SOGNEFJORD IN A NUTSHELL 5 nights from €1295 per person sharing (plus taxes) Valid from 01 May - 30 September 2020 Start with 2 nights in Oslo and take in some great museums and galleries including the Vigeland Sculpture Park. During summer the days are long with over 18 hours of daylight available for numerous pursuits. Norway was home to some adventurous explorers including Thor Heyerdahl of Kon-Tiki fame and you can still see the original papyrus raft on display in the Kon-Tiki Museum. One of the most beautiful railway journeys in the world is that between Oslo and Bergen. Cross through lush countryside and past majestic glaciers before disembarking in the heart of the mountains at the tiny station of Myrdal. A second train, the Flåmsbanen, winds down almost sheer mountainside taking you to Flåm. The hour-long trip includes a stop at the thunderous Kjosfossen waterfall. Flåm marks the head of the longest fjord in the world, Sognefjorden. A high-speed ferry takes you along the full length of this stunning waterway, stopping at isolated picture-book villages along the way. At the village of Balestrand you disembark in time for dinner and overnight at the Kviknes Hotel, overlooking the fjord. The Kviknes is a member of De Historiske hotels of Norway. You have most of the next day free to explore Balestrand or you could take the Fjaerland Glacier tour (book locally the day before). It starts with the early 1.5-hour ferry ride taking you along the fjord to Fjaerland. A coach brings you to the fascinating Norwegian Glacier Museum and Visitor Centre.

MOSKENES Area: 118.6 km2 Population: approx.1128 Municipal centre: Reine he island of Mosk enesøy is located in the untamed, western part of the Lofoten Is- Page lands. On the far side of the island, you will find long, chalk-white beaches. The island Tis surrounded by strong tidal currents like the Sundstraumen strait, and the infamous 28 Maelstrom. Glaciers and other forces of Nature have sculpted the island landscape, which is among the wildest and most fascinating that Norway can offer. Traces of Stone Age settlement dating back over 5,500 years can be found on the island. Several old place names, such as Moskenes, bear witness to early Sami settlement. The inhabitants of Moskenesøy live largely on the eastern side of the island, where the best harbour conditions are to be found. Earlier, there was also settlement along the entire northern coast of the island – the so-called outer coast, but owing to poor harbour conditions and perilous waters, all of them have now been abandoned. Å, Hamnøy and Sakrisøy are particularly well-known for their old, well-preserved architectural environment. The Lofoten Fishery, the Fishing Village and the Rorbu Cabin Abundant Resources in the North When the great glaciers receded from our northern coastlines, the cod began its annual migra- tion from the Barents Sea to spawn in the waters of Lofoten. Every winter for over 10,000 years, the coastal people have caught the tasty Norwegian Arctic cod, eating the fresh fish together with the liver and roes, or producing stockfish and cod liver oil - used for bartering and trading purposes.

  • Discovery of Highly Radioactive Granite in the Bergen Region
NORWEGIAN JOURNAL OF GEOLOGY Vol 96 Nr. 4 (2016) http://dx.doi.org/10.17850/njg96-4-03 Discovery of highly radioactive granite in the Bergen Region Christophe Pascal1,2 & Therese Rudlang3 1NGU, Geological Survey of Norway, Post Box 6315 Sluppen, 7491 Trondheim, Norway. 2Institute of Geology, Mineralogy and Geophysics, Ruhr University Bochum, Germany. 3NTNU, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, 7491 Trondheim, Norway. E-mail corresponding author (Christophe Pascal): [email protected] We report the discovery of the most radioactive granite ever found in Norway, namely the Løvstakken granite, located ~5 km southwest of Bergen. A preliminary gamma-spectrometry survey carried out in the Bergen Region, in autumn 2009, showed that the Løvstakken granite contained unusually high amounts of uranium and thorium. This finding was later confirmed by a more complete regional survey during the summer of 2010. We visited 281 sites and made 502 radiometric measurements in the Bergen Region and adjacent areas. Based on 87 measurements on the Løvstakken granite, we found that it contains ~18 ppm U, ~58 ppm Th and ~6% K on average (median values). Natural radioactivity is not harmful by itself, but the high uranium levels of the Løvstakken granite (i.e., up to ~69 ppm) cause concern in terms of radon hazard. In addition, geothermal gradients in the continental crust are strongly dependent on the amount of radioactive (i.e., heat-producing) elements it hosts. Our study indicates that the Løvstakken granite produces ~8 mW/m3 of heat. Such high heat-generation values may result in anomalously high temperatures in the subsurface of the Bergen Region, that in turn may render the use of geothermal energy economically interesting.
