysiologi, fiskevelferd og fiskehelse. Andre forskningsoppgaver omfatter økosystemet i kystsonen, bunndyrsamfunn på kontinentalsokkelen og fangstteknologi. Forskningen ved Havforskningsinstituttet blir initiert og finansiert gjennom fem forsknings- og rådgivingsprogram og fem rene forskningsprogram. Forskningen utføres i 19 faggrupper. -

Internationalist and Norwegian at the same time: Johan Hjort and ICES. - ICES Marine Science Symposia, 215: 39-44. The marine biologist Johan Hjort (1869-1948) remained at the forefront of Norwegian marine research for more than half a century. He also belonged to a small group of Scandinavians who, around 1900, committed themselves to founding ICES. For a small nation, international collaboration was considered crucial for maintaining the quality of research. The marine sciences were also a source of national pride, an area in which Norway could and did shine internationally. For almost fifty years, Hjort was one of the Council’s leading characters both as a scientist and as an organizer. In the formative years of ICES, Hjort established a programme for fishery studies integrating national and international investigations. While the British and German scientists were preoccupied with the problem of overfishing, Hjort was the foremost spokesman for focusing on nat ural variations in the catches. In 1914, he and his colleagues at the Directorate of Fisheries concluded their research by publishing "Fluctuations in the great fisheries of northern Europe". This report laid out theoretical foundations of the emerging field and improved the Council’s scientific reputation. His experiences within the ICES communi ty also influenced Hjort's political ideas and work. Like his compatriot, the biologist and oceanographer Fridtjof Nansen, Hjort held that building scientific and cultural bonds and establishing agreements in these areas between nations were essential for avoiding the hubris amongst nations and lessening the chance of war in Europe. -

Norges geologiske undersøkelse Bulletin 436, 27-38 Titanium deposits in Norway are of three major types: igneous, metasomatic and metamorphic. The igneous deposits are composed of ilmenite, magnetite and apatite in various proportions and occur in geological provinces of different ages, and some have a metamorphic overprint. The other major Ti ore-type is the rutile-bearing eclogites in western Norway that formed during the Caledonian high-pressure metamorphism of predominantly Proterozoic basic igneous rocks. The third Ti ore-type is the Proterozoic rutile-bearing, scapolitised and albitised rocks in the Bamble region of South Norway. Norwegian Ti mineral resources are large. The Egersund province in southernmost Norway is by far the most significant. This province includes the Tellnes ilmenite deposit which is in operation, as well as large volumes of other low-grade ilmenite ores. The annual ilmenite production at Tellnes, ~550,000 t. ilmenite, is 6-7 % of the total mine production of Ti minerals in the world, and Tellnes alone has approximately 12 % of the world’s resources of ilmenite. Mineralogy is the overall factor influencing the economic significance of Ti deposits, defining the quality of the Ti mineral product that can be produced. Grainsize, mineral intergrowths and mineral chemistry are a reflection of the geological environment and later conditions of the ore-forming process.
